I have 3 Nissan turbos now, presumably all off 2 litre motors. The first two were on redtop RB20DET's, one is marked 16v9 and has a flush shaft/splined nut on the comp side, the other is marked 16v7 and appears to have a smaller diameter shaft (at least the threaded section) with about 5mm of threaded shaft poking out past the hex retaining nut on the comp side. Both have visually the same comp wheel (haven't measured) and visually the same turbine with 11 blades visible *although* fasteners are different on both and I haven't measured them. Turbo 3 I am told is from a VG20DET, and "bigger than an RB20 turbo but smaller than an RB25", however looks and measures up externally identical to the housings of both my other turbos, it is marked 16v6. Claimed to have made 154rwkw on an otherwise stock VG20DET (stock cooler etc). Shaft and nut setup looks the same as the 16v9 turbo. Turbine wheel only has 9 blades visible, and side by side compared to the others the pitch of the comp blades are shallower. I believe its a ceramic turbine. I am of the opinion they are all basically the same, and really only obtained the apparent VG20 item because it will fit straight up to my old ECCS redtop RB20, and has fark all play compared to my other two shitters. No particular advantage (apart from wear) likely to be had from any of them?

I like to say I build model cars... In reality I start big modelling projects and..... ahh that seems to be it lately : Anyway, I've been working on this KPGC10 GT-R. It started as a Tamiya model (as the tamiya one is by far the best and the only one with engine bay detail), however I'm fitting a Fujimi L-series motor with triple carbs, tube headers, metal bellmouths etc instead of the S20. Externally its getting massive works style flares to cover Fujimi watanabes which scale out to 15x14" in the back (with "345/35R15" advan semi slicks..) and 15x10" fronts,... The rears are almost hard up against the wheelarch inside to fit under those flares, haha. Its got a cage sitting in it from my Calsonic HR31 kit, which it might get as its closer to the hakosuka than the 31, so I'm planning to use it in the hakosuka and refabricate a better one for the HR31. Have some period style racing seats to go in it too, and made an aluminium sheet rear firewall (will have no back seat). I've got an oil cooler and stuff for the front, should be cool in a few months when its all done. Car as it sits now, long way to go yet: Motor, waiting on distributor and plug leads, breather hoses etc to finish it off: I have a big pile of other kits waiting, I'm building a Bosozoku style C110 coupe, and I have, erm, 4 HR31 skyline GTS-R kits and one HR31 GTS-R calsonic race car to do...

Looks like I've got a VG20DET turbo coming, its a mild upgrade for the old RB20 - bigger than an RB20DET turbo, a little smaller than an RB25DET one. If I can finalise my campus loan soon it might get more interesting, lol.

Datsun Minilights(wantabe ?)
floody replied to hgc211 turbo's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
Someone might correct me, but the KPGC10 and KPGC110 GT-R Skylines both came from the factory with steel rims. I'd suggest that , as others noted, you're looking for RS-watanabe rims, SSR RS8s, Black Racing 8 spokes, or possibly Panasports. Nissan DID make a superlite/minilite/RS8 styled wheel as a Nismo option for HR31 skylines in the late 80's, though I doubt thats the one you're looking for (15x7 +30). -
Got a replacement RB20DET, so hopefully will have the car going a bit after new years (I want to get a few things and do some other stuff before I fit the new motor). Its just another redtop, but it has good compression (170psi most cylinders), all the electrical connectors and stuff are in good nick and its pretty clean externally, doesn't appear to have any real leaks.

Custom plates are great - they help the police know who to do the random checks on.

Ok, I'll give him a heads up. So I take it all this applies equally to the SOHC motors as the DOHC ones? Thankyou for the info!
-
Yeah High Energy aftermarket baffled, big volume sump. Definitely not having cornering g-loading related oil surge problems.
-
Ahh okay, I had a feeling that might be the case. Thanks for that, I'll let the old man know.
-
Just get some turbo rotors? You mean hubs and rotors right? It may have no relevance, but the go with the HR31 skylines is front and rear hubs from a Z31 turbo 300ZX.

Just a quick question.... My old man looks after a VL turbo IP car for his boss's son, they've done a couple of meetings now and it has a strange habit of pumping a shitload of oil into the catch tank, like 1.5 litres after practice.., doesn't appear to be blowby, more like oil retention in the top end? Its an RB30ET, but is this a common RB thing? Nothing adverse appears to be happening, its not like its built to really open clearances, the motor is fresh and new top to bottom. A few people who had worked on RB30ET's did mention it might be an issue...But I thought maybe if it is an issue which the DOHC ones share, people might have some ideas? If its just a design issue in the oiling system of the RB30ET, fair enough. It doesn't seem to be causing any form of damage, its just annoying.

Roughly How Much Is A Passage Worth?
floody replied to cheekystylez's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
Like a cefiro? The Passages are very cheap. You can pick them up for little more than $1-2k over the price of a good stock aussie one, for that you get the RB20DET, IRS + R200, HICAS, bigger brakes, much more luxurious interior and many more features. They are also cheaper generally compared to 2 door HR31 imports. -
2JZGTE would be an interesting (and worthwhile) conversion if you just have to be different... RD28 with a safari turbo kit?

Roughly How Much Is A Passage Worth?
floody replied to cheekystylez's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
Nah, they were available manual for sure - basically anything you could have in a coupe you could have in the hardtop. I think its priced a tad high honestly, I'd be thinking $6500 with the rego is a ballpark figure, but then you are getting some good bits.... If you could get it for say $6800-7000 reg'd it would be ok, not a screaming deal but ok. How many kms? Is it the early style front (like a pintara) and rear (lights without the clear bubble covers)? What year? If its any older than mid '87 , $7k is a lot of money too. -
Yeah you've inspired me. My RB20DET burnt a valve so I reckon I might try and shoehorn in a Viper V10 with twin T88s, midmounted, with a 6 speed transaxle. Should fix that.

Roughly How Much Is A Passage Worth?
floody replied to cheekystylez's topic in Classic & Vintage (1950's-1980's)
It would want to be mint. Passages rarely get within $2-3k of HR31 coupe prices, so with good coupes at $8-10k, it would want to be pretty reasonable. Most go in the $5-7,500 range. Need to know more though! Is it RB20DET? if it is, NICS or ECCS? Auto or manual? LSD or open diff? Velour "pimp" style interior or skyline style cloth GT interior? Early or late model panels and lights? -
Wastegate Not Screaming? Lost Boost Too.
floody replied to AlpineFreak's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Sounds very much like when my turbo seized up, right down to the rough idle. -
Get a jigsaw and carve up some ricer's bonnet?
-
yeah, probably not a bad idea, I guess I could just ask them to replicate my cat's flange spacing and positioning on a 3" pipe.
-
Just wondering if anyone knows a source for cat eliminator pipes (preferably online, but if not thats ok), to suit skylines? JMS used to have them but they've disappeared in the site restructure and ownership change. Ideas?
-
Still have the intercooler on the GT-R? I'd be willing to offer the same sort of money the hybrid ones etc go for, say $200?

Who makes the "aero special" DR30 kit? is it Fujimi or Aoshima? I've got the Jenesis DR30 kit in mid build, and a KPGC10 with a transplanted L28 with webers in place of the S20 (really an L24 from a fujimi 240z), a C110 GT-X "bosozoku" style with massive camber, stretchwall tyres etc, and FIVE HR31 Skyline kits (one of them is the 4 door hardtop). Hopefully I can finish them all Aoshima made these stretchwall tyres + deep dish old school wheel sets for a series of bosozoku style kits - not the "works" series HLJ have, something completely different that only aoshima hobbyworld japan stocked - they're insane! I've got SSR MK1s, Longchamp XR4s, and Yayoi Sakura... same model as ^ I was trying different wheels

All good, though I'd say get a boxier rear bar than that one - its a tad smooth, maybe whatever matches the front bar? And don't do the sheep thing and get the GT-R replica spoiler... One of those lip spoilers, the one that just fits the dip in the bootlid and doesn't come up higher than the quarter panels would look very fat... Also, in my opinion your wheels won't cut it with a fatter bodykit.
