theyre listings are all over the place though... hence the possibility ive ended up with the wrong HG. i might try calling the main office or soemthing tomorrow but here in perth its hard to track down anything

timing is back as far as it goes - 5 degrees approx the engine is a 2nd hand one from wrecker so probably had a stocker... is there a difference between the RB20DE and RB20DET head gaskets?

does the head gasket from the RB20DE and RB20DET vary at all? i recently replaced my head gasket and now the engine is pinging like crazy so am thinking maybe theyve given me the wrong one and the engine is running higher compression... if anyone has the part number for the RB20DET head gasket thatd help alot as ive still got my receipt and can check it against that. cheers adam

paul; yes as far as i know i guess the next step is to get a dyno run after the turbos rebalanced. but i dont think its gunah make FA difference

paul; i know that, but WHAT effects turbo efficiencty? turbo was completely overhauled in the wheel replacement.

i know its easy to point to the turbo. but why? a turbo speicalist of 25years says its not the turbo, im inclined to believe him.

no-one has explained to me WHY the turbo could be causing excessive heat. can you? what causes a turbo to produce hot air?

i told him all that he said its not the turbo. he suggests to get temp probes into the system and find where the heat is coming from. he says that if hed changed something a great deal then hed suspect the turbo but downsizing the turbine wheel by 0.25" using the same housings wouldnt make a difference. besides we havent changed the compressor side of the turbo AT ALL. so it should be the same

paul; steve swears that what he's done isnt a problem he showed me the size of a T3- RB30DET turbine wheel and mine makes it look tiny. he reckons my exhaust wheel is huge for a 2L car

paul; the turbo is coming off, so i can take it in to grant if neccesary sizings are 54mm comp, 2" turbine comp AR .50 turbine .63

according to steve (united) the balance issue wouldnt affect performance

yeh that car is kinda like a bastard child

so steve might have explained in great detial what was wrong, but all paul translated is 'something is wrong'

steve only really talks to paul, then i get a translation from paul. like chinese whispers!

yeh well next week ill get the turbo off and take it in then well see how a balanced turbo and no cat help things

steve (SST) just told me 'theres something wrong' balancing shouldnt affect performance too much tho, this doesnt solve my problem

I recently downsized my turbine wheel from 2.25" to 2" to help spool-up. however i ran it on the dyno the other day and we cant get any more than 10psi out of it otherwise its pings like crazy. it makes 230rwhp @ 10psi but anything over that its just pings so we have to wind back timing and add fuel and we end up with the same power figure! The 2 suggestions that the tuner had to offer were that it was backpressure in the cat, or the turbo is producing too much heat. I've since replaced the cat, and been to speak to the engineer who rebuilt the turbo. he says that the changes we made wouldnt have affected output temps at all, as it was only the turbine wheel that was downsized by .25"... what else could be causing this pinging problem??
