I'll be amazed if you can find any kit lens (or any P&S) that can produce sharp clear pics at 1:1 crop Yes it can - maybe do exactly what you said - do some side by side auto tests (making sure settings are reset) - then go from there OR if you care that much you could always do something crazy like getting a good lens for $137 then you can do some side by side comparisons at 50mm between the 50mm lens and the 18-55mm kit lens

nah he doesn't have noise reduction on ps the thing letting you down is your lenses mate - not the camera but even on auto with crappy kit lenses it will still be better i think

FWIW my D80 takes HEAPS better pics than my $200 camera (which is a Canon S5 IS)

assuming subject is not moving: non moving camera (tripod/ledge, timer etc) right aperture (ie sweet spot) iso 100 (if either subject or camera is moving rules change)

Photo's look fine to me.. I suspect you were expecting too much (they are only kit lenses after all) Agree with others about your white balance being weird.. (not sure why its looks so bad - normally auto isn't that bad) Also you might find photo's to be a little sharper when you are shooting in the lens's sweet spot Shooting wide open (F3.5 at 18mm or f5.6 at 55mm) or very closed (f22 etc) wont yield the best results (ie all your book shots for example are at 5.6, dog is at f11 and looks perfect, and car one might just have the focus off a little)

Not I don't actually light paint - just really annoying how my camera doesn't show how long shutter has been open for when doing long exposures Having said that it is about the only thing I don't like about my camera (and only an problem when doing night time shooting or using the 10-stop ND filter) Seems like a good post for the chat thread - or better yet its own thread!

As promised You would think so wouldn't you! How hard could it be! *sigh*

On a more serious note - it is actually pretty amazing - ive used it to delete trees before

not really sure why you have the or in there.. they are the same thing - or you mean he could have done the bracketing automatically or manually ps dont think that photo even needs to be bracketed for more detail in the sky - if you want the clouds to be more visible just apply a gradient filter to that photo
