Boostmeister has the right idea, ring your BP distribution center and go buy some. Remember to reffer to it as a "Solvent" and not a fuel. Don't mention that you are using it as a fuel -- say " I need it to clean engine parts and stuff". $48 for 20L is excellent and its straight from the refinery to you. You can't anything as pure as that! On a factory ECU note; whilst my 25% mix worked well ( I ran 14psi+ through my factory ic without my refrigeration on and it didn't ping, since turned it back to 10psi for long term use) I think its a good idea to reset the ECU and re-learn the fuel map to suit the higher octane. Reset it again when you switch back to normal.

If heat kills O2 sensors mine should have died along time ago. I've got my dump pipe wrapped up with DEI tape, No heat can escape (poor O2 sensor) you can hold onto the dump pipe with your bare hand even when the pipe underneath is red hot.
-
The improvement is ; * run more boost -- no pinging * turbo spools slightly quicker and earlier --- hotter exhaust gas * engine makes more power and is more responsive --- back of the seat you can feel (unlike off the shelf octane boosters). Im not sure about the O2 & cat , if people can run unleaded race fuels and not worry it won't be a problem. Have fun:D

Well toluene was used during the 'turbo era' of formula 1. Back when they were running 5bars(73psi) of boost in qualiying and 4bars(59psi) in race. The fuels were limited to 102 RON so 84% toluene and 16%n-heptane (has no octane rating to bring it back to 102). This fact should kill the debate about it being a 'dodgy' backyard ****tail. I posted this info the other day on the free horsepower thread on SDU. Don't go running straight toluene in a hury, the formula 1 cars had exhaust gas warming the petrol tank to help the toluene vaporise properly. I think starting off with 10-15% and working up. I have about 25% running with a little more boost than normal and it works real well. Thats not to say that a slightly lower octane mix might even go better if it combusts more effectively.

Toluene ---- is what you ask for . Its a solvent availible in 200L and 20L volumes. Don't go asking about premixed toluene -- they do it as a solvent, hence there is no fuel based tax on it. They will not mix it cause if they do they are breaking EPA laws and a bunch of other Tax laws.

Toluene is not benzene, it has a benzene molecule and therefore is not 'pure' benzene. You won't buy it from bunnings they don't stock it. Low volumes like 4L or 1L are expensive vs 20L / 200L drums. Chemist grade toluene is available from BP and others for much less than $120/20L as toluene is very easily refined to 100% purity and the stuff from the hardware store is '100%' toluene, due to advertising laws and laws governing hazardous materials they must display any products other than toluene in the container even if only by a general class of substance. 3L of pure toluene in 60L R33 tank (55L BP98) will yeild 99.2 RON. The fouling of plugs is a problem with Race fuels when mixtures are set for road fuels and the car is driven under light loads (around town). I reccomend toluene for the "day at the track" when higher boost and load are order of the day.

Yes, all fuels do that hence some people like to 'sniff' them to get the central nervous system effect. If fact ALL solvent based glues and paints have the same classification. This includes ordinary correction fluid like "liquid paper". Toluene is nothing special.

Well since toluene is an aromatic ( benzene based molecule ); 2% of BP 98 is Aromatic whilst I think Optimax is upto 5%. I'm not too sure about this but if Optimax is BP's only 98 octane competitor then this is right according to Bp's own comparison chart. At the end of the day our friends at BP claim the lowest Aromatic content and therefore will benifit from Toluene more. I can't get the smile off my face, this stuff is very good:D

Well there is two parts to the octane rating RON and MON . The best indicator of performance is RM/2, RON + MON / 2 = RM/2 rating. The RM/2 rating of Toluene is very very high at 114 RM/2. there is no problem posed to your engine running 40% tol and 60% BP98 appart from possible cold start performance and low rpm issues in cold weather and the same issues of running too rich (doing this for long periods of time is not good). At 60/40 your RON would be 107, the RM/2 of BP98 I can't find anywhere, it would be good to know.

You are thinking of straight Benzene , mechanics used to wash their hands with it many years ago until they discovered it caused cancer. Tolunene is not linked to causing cancer. Yes it is harmfull but, LESS harmfull than ordinary petrolium (It's still not a plaything tho') Please note the hazards identification, that tolunene is not linked to leukemia where as Petrol is. Here is the mineral data safety sheet for say ultimate 98 : http://www.msdsonline.com.au/BPAUST/msds/m...e=&uselogo=TRUE And here is the MDS for toluene : http://www.msdsonline.com.au/BPAUST/msds/m...e=&uselogo=TRUE there you go, just so you know

The method: Buy a can of PURE toluene from a hardware store (they don't all carry it unfortunately) about $23 I got 4L for. Go to BP service station Put in the Toluene , I put 4L in . Put in 3 times the amount of BP ultimate 98 as the amount of toluene. I put in 12L of BP98. Presto 104 RON fuel to go! (tolunene has a RON of 122 baby!) Oh yes the Myths: Toluene corrodes the fuel lines ---- NO it doesn't. Toluene is deadly poison ----- Yes , but no more harmful than petrol.

Tolunene mix at 25% tolunene and 75% BP 98 Test. Calculated octane RON is 104! This stuff rocks! I often run Wynns race formula octane booster with BP 98, and I find it improves performance a small but, noticable amount in the upper rev range. 25% Tolunene is VERY noticable and from down low too. It knocks the spots off other octane boosters and this is why: Ultimate 98 uses only 2% Aromatic compounds, and therefore is using the most advanced non-aromatic "octane boosting" additives to achieve 98 octane. A reason why octane boosters will work better with the Caltex 98(vortex its called here) is it has 5+% Aromatics. As indicated the higher exhaust gass temperatures spool the turbo earlier, a symptom I tested over and over and over again. I could easily run higher boost and a little more aggressive timing but, since I have a ceramic turbine and a stock computer I will leave that for someone else to have fun with for now! Any questions?

here is the e-manage link for a clone cable being sold, the original is just a usb to serial cable with a voltage regulator ic. It's quite a helpful link for those considering the e-manage. http://www.mkiv.com/tmp/emanage/
-
The cable isn't a problem to make if you have an original to work from (given the emanage case does not have a standard 9pin serial connection). If the interface on the e-manage is a serial 9pin as well its going to be a null-modem serial (not the normal kind) but one you can purchase from a computer store ready made. Haltech use this kind of connection on their ECU's.

I'm sure you will hit that curb one day Joe, lets face it when you missed all the others up till now by miles and you only JUST missed this one! You are starting to get closer...and closer......and closer....and closer.....your eyes are getting sleepy......
-
Ok:rolleyes: Yes its a real program to go with the e-manage piggyback ecu. Upgrades the $405 e-manage AFC functions to full 3D timing/fuel map, with real time data logging tuneable through a PC. With more options than you can poke a stick at. The link is down but I have put the program on a CD
-
I was looking this morning and the site has removed the link, I still have the software so I will transfer it to cd tomorrow. What sort of results did they get with their e-manage running in AFC mode?
-
Anyone know who it is? Drove into Wangara , I did too to check out an R32 GTR for a friend.
-
Well He's sold on it now! I expect he will be posting the news shortly.
-
I had a morning 'fun run' with a dude in a very nice black R33 (quite mean looking with a great sounding exhaust and nice alloys). The Plates were: R33 GTS . Who wouldn't want those plates! (given R33 GTST is already taken). It seemed to go ok, wonder what mods it has or if anyone knows it.
-
I was browsing through the various forums and things on the e-manage and appart from it having rave reviews, even from dumb ass yanks, I encountered what I thought was a file of actual screen shots from the software. I thought 5odd meg was quite alot of screenshots to have in a zip file and after downloading the file I found that I had just aquired the full version of the software! I don't own the e-manage (yet) so its not of any real use, but what a great peice of hardware that thing is for the money. The software alludes to the real power of the package. For anyone thinking about a new ECU, go check out what this thing does its great!
-
Your AFs are not helped by that Blitz ECU of yours; I assume it aint tuned for australian el'crapo fuels, aggressive maps aside. Go buy an e-manage. Go buy a fuel regulator.
-
Yes I've heard the Formaz unit has a speed limit issue, a number of the cars at motorvation had this problem (notably the V8s with tall diff ratios). It also seems to read a little higher than some. If the guys take it to PSI I'm sure it will still pull some great numbers with that soccerball sized turbo!
-
That means the speedworks silvia's 700rwhp is probably more like 400 or so(not that its a bad figure). Good dyno to go to if you want to claim australia's highest dyno reading for a SR20DET?
-
I think we need to add Genie Exhausts Dyno to the list of generous dyno's in perth, what do you guys think? I ran a nice r33 that had just had a fresh 300+rwhp dyno on this dyno and made it look a tad slow. I'm damn sure I don't have anywhere near this much, let alone more( neither would he). His car - fmic, EBC - 13/14psi, s-afc, full exhaust, bov. He seemed a little confused after I told him he didn't have that much power.
