Why do people hate the R33?
Demon Dave replied to Laurence's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
R33's are all good. I really like them, just wanted something a little newer when I got a new car so ended up going for an R34. Everyone's got their own favorite, be it 30, 31, 32, 33 , 34 or whatever. They're all good! -
There should be a light in the boot

Hi Mark, I had an R33 GTS (RB20E) for over 2 years. Great car, just lacked power (and the choice of aftermarket wheels was limited by the 4 studs...) As for tuning options, even here in Japan I had major hassle trying to find suitable parts. In the end I decided it was better economics (for me) to save my money towards a more tunable (or more powerful) car, but it all comes down to personal choice. If you'd like to squeeze some extra horses out of the engine, a pod filter (Trust does one for the RB25DE which *should* fit the RB20E), exhaust (fujitsubo make one suitable, I think) and wheels (Rays CV europe in my case)... Good luck! Dave

Looking forward to your write up - turbo'ing the RB25DE is an option I've been thinking about for a while now. I'd be very interested to hear how you went about it, any problems, unforseen difficulties etc. Dan - BTW, I didn't check the part numbers for the injectors, will try and get down to Nissan again in the coming week. I'd imagine they'd be different to the R33's & R32's though (part number wise) but probably not in terms of flow rate...

Spot on FunkyMonkey - the NEO part of the R34 engines basically means they've tweaked it to produce fewer/cleaner emmisions. However, the R34 engines do benefit from ECU tweaks (and also manifold flow characteristics I've heard) that give it the extra power. Not forgetting improvements in the VVT side of things... BTW, NEO = Nissan Ecology Orientated performance...

I used to run a Trust Airinix (yellow) pod filter - it was very loud, but IMHO it was very crap at doing what it was supposed to be doing, namely filtering! Took it off to clean it, and holding it up to the light you could clearly see right through it. Call me a pessimist, but if you can see through the filter then the chances are plenty of sh1t can get through and into your engine... I've since ditched it, and replace the stock airbox. OK, it's a lot quieter, but there is no noticeable loss of power and I can rest assured my engine aint breathing in tons of dust and crap on a daily basis.. My 2 yens worth... But, damn did that Trust pod sound good!

I had a look on Yahoo Auctions Japan for you, sometimes things like that appear, but unfortunately no luck. I've heard there are a few garages specializing in older skylines (though none near me), you could try seeking one of them out and getting in touch. Nissan main dealers (Prince etc) are usually quite helpful and often have parts for older cars in stock / or they can be ordered (but they're generally expensive). It might be worth a try...
-
I'm not 100% sure from your pics, but your car looks like a KHGC211 (GT turbo?). All of the older skylines are pretty rare (and sought after) so getting parts is possible, but at a premium. A good place to start looking might be a nissan dealership...

Rezz - about 3 or 4!! As an aside, most of the people I know of, who drive an R34 with the triptronic box say that don't usually bother with the steering controls... I personally think Nissan did a very good job in upping the power figures for the R34 range, by tweaking the RB series engines, improving (or adding?) VVT to the NEO engines they managed to boost power/torque by a fair bit... So that always raises the question - how come the R34 GTR doesn't get VVT and NEO technology? Dave

Strange things about R34's
Demon Dave replied to 666DAN's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
MY old GTS was powered by an RB20E. It wasn't that bad! It wasn't good either, but it was a skyline and it was cheap. So, if I had to guess why Nissan made the Skyline range available with a RB20E I'd say to reduce the cost of the entry model to appeal to more people. The surprising thing about the skyline is tha although it's a kick-ass sports car, it's also a 4 door family sedan that Grandpa Joe likes driving around in...and granpa Joe usually doesn't care how many cams are under the bonnet... -
Not sure yet, maybe just one or two - the thread is here. Will keep you posted. Dave

The R34 25GT (NEO RB25DE) makes 200PS standard (around 200bhp), not sure KW's. which is slightly more than the RB25DE found in the earlier R32/R33. The engine also has higher torque outputs, and late model R34's have a slight improvement over earlier R34's. AFAIK, R34's were available with either Triptronic Auto boxes (+ / - gear change and steering wheel controls) or a 5sp manual. On paper the R34 GTT (RB25DET) and the R34 GTR (RB26DETT) put out the same power (280ps), but of course, that's "on paper"...

I take it you mean car parts. Probably the best place to go would be SuperAutobacs (see Rezz'z Photo diary for an example of what can be found there). Also, Yellow Hat, Drivers Stand and Nismo Omori are worth checking out. There's so many great places to part with money in tokyo!

A teacher I used to know did the exact same thing - buy a car, drive it here for one year and then ship it back to Australia and sell it on. I was thinking of doing something similar (shipping back to the UK) but I was told that you needed to drive the car for a whole year before it could be exported? Is that right? Pajero's can be brought relatively cheaply here, and then sold in England for a lot more (even after figuring in shipping costs...)

Everything you always wanted to know about Japan...
Demon Dave replied to Demon Dave's topic in Japan
Rezz, right on the money there. That pretty much sums up the word gaijin as far as I understand it. By the way, if you want to use a more "polite" term, use Gaikokujin... Generally though, most foreigners refer to each other as Gaijin's anyway! -
10 AM sounds great. There's a similar thread on the GTROC UK boards, some members might be coming over (yet to be finalized) so there's a possibilitiy of members of both boards meeting up at TAS...

Is Manga childish in Japan? No way. If my wife is anything to go by - her favorite channel is Animax! (Nothing but Japanese Anime). Nah, I would say that anime/manga is anything but childish in Japan One of her (and my sons) favorite shows on Animax is a program called Dragon Ball Z. I don't really watch it myself, but from I've seen it's basically a story of a group of weird guys/gals who go around Japan fighting and generally getting the sh1t kicked out of themselves (only to win at the last minute) each week...

No probs Christian. Sorry the misunderstanding! Dave -
Great. We now have a Japan specific forum. I think the admin are keen to keep talk about Japan in here only, so I think it might be a good idea to have the various threads relating to Japan moved to this forum... Dave

R34 is +40. I think it was the same for the R33 GTS.
-
I'd also be a little concerned. In my experience most Skylines always remain pretty much at the mid point on the temp guage, even during very hot weather or when thrashing it...
-
BTW - just wanna check, is everyone OK with how to get to the event? Getting down to Makuhari Messe from Tokyo isn't that difficult...
