Give Me A Ride Or Opinion (Please!) - Bilstein Or Coilovers
Rob260 replied to darksky34's topic in New South Wales
That's a great price, I paid significantly more for mine (Z32) -
Just a quick update for anyone interested. I ended up getting Metropolitan Driveshaft Services http://metropolitandriveshafts.com.au/ to make the shaft. Went with a 3.5" chrome moly tube with 1350 Hardie Spicer "lubed for life" (I was happy to grease them but these unis have thicker bars) unis. Came to a total of $1331 which was a fair bit more than I was expecting (had been told by the 2IC that it would be about $800 and they'd call with a quote when the manager was back in the shop, spoke to the manager the following week about what specs I was after and he said they'd source the materials and call back with a quote, next thing it was finished...) BUT all told it does look like being a top quality shaft. In terms of quality and turnaround I'd be happy to recommend them but would suggest "firmly" requesting a quote prior to assembly to avoid any surprises...

Thanks mate will check it out. Carbon shaft was from Precision Shaft Technologies in the USA. Owner Mark has been very good about the whole thing, they fixed it the first time under warranty and have offered to do it again. Really though I think it is just a poor choice of tailshaft for a Z32. Heat is the enemy of the carbon shaft and let's face it Zeds make plenty... Especially pushing big HP through big dump pipes/exhaust/etc. Both times the failure has been under near identical circumstances ie driving all day in high ambient temps.

Any reccomendations as to where to get a tailshaft done in Sydney? The carbon shaft in my Z32 has failed (again). It seems that heat soak gets to it causing the bond between the yoke and the shaft to slip. Anyway, planning to get a chrome molly one made up. Are Sydney Driveline (http://www.sydneydriveline.com/) the guys to see? Any other suggestions? I just want to know that it will be straight and balanced and that they shop is using quality U joints... Thanks!

Hey that sounds good -might have to look into it! I prefer the thread insert to helicoil. Actually ended up using it where a helicoil had previously been used (not on a blind hole) and had somehow wound itself out the other side when removing the bolt. I didn't do the original repair so maybe it was a case of installation error. These guys look good too http://www.timesert.com/html/install.html#A but more tooling involved

Another one that's come in handy lately -self tapping thread inserts. Case hardened, Zinc plated steel. Very easy to use -the "kit" I bought from auto one had the insert threaded onto an M6 bolt, with a nut behind the insert. All you have to do is drill your guide hole, press the insert into the hole by applying pressure to the bolt and then wind the insert in using a 10mm spanner on the nut. Easy as and no special tools or kits required. Looks like champion do a range of them too http://championpartsonline.com.au/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=23679

Haha yeah the video is awesome! You're right about the bolt in the vid though, takes a little longer to get through higher tensile bolts. Ignore all the "self centering" blah blah blah sales stuff though, definately have to centre punch when working with anything hard.
-
I bought a set of these suckers the other day after I found a rounded out bolt (allen key type) working on the zed. Went to the local engineering store to buy an easy out and the guy talked me into grabbing one of these instead. Worked really well, very easy to use. About $20 for a single bit (rather than $25 for a set of easy outs) but worked really well and no damage to the tool. I'm wondering where they have been all my life...

So here's how things are moving along I managed to score another OEM bonnet in exchange for some spanner work, and dropped that off with Nat at Gladesville Auto Bodyworks. Here's how it sat back in Feb. Just the centre vent and louvre done. Nat cut the vent in and made up an alloy frame to support the opening. At this stage it's riveted together but will be TIG welded once we know it all fits etc. Rear vents are yet to be done but you can see it's starting to take shape. Fast forward to today and the rears have been done and it's ready for a test fit. I'm very happy with the work so far but unfortunately as you can see the bonnet doesn't quite close. The centre louvre is fouling on the front of the motor, so will need to be reshaped. At this stage the plan is to keep the opening/vent the same depth, but lift the louvre in and have it dovetail into the vent with a little more of a curve rather than in a straight line as it does now. So yeah slow going at the moment but I'm happy with the progress. Once we get a suitable fit everything can get welded up and "finished" ready for paint.

Hey guys, glad to see things went well today! Barring some personal misfortune (my fancy high output alternator that I only fit a week or so ago decided to give up the ghost an hour in...) we had a decent turn out and from all accounts a good time. Thanks again for your support, I really didn't expect this to take off on SAU like it has. Just goes to show what a top bunch of people we car nuts really are The post event thread on aus300 is here for anyone interested http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?p=1335696#post1335696

Cruise For A Cause, Sydney Fundraising Cruise Sunday 3Rd March
Rob260 replied to Rob260's topic in Events Archive
Hi Guys, Loftus may be a better meeting point and has been suggested elsewhere. The only hesitation there is last time a member (on AUS site) planned a cruise meetup there it turned out to be some kind of sports day and the carpark was packed! I'm not sure if there will be any events on for a Sunday in March? I have tried to find out if it will be footy season etc but haven't had much success... Not sure how many cars to expect? Responses so far indicate roughly 20, but hey I'm willing to be pleasantly surprised -

Quite possibly, I don't think many of us have thought past this initial hurdle at this stage... At the moment we're aiming to get concurrent cruises up and running in all states. Provided it goes well, and people are around to keep running it, I don't see why this could happen annually. -
Cruise For A Cause, Sydney Fundraising Cruise Sunday 3Rd March

Thanks for the responses guys! Re a Southern Meeting Point for those wishing to join the cruise: one of the guys on our forum has suggested a vehicle inspection area on the southbound side of the Princes Hwy just before Waterfall Station. The pic below shows this area in relation to the station. Assuming we leave Blues Point on time we should arrive at Waterfall at approximately 11:00am. Allowing for late arrivals/holdups along the way I suggest we aim to leave Waterfall by 11:30, so anyone aiming to meet us there should aim to arrive at 11:00 for an 11:30 departure. We probably don't need a half hour window but it allows some wriggle room should things not go to plan and let's face it, driving through Sydney on a Sunday morning there are PLENTY of opportunities for traffic etc to go against us... Details for BBQ/Picnic Venue Information about Bonnie Vale can be found here http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/NationalParks/parkCamping.aspx?id=N0030#BonnieValecampground at the National Parks and Wildlife website. I expect we will arrive there between 12:45 and 1:00pm should anyone wish to meet there. Another member from the AUS300 site is organising BBQ supplies. Instructions for getting there (copied from the link above) as follows: "Bonnie Vale campground is located on Sea Breeze Lane, Bundeena, in Royal National Park. On entering the park at Loftus, drive 25km from the entrance towards Bundeena. Travel along Bundeena Drive and turn left onto Sea Breeze Lane. For backpack campers it’s possible to take the ferry from Cronulla and arrive on foot via a 15 minute walk from Bundeena wharf" Please note those on the cruise will be taking a slightly different route as we will be entering via the south side of the park. Updated Map I have updated the Google Maps plan to include the stop at Waterfall, updated map can be found here http://goo.gl/maps/QlJpL Donations: I will be collecting donations at the cruise, but for anyone who cannot attend but would still like to contribute, your (very much appreciated!) donations can be made either to the bank account or paypal address below PayPal: [email protected] BSB: 484-799 A/C No: 053072134 A/C Name: DRZED Again guys thanks for the support so far, it is truly appreciated.
