What other old Nissans are there? any 70's stuff?? And why have they got 4 different DR30 RS's ??

tHts what I'm trying to find out
-
Thats why I'm interested in them, in a nutshell. It would be ok to do up an aussie one with Ti bits etc, but I reckon a jap one, with IRS (as far as I know, I've seen a few references to R200 diffs etc on Jap pages), passage style interior etc would be nice, and just more "factory" than a retrimmed up Aussie GXE with a bunch of retrofitted interior bits. Besides, I've already got a GX sedan, I'd like something different!

I'm looking into the possibility of importing an R31 passage wagon, as I'll need a wagon soon, don't have stagea $ , and they're apparently a bit more plush than the aussie GXE wagon. So far I know... -IRS -RB20ET and auto (RB20E or CA18S in lower spec models) -late models have Aussie S3 Ti style front end. -should be fairly similar inside to a Passage GT hardtop, ie yakuza pimp style. I have no idea on whether the rear suspension is interchangeable with the coupe/passage HT, or what sort of money they might command. Any info on them and pricing would be handy. BTW, I'm interested in the later editions with the updated front styling.

Latest things I've seen here (which may or may not have been here for yonks) were: -JZA80 supra with crazy heavy metalflake flip paint, -a nice silver JZA80 with some veilside style stuff and white rims (and no F&F rice like some other Hobart cars...) -white S13 silvia with black/polish mesh SSR or volk style rims, very drifty looking, maybe a trust style front bar (currently seems to have none) - and the best the one that makes me drool every time I see it, Passage GTS (4dr pillarless R31)down here, black/charcoal, late R32 ECCS motor and box, twin plate clutch, greddy FMIC, HKS oil cooler, 'mechanical' LSD, JIC damper adjustable coilovers, cusco castor/camber kit, massive exhaust, Bride black/grey drivers seat, sabelt (IIRC) harness.... It came from JMS.

I see your point Merli.. I was only making the point of 10k will go nowhere. But that in mind, pistons don't have to be whiz bang forged ones, decent cast ones could be had a lot cheaper than that, and my estimates were mostly on second hand parts (coilovers, wheels, cams, sprockets, exhaust, seat, box, clutch, etc) and a lot of DIY labour - and even in that case my point is still there, as you say, 10k won;t go far.
-
You know, 10K really wouldn't stretch far modding a GTS-T. -Engine - cams, rebuild (say with good pistons etc), balance etc, theres 2k or so gone already, or more.. -Wheels/tyres - say you got good japanese rims or simmons or something, with quality rubber, theres another 3k -Clutch, LSD, RB25 box, say goodbye to another 3k or so... we're up to 8.. You might squeak in some coilovers, and a seat, maybe a steering wheel. Done your dough and still more to do it properly (don' forget little stuff like bushes, bearings....). No turbo upgrade in that either... May as well get a GT-R. Why did I go through the mods as if you were buying a 10k cheaper GTS-T and modding it? Personally, I wouldn't ever buy a car with "10k" of someone elses mods, in that case I'd have a few k spare to fix their mistakes..

Yeah I remember the Black 32, is it still in Hobart?

Commodore VL vs Aussie R31 Skyline
floody replied to friendlyfrog's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I like my R31. The fit and finish and overall build quality is better than the VL. It feels "sportier" to drive. It handles better. The interior is marginally more modern. Overall they are just a higher quality vehicle. erm...this is mostly myth. VL weighs about 1250(SL) to 1355 (Calais) DRY (no fuel, oil, coolant), the R31 quoted DRY weight is 1320 (GX) to 1400 (Ti, GTS) . In fact mine weighed in at 1280kg* with ~30l of fuel, plus full oil, coolant etc, spare, toolkit, melways, all the crap you find inside...Making its dry weight more like 1245 or so The R31 is also purported to have 4kw more than the VL. As it happens mine runs substantially harder than most NA VL's, my only mods were replacing the panel filter in the airbox with a direct replacement K&N one. The R31 also runs a substantially lower diff ratio which really helps response off the line, and doesn't really hurt top speed, they're still geared for ~230kmh at 6k in top (manual) ....on a closed course In the twisties or at the track, similarly equipped R31 should pants the VL too. This is true. I think the CAS probs are pretty well shared , though I haven't had a worry with mine in 2 years and counting, car is up to 260000kms.. The head cracking is more of a VL thing, as the radiator is mounted lower and they're prone to air bubbles vapour locking coolant out of the head, nasty, as its the high spot... Be sure to bleed the intake manifold of air when changing coolant in either one, to be safe. Now there are some downsides, things like brake upgrades, RB30ET conversions, mag wheel availability all suffer. Replacement Panels are hard to find in good condition, especially the left side and especially 10/88 onwards build cars with the updated front and rear ends. Mechanicals are pretty bulletproof, bar the diffs which seem to be a little fragile/prone to premature wear, but can be fixed. But if you want a nicer car, the R31 is it. *Taken at an accurately calibrated weighbridge (ie can weigh down to my girlfriend's 60 Kg accurately). My car is a 1989 Series 3 R31 sedan, it is a GX, and it is a manual. Automatics and wagons will be heavier. -
Maybe they'll be extending it from Diesel's characters exodus to mexico? I believe he drove off into the desert in a chevelle , if you watch the little extra bit at the end of the 1st ones credits. In that case - go the muscle cars... But in any case, I think it will be teh suck, bros...

If you can tell me the stupid attitudes and behaviour have evaporated, then I'll take it back.

Doesn't raise the average intelligence level of the members. I was a member for a while myself, saw the stupid behaviour, and left. I don't want to be associated with dickheads and with 120 members (despite the best efforts of the hard working organisers), theres bound to be more than a few. Since it only takes one, well thats bad odds to me. Hats off to them for doing something though! And the supercruise weekend was one of the first times I've been able to drive through town in the evening without the "blockie bandits" screaming around making dicks of themselves, so hats off to them for attracting the dickheads away, like mosquitoes to a flame..

Bike Riders Advice Please.. R6 or CBR 600RR
floody replied to N/A®'s topic in General Automotive Discussion
I'll suggest it again, if you are looking for the most comfortable, controllable 600, then go for the Kawasaki ZX-636 . At least test ride one before you buy one of the others..... Oh and: -Yamaha build quality = average at best. -Honda = wait and see how long your gearbox lasts (they've been building fast bikes for over 30 years and haven't yet got it right)... I'm a biased Kawasaki man. But for a reason! -
Exactly, as Phat MR said, why not one of the DOHC VG's I suggested, instead of the gutless old SOHC one? Would be fairly unique in that car (since nobody really modifies them much anyway), make plenty of power, and be cheap as chips, especially in single turbo form?
-
It would probably be more than doable to sneak in a VG30DETT from a Z32, or, probably easier and just as good, a single turbo VG30DET from one of nissan's pimp cars. And C H E A P !
-
I just recently heard they have problems with shagged steering boxes that are hard to rectify - ie parts can't be had? Thanks for the info so far guys, thats exactly the sort of stuff I was after. Hopefully when I do pick one up the plan is a rebuilt and beefed up (rods, pistons, head gasket, cams, valve springs) engine straight off the bat, and with any luck a decent front mount/injectors/computer, with a big turbo coming later. So they run the old longnose R200? arse. I hoped they'd be the shortnose one. How are the gearboxes for durability? I'd go for a twin plate clutch straight up, but the box itself worries me a little. cheers guys, floody

I'd go either the brakes or a good mechanical 2 way diff... What brakes are on it?

Did SOMEONE get pics!?!

Make sure you consider the Kawasaki 636 . No offence to Honda or Yamaha owners, but with kawasakis, every element of their build quality is nicer. My 2 c .
