Hey all, I thought I'd come back to this thread first and tell you all that I've had to convert my project back to factory twin turbo setup from a GT35r. It was a very hard decision for me and here were a couple of reasons for this including me running out of money and also insurance problems lol so yeh, I will do a proper post in the selling section on SAU I guess. (I haven't tried selling on here before so am a bit unsure) I'll get up some photos too. Manifold and turbo, brand new, no more than 350-400km on it - don't laugh lol - it's been in the workshop more than at my place! One of the guy on here mentioned a while back that he wouldn't mind seeing how a .63 exhaust housing performs as most the guys run the .82 rear end and yeh, it comes on hard at around 3800-4000 on a bog stock engine running splitfires, E11v2 and a 044. I had it dialed in at about 13 pounds from memory and it came on with a nice thump....a fair bit earlier than the 0.82 housing which I also ran before downsizing (for those who recall my posts in this thread). So yeh, hope to post a proper thread up in the for sale section tomorrow ;-)

Another "won't Start" Thread

Hey did you end up fixing your problem because now I have the same thing with my R33 GTR. From one second to the next - was going to drive home from work and nothing. Same fuses as yours cone....lights come on, no dash lights but. Was it your barrel? Thanks -
You just want more car p0rn

LOL I knew you'd say that. Well, the first part of the video is just the exhaust in idle in the garage and like I said earlier, it still sounds half decent under around 1500rpm or so. I used my own shitty camera for this so it didn't pick up the droning part of the movie as well as I hoped. It's hard to explain really and it would be so much easier if you one could just go for a spin ;-) By the way, when there's no load on the engine and you free-spin it up to like 3000 or so like I did in the video it won't drone....it's only when I'm driving and when the engine is at work that it drones its head off (Did you watch the driving bit in the movie?) Nope it's that "gurgle" sound that I love - it's unique to the RB series engines and from it you can tell there's a Skyline nearby In my first video where I'm driving to the pits you can hear the sound there and it would continue like this all the way through the rev range...it was music! In the clip you'll notice that it no longer does the "gurgling" during normal cruising like it used to with the twins. But yeh, to anyone else reading this - don't get me wrong - it's not a bad thing.....I'm just hoping that someone who's noticed exactly the same thing may have done something with their exhaust to minimize the drone and bring out some of that old sound when driving etc. Please check out my two comparsion videos put up just for this thread/question: Sound after twins were replaced with GT35r (please watch this one all the way through)
-
Here's the footage of the drone. Excuse the camera - I guess you really gotta be there to hear it. But yeh, it's probably most noticeable if you watch both the videos.
-
If it was just a different note then that would be OK....but in my case it not only has a different note but it has quite some drone to it. Oh yeh, that's true - the more HP the less they sound like what they did with just factory type power. Yep, that supra idles nothing like the normal ones hehe....but then that ain't quite a supra anymore! It's more like 10 supras in 1 lol! I went for a little spin around the block before and got a dose of drone on camera....just waiting for the video to become active. Will post the link when it's good to go. You'll have to watch it straight after you watch my other one - quite a difference!
-
It did have a nice ring to it hey? Now you know why I posted....because with my turbo conversion that all disappeared. I guess it's a matter of opinion too: ...some people care only about getting from point A to point B. Then you got those who only care about the look and sound of their car....you know, the all-show-no-go type. Then you go the opposite of that where people build brutal machines that set lap records and don't really mind what they look or sound like......and then finally, I guess you have my catagory - a slightly built up GTR for track and road use....nice looks and wanting nice sound too, so the whole thing really. But yeh I'll try to capture some "drone" ;-)
-
OK, I've posted up a video just for this thread! Listen to that rumble haha! Well, the rumble it had before the twin to single conversion. Now I just need to get some footage of the drone although you could just listen to one of those ricer boys with their milo tins ;-) Sounds just like it lol.
-
OK I might do that today if I have time...for now I might chop out a bit from my QR footage then you can see what she sounded like prior to the conversion. Wow man, 140DB! Sh|t that ain't bad!
-
Yeh you're right the GTST's and GTR's don't sound exactly the same. My first Skyline was a GTST of the same year and I must admit it did have quite a note before I got busted for it haha! Lets just say it took a lot of work to bring it under 90db again lol! Yeh I might even post up a vid of it hey? I got the old sound....just need to take some "footage" of the drone. There's no reputable tuners in my area ;-)
-
Yeh well stuff like this is hard to describe in words hey? Yep we've done the whole drive by thing and it doesn't sound like a liner anymore. Um I've only got videos from what it used to sound like but I haven't put these on youtube. The problem is that the drone sound is higher in pitch/frequency than that nice Skyline rumble and, as soon as you apply any form of muffling the rumble disappears leaving just the drone. I've done a lot of experimenting with this but unfortunately the "least-drony" combinations are also the loudest and would attract unwanted attention. So yeh, for now I'm stuck with it. Having it turn all drony after the conversion was just unexpected - that's all
-
Ah ok cool. Ha yeh, the new turbo is quite impressive and it comes on with a nice thump too. I'm happy with the conversion but am a little bit well, a little bit shitty about the exhaust note as it has lost that roar that the twin setup had. Yep, it sounds a bit like that Supra there...you can even here the drone in the video but it'd probably be a whole lot worse inside! I guess I'm being a bit picky. Sound is part of the package and before I had a nice note and also a half decide induction sound....now however I have an insane induction sound but my exhaust note has completely disappeared. Only under about 1500rpm does it still have it's original note - after that, the drone kicks in. 900rpm to 1500rpm - NICE 1500rpm to 5000rpm - OMG turn it off! 5000rpm to 8000rpm - no drone, pretty nice note and very loud induction. But how often do you drive in this range? I never suspected that it would become this dronie after the conversion hey. Nope it's just a normal housing. I nearly ended up getting a T04z and it would've had it, but the GT35 doesn't.
-
GT-R32, did you have the same problem that I'm having now? My problem is that even when I don't run a muffler at all it still drones. That's the wierd thing...I don't think I'll be able to control it with a muffler...it's more likely something along the pipe that I may have to do
-
Sorry but I think there may be a bit of confusion here. Let me clear it up... Bought GTR totally stock and had 3" system made up for it. The system is a no brand one...just 3in mild steel. Sounded and worked excellent!!! Now I have done a turbo conversion on it. Twins to single GT35r with .63 rear. Did not get new exhaust - just new dump pipe to suit the single Now the car has a totally different note. Drone. Sounds like a 4 cyl lancer/civic. No straight 6 sound. So, that's my problem... ...now, for what I have tried to do to fix it: 1. Try out some different mufflers - all sound the same only louder or quieter drone. 2. Try out no muffler at all - insanely loud and illegal. Put my muffler straight back in again. 3. Tried 4in resonator halfway along system + canon, still drony just quieter. So yeh....that's pretty much it, sorry for any confusion. eeiko321, what turbo setup do you run....is it still twins? Upgraded twins? ...or a single. I'd just like to find if anyone with a big single has managed to tweak their exhaust system as so to get rid of the drone. This is why I'm posting etc. ....hope this clears up some confusion ;-)
-
Hey, Well the funny thing is that it still sounds like that without a resonator or canon.....yes, I did go for a lap around the block like that and it was loud as hell but really awful! ....lets just say i was very quick to put all the gear back on ;-) Well I know what you mean as I previously had a GSTS and it sounded damn nice too. The exhaust system I got on my GTR now is the same as it was before when it had the twins on it only that now off course it has a single dump etc etc. So yeh I've definitely pinned it on the turbo just making it sound different. It'd be alright if it was just different, but the problem is that it sounds quite shit now. Infact, you wouldn't know that it's actually a straight 6 in there like you could before....you know how straight 6's in Skylines and VL's all make that unique sound......that's all gone now. Yep, she's a civic!!! LOL spot on! ....till the GT35 kicks in....then you hear nothing but the howl of that turbo lol. Just a pitty that it no longer has a note at the other end. Sound is part of the package for me.
-
Yep....I think that the note would be very closely related to the vein design on the exhaust wheel. I think it slightly scrambles the note and turns it into a boring drone that has given me a bit of a dull headache in the past. I'm sure there's people out there who know exactly what I mean lol!
-
Yeh well it's all in the veins of the exhaust wheel and so forth. I'm just trying to see what other people who've done the same thing make of it. The difference is definitely very noticeable that's for sure.
-
Well it's just that it sounds totally different now with the single on it compared to when it had the twin stockies. 3" stainless sump to a 3" high flow cat.....then out to a canon style muffler. I've been experimenting with different mid-way resonators. System was at legal DB with twins....now it's a bit louder and very drony with the single. I just want a nice note....nothing loud and crazy and annoying - just a nice note that one can enjoy and also hear thru the helmet at the track. So not too quiet - I've made that mistake before lol! Not good.
-
Hi all, I've been doing some reading on different types of exhaust system that people have been using on here and a couple have mentioned that there's is "zero drone" and so forth. So, I thought I'd post up my query on my setup. I'm running a single GT35 with a 0.63 rear housing and from day one have noticed that the single turbo produces a horrible drony exhaust note above 2000rpm. The nice pulses that were generated my the twin turbo setup are now gone and are replaced by a drone and something that sounds more like a 4 cylinder. I take it that the drone would be associated with the veins in the exhaust wheel? I've always been a great fan of the nice note that skylines put out but now it's pretty much vanished to a level where it's only evident at idle rpm. No more harmonic note....just a continuous drone like a lancer (no offence to lancer drivers) Any ideas? Or is this just what you get and are stuck with when you go for a single? Just thought I'd post it up and see if anyone else has had the same thoughts and maybe done some exhaust tweaks to get rid of the drone. Thanks

Hi all, I thought I'd come on here and ask a question or two about the Haltech boost control solenoid that can be run in conjunction with my E11v2. Over the past couple months I've been performing a turbo upgrade on my R33 GTR where I replaced the twin stock turbos with a single Garrett GT35 which first had a .82 rear end but now sports a .63 instead. Now, my problem is that on this new .63 housing my internal wastegate creeps open early and prevents the turbo from spooling up properly, instead, it spools up slowly and over the entire rev range.....so, less than ideal! My tuner recommends an Eboost but I know that you can also get the boost control solenoid from Haltech along with that little controller. Eboost ranges from anywhere between $450 to $750 while the Haltech unit is under $200! All I need is something that keeps the signal from the actuator and keeps that waste gate shut and then opens it at a desired level instead of it creeping open on it's own accord like it does now. I must add, that the turbo and the actuator are in brand new, perfect nick and I have some plots here of how the turbo boost graph looks like when the wastegate actuator has no signal to it at all....a very steep curve that comes on hard!!! (while now it's very linear). Could someone please advise on which way I should go to fix this? Turbosmarts Eboost....or, the cheaper Haltech solenoid? Obviously the eboost would fix the problem just like that along with opening up many avenues of further boost control....but can I achieve the same outcome with the Haltech unit controlled and programmed via the E11? Please advise.....any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

Haha I just want to get it going properly first! I know what you mean but and in that case I could always put the .82 rear back on. There's a lot of other stuff I have to do before I'd go for more power as I want to take it to more race outings. (brakes, cooling, suspension etc) My goal for now is no more than 400awhp which is plenty.....should see that after I get pump, injectors and cams but just for now, I'd settle for around 350awhp as that's probably getting quite close to the injector's limits! Would I be correct to assume that at around 480-500bhp one would be looking at getting the internals upgraded as well?
-
I had a GT35 with .82 rear on there before - so laggy! Now I have a GT35 with 0.63 rear....a bit better. Happy I didn't go with that T04z for my power goals - I don't think I can deal with something that spools up so late! GT35 is late enough when you compare it to the spool up time of the stock twin ceramics!
-
Ok, now the E11 is in and the brand new GT35 with .63 housing is also in. The only thing that's letting me down now is the coil packs which I'll replace soon with a set of Splitfires. I just had one question though, for those who are familiar with the E11's inner workings (which I am not). Could anyone please offer up advice on how to tune in the A/C idle up rpm's vs the AAC valve that physically puts up the revs. My tuner is having a bit of fun getting this tuned in although I'll check this again tomorrow. He says that there have been known issues with the link cables/interface connectors??? Could someone please shed some light on this? Cold start and additional rpm's for idle with a/c on are the only things that are being a bit problematic at the moment.

Anyways guys, this is what I ended up with when I had my GT3582 ordered through my mechanic from HP in a Box. Pretty nice hey....I like the whole new vein design on the exhaust wheel...it must give you at least eleventy-billion extra horses. This would explain why my GTR sounded uncannily like a lawnmower the milo tin at the back. A nice second hand, stuffed, ford xr6 cartridge hidden inside brand new covers and....the best thing.....I paid full price! Not bad hey....lol, I was running that for a couple weeks! Hopefully today some time I'll receive my new cartridge bundled with a smaller .63 housing. After $9240 of work, I have pretty much achieved as much as I would have if I bolted on a $25 bleed valve and cranked my stocko turbos up a little bit which, by the way, are in awesome condition. I've never seen turbos that are so old but in such good nick.
