some ways to save money - depending on how much power u wanna make - instead of going for an HKS turbo etc, try a hi flow turbo like the ones from slide - good to about 260rwkws and 19psi, for around $940 or something. That leaves cash to pay for other stuff like FMIC, EBC, aftermarket ecu and tune - but also gives u a chance to work on the handling of the car. Works well if u wanna take it to the track.....u would need a car that stops as well as it goes for the track.
edit: im a noob at this, mainly cos it takes me ages to save up and mod the car to my liking - but thats just what Im thinking of doing. Rather than spend heaps for a turbo, i plan to get a hiflow - not too much power for the streets but just right to take it to the track for occasional flogging....
As the other (more experienced) guys/gals have said - the mods they have put will help u achieve a good power/torque figure/curve
