In my NA R33 with the only mod being a 3" catback exhaust, i was getting 430-460km per tank (bout 60-63L)... translates to around 13.9L/100km Oh, and I drive with a very heavy right foot

Alright, a little update... not much of a development... but anyway Got a call from my insurance company today, they are gonna tow it back from Seymour today to a panel shop near me to get it assessed. Has anyone had any experience or heard anything about Baywood Panels in Bayswater (good or bad feedback appreciated)? I have the option of taking it somewhere else, but need to let them know by the end of today, otherwise that is where they are going to take it. I might try and go in there tomorrow and see if i can snoop around and take a few pics of the damage

I too missed out on the GB and have wondered the same thing... awesome to hear that it can be done!

I've been pulled over a few times, usually get breath-tested and they look at the car... check for a turbo (I'm on P Plates...), check tires, etc, and drive off... the last time i got pulled over the guy acted all nice and friendly but then filed an EPA report for my loud exhaust I think they'd have to be a pretty nasty bloke to check for power-weight or defects when they can see a dead kangaroo lying down the road and your car all smashed up. lol I'd just say I couldn't open the bonnet I'm not really sure of the difference in country vs city cops, but these guys seemed a lot more laid back and friendly than some of the city guys i've met. Probably just depends on who you get. I'm sure there's some tight country cops out there too!

Yeah my car is insured... but i mean it was the roo's fault... his insurance should pay! The cop told me that the drought brings the roos out onto the road... when it does rain it drains off the road and so the grass at the edges of the road is the greenest. The roos come out to graze and get startled by the cars... poor things.

Hey Guys, Well i was coming home from visiting a friend last night in Tocumwal (NSW, just over the border for those not aware) and was told to come via Seymour and Yea because "it would be a more interesting drive". Anyway, came through Seymour, cruising down the Goulburn Valley Highway at 100 clicks when i come round a bend and see a medium sized kangaroo sitting in the middle of my lane! I hit the brakes and swerved onto the other side of the road (it was about 1:30am by this time, no cars coming the other way luckily... actually hadn't seen another car for about 30 minutes ), but i think skippy got startled and followed the headlights because he jumped the same way. Anyway i'd say i hit him at about 80 km's, with him mid-bounce, as he went flying to the side and i pulled up to a stop. I got out of the car and took a quick look at the damage... there was an almost-dead skippy laying in the middle of the road, blood poring out and hiddeous gurgling sounds coming from his nose, and there was my car... the impact was on the left-hand side of the car, i had no headlight (totally smashed to tiny pieces... didnt even resemble any form of headlight), my bonnet was crushed into what appeared to be a kind of zig-zag modern art-form, and there was water pouring out from under engine. I quickly got back into the car, turned around and pulled off the road onto the shoulder. I turned the car off and got my mate who was travelling with me to help me wrench open the bonnet. I noticed that my grill was gone... found that laying down the road smashed in 2 pieces, and my radiator was quite badly damaged (water and steam pouring out everywhere). The fan had been pushed into the radiator and was broken. My airbox and intake snorkel thing were broken, and my bumper was a bit stoved in at the top. Clearly I was not going to be driving home. I rang the RACV, who after 10 minutes on hold informed me that because I'm not insured with them and only have roadside assistance, there was nothing they could do. They gave me the number of Seymour Towing and that was it. As i was finishing up i heard the noise of an engine in the background, so i flicked my headlights back on and turned on the hazards. I was still writing down the number for the towing company when i say headlights pulling up behind me. I then noticed that they were blue and red... I got out and spoke to the Cop, explained what had happened, and that i had just been on the phone to the RACV and was about to organize a tow. The Cop asked about the kangaroo, and after taking a look at it put it out of it's misery and pain. They proceeded to do an incident report, asked me what i was doing there, what speed i was doing, whether i was wearing my seatbelt or not, whether i had been drinking or not, what happened, etc (asked similar questions of my passenger too). They then breathalysed me (hadn't had a drop) and took down my license details. The other cop was nice enough to organize the tow truck for me and everything! I got the guy's details and thanked them for all of their help. They drove off and we waited for the tow truck to come. about 30 minutes later a guy from Seymour Towing arrived, and we loaded my car onto his tray-truck and off we went. Took the car back to Seymour and then got my parents to pick me up from there (just over an hour from my place at that time of night... about 2:30am ). I just want to say what an awesome experience I had with the police... they were very friendly and helpful. I was actually a little surprised at one thing... I was out in the middle of nowhere, sitting off the side of the road with my hazards on and a crumpled bonnet, yet four cars passed us while waiting for the tow truck and not one stopped to see if we where okay. Shame on you people! I tried to call Just Car Insurance today but got a message telling me they were closed over Christmas, and to call back later. I'll most likely have to wait until the new year for the assessor to have a look at it and then need it to be towed back to Melbourne to be repaired. Over all I'm just happy that neither of us was injured (much more than i can say for my car or the kangaroo) and that I hit the roo where I did... a little higher and it could have gone through the windscreen, a little lower and it would have gone under the car. I'm a little annoyed it was so dark and i couldn't get any pics to post up, but I'm sure I'll be able to see it before it is repaired.

Rolling A Car Onto Its Side, Minimun Speed Needed?
Samon replied to NateR31's topic in General Automotive Discussion
I remember the guy at the Murcott's Defensive Driving day I did a couple of years ago saying that "A vehicle won't roll over... it needs to be tripped over". So u need to actually limit the movement of the base (i.e. wheels) to get the apex (i.e. top of car ) to tip over. This either means: 1. Hitting a gutter, pretty much instant stopping of the base with the apex still traveling at a decent speed or 2. Traveling fast enough and sideways enough (i.e. tight cornering) with the tires STILL GRIPPING for it to have a similar effect to #1 above. I think that it would have to be pretty damn tight cornering to get a vehicle (even if it is a CRV) to roll at 40 km/h... so unless it was pretty much a hairpin turn best bet is she was speeding. -
I had pretty much the same thing happen about 2 weeks ago, Cop pulled me over for a "Random Breath Test", checked my license, asked me to pop the bonnet and took a look under there, asked me if the exhaust was on it when i got it, etc... anyway then he left with a "thanks mate".. all good (or so i thought). He actually forgot to breath test me in the end Yesterday I got a letter from the EPA saying i was observed on that day and "the vehicle was considered to be either excessively noisy or had a faulty exhaust system". Anyway I have to get it tested, gotta get a new exhaust system coz there's no chance that it will pass whatsoever, it's soooo loud (but i love it ). Just what I need at Christmas time

I don't have any pics, but i have a two amps mounted in that space. I have my 12" Sub in a separate box in the boot... lol i stapled Velcro onto the bottom of the box and it just sticks to the carpet in the boot (which is glues + stapled to the board thing that covers the space-saver) and stops it sliding around.

Cunching Syncros At High Rpm
Samon replied to NYTSKY's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
I had a similar problem in my 33. Was crunching slightly going into second and third... i put in Redline Shockproof (yeah the blue stuff... red bottle if i remember correctly) and after a few days the crunching completely went away. It is heaps better to get into any gear and certainly justifies the cost (i think it was like $125 for the bottle or something ) Just my 2c -
lol indeed Very happy with the result!

I know that I am kinda resurrecting an old thread, but anyway... I bought Thommo's set of seat covers (he sold his car after he had ordered the covers) on Saturday and put them in yesterday and today. I must say they look awesome! I used a Crochet Hook that i ground a sharp point onto the normally blunt end to poke through the seats for the white strings, and pulled all of the seats out to do them. I got a piece of copper plumbing pipe and ground a sharp edge onto one end and used it as a wad-punch to make the holes for the headrest-legs and for the lumbar-support knob. Here are a few pics of the final job... sorry about the quality, i really need to get myself a digital camera, the one on my phone really sucks! [attachmen =72438:attachment]

I've got a few quotes to replace the pipe and resonator/muffler between my cat and my rear mufflers with a 2.5"... varies between $180 and $300 depending on where I go and whether i get it Mandrel bent or just standard Press bent. Pretty much every exhaust place have made comments that "it would be a bit gutless down low, wouldn't it?", so I'm pretty sure that this will help. They have pretty much all mentioned that I wouldn't have enough backpressure... some have said that if I use my existing muffler i won't have any advantage, others have said that it will be fine as long as the pipe size is reduced... From reading what you guys have posted, i believe that it will be fine if i just replace the pipe (it splits into 2x 2.25" pipes going into the straight-through mufflers with 3" tips). My rear mufflers and tips are fine, they look nice and i would rather not replace them unless i really have to. I have a very wide cutout where the exhaust come out under the bumper (due to the two large pipes) and so i really need either twin pipes or one of those horrible looking wide oval shaped things... so using my existing setup seemed the logical way to go (it's stainless steel too)

Oh, and I LOVE the illuminated SKYLINE on the rear... I WANT ONE!
-
Most certainly stay away from these. It's pretty much a $0.60c resistor in a box that makes the ECU think the air is cooler than it really is. It will therefore run slightly richer and cause problems down the track. Seriously... at $1/hp increase, if they really worked i'm sure everyone on these forums would have them! Stick with quality products for your skyline... and remember... if it seems too good to be true, it probably is
-
Yeah that (more fuel) and the fact that I've chewed through my clutch due to having to rev it higher and slip the clutch to take off without stalling... especially since i drive into uni and back home again often in heavy traffic, are the reasons why I would like to change the exhaust. I love the loudness of my exhaust and the power it has up around the 5000-7000 RPM area, but for practicality's sake i really need more torque down low.
-
Anybody got a ballpark figure as to what I can expect to pay for a semi-decent 2.5" system?

Hi Guys, I have a N/A R33 GTS which is pretty much stock apart from a 3" catback exhaust. What are the legal ramifications of adding a turbo to my car? It would technically not be a GTSt, but a GTS with engine modifications.. I am new to the modifications scene, and would like to know how it all works here in Vic. What am I required to do if i were to turbo my car. Am i required to get any form of engineers certificates? Am I required to fill out any forms? I am not planning on going overboard, and as far as i can tell, pretty much all of my mods would be "legal" (for example while I would be using a FMIC i would keep the stock panel filter rather than a Pod, etc). Please correct me if i am mistaken here though. Would I be allowed to drive this car on my P's with a turbo fitted? I don't want to get it all converted and then get barred from driving the thing due to power/weight restrictions or getting a canary I know most people will probably tell me to just sell the GTS and buy a GTSt, but there are two problems with that: firstly, I can't legally drive a R33 GTSt on P's, as it is more than 125kw/tonne. secondly, I already have my GTS and would love the learning experience of doing the work myself to turbo it. If anyone knows the official rules or can point me to somewhere that i can find it out, it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Sam.

Hmmm... so basically it's either whack a turbo on it (i know... everyone says it's better to just sell it and buy a turbo one, but I'd love to do it anyway as much for the learning experience as for the power gains ) or put a 2.5" catback system on it if i want more torque down low. Mine is pretty sluggish down low, even if i shift out of first just before the limiter (at about 6700), it bogs down slightly in second... and I only just beat a stock falcon or commodore at the lights. It gets up and goes alright once you really get it revving, but just has nothing down low. Just for the hell of it, I got the largest potato that i could find, and rammed it down one of my exhaust pipes. It was not quite big enough to completely block it off, but would have been 90% covered. I went for a bit of a spin and couldn't really notice any difference (apart from it being slightly quieter)... i looked at it was still stuck firmly so i figured i'd take it out later... Anyway, I went out later tonight and totally forgot it was in there... got home and there was no potato there... must've got hot enough to slightly cook the outside and became soft and fell out... haha would have been pretty funny to be following a car and a hot potato drop out of the exhaust pipe I have been toying with the idea of turbo-ing it for a while, but being on my P's I am subject to the 125kw/tonne limitations... dagnammit!!! (which reminds me, I've been meaning to ask... does anyone know if i were to turbo my car, would the police take the factory GTS power/weight figures? or those of a GTST? Coz technically it's a N/A GTS with some mods, not a GTST )
-
Too true. I have a 3" catback system on my N/A 33 with twin 3" mufflers and tips, and well... that is certainly loud.... but I love it. It's pretty hard to tell from that sound clip, but i would be guessing mine is probably louder. I frequently set off car alarms just by driving past in the carpark at uni (actually, i think it's an R32 skyline that i set off most days wonder if it's someone from here...). I don't really think of it as excessively loud, but most of the public would. And until I'm EPA'd I will be keeping it just as loud as it is

Hi Guys, before you go flaming me for not using the SEARCH button... i have. Now, here goes. My R33 GTS came with a 3" Mandrel Bend catback with twin mufflers and tips. After substantial reading, i understand that 2.5" would have been better... but the previous owner obviously didn't know this when they got the new exhaust system fitted. Now I love my exhaust... it sounds awesome (VERY loud but i love it ) but it really does lack when it comes to down-low torque. I would like to see if there is anything simple that i can do about it. It did cross my mind that i could try blocking off one of the mufflers... (with something like a potato ), but after more reading i'm not sure if that would work. Sure it would increase backpressure... but it doesn't eliminate the fact that it is a 3" system from the cat back. Would there be any problem arising from this? i.e. I couldn't imagine any damage would be cause (apart from the fact that I'd feel like a tool driving around with a potato in my exhaust while i tested it out ). If it was much better i would just get the second muffler blocked off (probably leave it on there coz it looks nicer ). Any feedback/opinions would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Sam.

Why Does My Sub Box Have 2 +, 2 - Terminals
Samon replied to 123456's topic in Car Audio & Electrical
123456, I know this thread is kinda old... but anyway With a dual-coil Sub, as I understand it, you have a coil on the actual cone, and a coil on the chassis. If you were to bridge + to + and - to -, you would actually be restricting the power of the sub because the two coils would be cancelling each other out. try running it like this: Connect the + of one coil to the - of the other coil. now connect the amp to the two unused terminals. (- from the first coil and + of the second one). Cheers, Sam. -
After looking through my R33 ENGINE SERVICE MANUAL that i bought off eBay, i found that there are two specifications for front-brakes: 20mm minimum for the single-pot calipers, and 24mm minimum for the twin-pot ones. For the rears it specifies an 8mm minimum. I am rather confused. Where did DBA get the 28mm and 16mm from? Also, my rears are within the nissan specs, but my fronts are within the specs for the single-pot, even though it has twin-pots. From looking at my front rotors it is extremely hard to believe that they were EVER the 26mm that the manual specifies for the standard thickness for the twin-pot calipers, so I think I will just leave it all as is and see how it goes. I certainly have no problems stopping, and haven't noticed any brake fade occurring, so i think it's alright.

I realize that the listing is for the GTS25T, but I can't find a listing for the R33 NA gts25.
-
Not really sure if it means anything, but I also noted that I have twin-piston calipers on the front and single-piston calipers on the rear. Everything looks pretty standard under there.
