  1. what sort of intake setup do you have ? Pod or panel filter ? FMIC ? what sort of pipes are you running? all of these things contribute to the sound your intake makes.... soooo it might sound different to others you've heard.. get a mate to record a video on a phone or something if you want us to give you a better guess.
  2. thats not a good noise.... sounds a lot like one of the pistons is slapping the wall....... very similar to how mine sounded before we pulled the motor apart and found a lot of bad :< you need to get this checked out by someone good asap.. fingers crossed for you bud, hope its just lifters.
  3. errm.. sounds like normal induction noise........
  4. Helllo so there are a few people who know my story, but to sum it up, i have an N1 block thats already at 87mm bore size (40 thou over). There is some damage to cylinder 1 and to reuse it, it would require re-boreing it out to 87.5 (60thou over). Ive been told by some people that this is a big no go, as the block gets too hot under load and will crack, however i've also been told that the HKS / Tomei stroker kits specify an 88mm bore to be used (80 thou over). Does anybody have any experience with boring out an N1 rb26 to this size ? Keep in mind, this will be used for a fair bit of track work. Any comments/feedback ?
  5. Thats Ben (Destero). I saw him as well. managed to catch up and have a chat before I had to run.
  6. there is a skyline crt in Burliegh Heads down here on the coast.
  7. devestated i cant be there.. this was going to be the highlight of my month. Once humpty is back together again, i'll be rearing and ready to go. Definately be there at the July day.
  8. avoid BWCP / Spit hotspots.. mostly full of BC kiddies anyway.. as well as being targetted by police. Keep an eye out for some of our GC meets. Dave (keeper), me, and a few others meet up for a cruises once in a while.... i'll be keen once my car is back on the road.
  9. ah ok. what do you think of the noise ?? The curious thing is that aside from the noise, the car seems to be driving fine (although ive stopped driving it now for fear of doing more damage). No flakes in the oil, no blow by, no white smoke..
  10. there is no bearing between the rod and the piston ?
  11. Right click -> Save Target As SAU has some wierd linking to AVI files.. so cant straight click it.
  12. new video.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRd5DGmGzpY OR http://users.bigpond.net.au/Strik3r/car_cold.avi after talking with people today and another chat with the mechanic, we think it might be a little end bearing.... any other ideas would be appreciated, else it looks like engine is being pulled down next week. sux2beme
  13. having said that, if it was a ring / skirting, the engine would be sending so much oil out the back i wouldn't be able to see the road behind me... I'll check the catch can when I get home. Any other ideas ?
  14. yea complete rebuilt motor. N1 block, extended sump, cp race pistons, tomei rods, poncams and lifters. I'm starting to think along your lines.. a ring or skirting causing 1 piston to slap like crazy... in which case i should probably not be driving until i can get a comp test done.. if the piston grabs it'll punch a hole in the block.
  15. So there is an audible rattle coming from my engine... fairly sure its coming from the block and not somewhere in the drive train. Current best guess diagnosis from my mechanic is its piston slap, probably due to the previous engine builder not setting the tolerances correctly on the rings. Am going to find out build specs tomorrow to try and confirm. It sounds a bit like a big end, but I dont think it is cause: a) it doesnt sound quite the same b) i've been driving with the rattle for around 3 weeks now with no noticed effects. c) engine doesn't seem to be using oil I have a couple of very poor quality recordings that you can listen to... the noise is the sharp rattle that you can hear clearest in the cold recording when i rev it.. its noticeable just before the 'vroom' comes. UPDATE: Video -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRd5DGmGzpY - slightly easier to hear.. http://users.bigpond.net.au/Strik3r/car_cold.mp3 http://users.bigpond.net.au/Strik3r/car.mp3 (once warm after 15 minute drive) I know its impossible to actually 100% work out whats wrong from that, but I'm just after some ideas that I can ask my mechanic to consider. The recordings were taken with my phone held about 20-30 cm from the engine block.. i'll try and take another recording tomorrow with the phone held a bit further away so you can hear a bit better. cheers Gervase
  16. Matt Spry - PITS - 0411 340 033. $200/hr RWD, $300 AWD Gavin Wood - Autotech - 07 5529 2313. $180/hr RWD, $280 AWD. recommend both. You will need to book at least a week or 2 in advance for either of them.
  17. if there is definately fuel, then its probably spark plugs or coil packs. are you waiting a few seconds before turning the key all the way to allow your fuel pump to prime ?
  18. very easy option would be to get a butterfly valve installed..... when putting around town, your effective exhaust size is about 2".. pull a lever, open up the valve and your straight back to 3.5" when you want to fang it (on the track of course). keep in mind, this is not a strictly legal option....
  19. correct me if i'm wrong, but the last time i was reading the noise rules, the rule was 90db @ half of the vehicles redline.. in a 33 that should be 3500... but that was for qld.. not sure if its different down in vic.
  20. i'd still say it'd be under 90db.. a 2ltr 6 with a 3" exhaust isn't gonna be making that much noise. once you have your exhaust reading, keep the report in your car in case you get pulled over again. Just remember, the way you act will more than likely determine the outcome in an encounter with the police.. many (though not all) police officers are reasonable people. My old car had a similar exhaust setup and was well under 90db, so fingers crossed you wont have a problem. gl !
  21. Spotted white 32 GTR - number plates GTR 19 on Bermuda street around 6.30pm last night. nice car
  22. this may also sound stupid, but it *could* be your AFM playing up.... What did datalogit say about AFM voltage at the times ? If your seeing really large spikes when you touch the throttle, could be AFM being stupid and causing the car to dump a tonne of fuel and subsequently missfire/die. Also check TPS & CAS ??
  23. Its worth spending a bit extra to know that the quality of work is good.. Take it to somewhere with a less savoury reputation and you will end up spending much more in the long run. I've always taken my cars to Gavin and will continue to do so.
  24. tee hee.. i think demon's run in tune is only about 250 kw atm (i think he said 350awhp)... we had a little run next to each other, but i cant be sure that he was trying ive still only been using ~15psi.. car is fast enough.. scary to think what 21 psi would do
