Short runner, Forward facing plenum is probably going to be the solution..

The poor old redtop RB20DET in my R31 coupe cracked the shits... Cylinder 1 - 130psi Cylinder 2 - 130psi Cylinder 3 - 130psi Cylinder 4 - 130psi Cylinder 5 - 130psi Cylinder 6 - 0psi Plus turbo is stuffed. So it hasn't moved in nearly 2 months. Anyone got a cheap RB20DET? doesn't matter, haven't got any money anyway, lol.

160-200rwkw ? How To Get There
floody replied to unarmed_skyline's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Short of a built high comp 3 litre bottom end, cams, maybe injectors, and ECU I can't see it happening. Theres an SOHC RB30E on r31skylineclub forums that did 150kw, but it has a LOT done to it. Not worth it from a RB25DE, sell your car and get a GTS-T if you're chasing power (and get the bigger brakes, gearbox etc too which you ought to go for even at 160rwkw)... If you are considering the NA mods for insurance reasons, the mods needed for that power won't be any cheaper.... -
IMO, I wouldn't bother. Go to something like a GCG HiFlow RB25DET turbo, will still look quite stock and have substantially better power prospects. I could be wrong, but I suspect thats what people will say. The other thing is that low mount upgrades that fit your stock manifold would let you keep your factory heatshielding (mostly) which would look quite stock too....

Has it ever run?

In my car the problem was lessened a lot by cleaning the CAS plug up...But never totally disappeared. I do suspect TPS, I probably will never know as the current motor is unlikely to every be used again.
-
Wow, that looks great - are you sure you want to put all that over the top Veilside stuff on? IMHO it would look best with just the little "drag lip" on the bootlid - the veilside R32 kit is a bit "whore's handbag" style...But thats me.
-
Nice conversion! tidy result. Nearly the sort of 180 I'd build, though I 'd keep the CA-style front panels (I just like em) on my build.
-
My redtop RB20DET did something that seems similar, dies if you are hard on the throttle then snap off the throttle and onto the clutch....Never figured out what it was. search around on here, there is a thread about something similar, people were talking about a dirty earth from the ecu or some such thing causing it.

Off topic, but is it just me or is every car in those mags built with the proceeds of "working in I.T." or "working with computers"....Amazing how many early 20s computer geeks with huge disposable incomes there are these days!
-
I can't say I've used the car stuff, but have run the motorcycle stuff in a number of roadrace and MX bikes - it is the TOP of the game in that field. If the car stuff is anywhere near the quality of the moto stuff, it should be very good gear.
-
Only things I'd suggest to fix your problem is get an early HR31 or an R32/33/34 - because thats the only way you'll get lights like you describe without making the car look poxy. Most likely you can get fresh light assemblies from somewhere like jenesis ( http://www.r30.co.jp )....

As JIC are one of the few companies who do an out-of-the-box coilover setup for a HR31 skyline, I'm interested to know if anyone knows whether they have a direct importer in Australia. I haven't been able to dig up any info on getting them locally. So, anybody know? I'm not interested in the S13 front end conversion before anyone mentions it.
-
I say go for it - however.....Your car will have to be gunbarrel straight or it will look ghetto. It will actually need to be done by someone pretty good on the gun to look smooth. And definitely satin, not matte. Satin with carbon fibre details would look very stealth... If I ever get to build a track HR31, it will definitely be satin black.

Gibson Block (rb20 Parts)
floody replied to mait32's topic in For Sale (Private Car Parts and Accessories)
Any chance of a reply to the questions instead of just typing "bump"? I think it would be useful if you could say just what is special about a "Gibson Motorsport" block, given that they would have had to use Redtop ECCS blocks under gr. A regs, can you explain how they're any different to a run of the mill redtop block? And is the head NICS redtop, ECCS redtop, or ECCS silvertop? -
I'd have to buy a modified GC10 skyline 2 door, preferably L28, triple carbs, deep dish rims and full flare kit. GT or GT-X I should imagine. I could get on here easy enough given the age, but personal importing would mean a) personal inspection, B) plenty of time "in country" picking up spares and so forth, so I could ship it back with some spare quarter panels and so on. If not a Nissan, then definitely a cheapish NSX.

Gibson Block (rb20 Parts)
floody replied to mait32's topic in For Sale (Private Car Parts and Accessories)
What's special about the block? Its a redtop block too, right? What about the head, is it complete? Redtop or silvertop? -
Actually Stu, I'm not certain on the current generations of cars, but the first two generations of Excels used Hyundai manufactured, licensed variants of Mitsubishi motors. The S-coupe's have turbo mitsubishi motors, quite similar to the Lancer GSR's I'm lead to believe.

As far as I know the Passage GT model designation was new for the 4 door pillarless HR31. I'd say someone added the badges on the HR30 - it is a HR30, not a local MR30?
-
So, is yours the two tone R30 with passage GT etc badges on it? I saw it parked in hobart (in the brick carpark next to the big argyle one) and was wondering if it was a tarted up local one or an import... Hard luck on the windscreen, at least its the same as the local one, right?

Very true - I could go and get some shitty CSA/ROH/Performance/Speedy wheel pack to fit my car any day of the week, but as it stands I'm still looking for a good set of period correct (i.e 80's style), tasteful rims to suit my R31 coupe - its a boxy, 80's car, it should have 80's rims. I think I've found some 17" volk mesh though , very 80's gr. A touring car style.... And hopefully a GTS-R wing will be soon, which is massive, fibreglass and....... a factory option! Probably just as much FRP in it as some 2 foot tall monstrosity though.. A little bit of taste goes a long way, IMHO. I can't believe the previous owner of my car took the nice looking stock 15x6" alloys off to fit a rather ungracious looking set of 15x6.5" Auscar branded mags....

Faulty Coils? Misfire At High Rpm? Read This.
floody replied to Zahos's topic in General Maintenance
My HR31 was displaying many symptoms of cracked coils. Farted about changing coils and plugs, near to no difference. One day the ECU kick panel cover fell off - problem gone. Further investigation has shown up a sloppy ECU connector. Just something else to look at. -
I have had a good look at it actually, and I wasn't saying it won't be the goods. I have no doubt it should be right up there. Lets wait and see what it does.
-
I was thinking the same thing. To throw a cat amongst the pigeons, Max Griffith's HR31 being substantially lighter than most GT-Rs, and with 383kw at the treads - I wonder what would happen if they stuck big slicks on that and ran it down the quarter? Rear end squat could be a big problem, but if it could hook up at all it would have to run a good time.
