Valve Stem Seals Or Turbo? Help A Canadian
Paradis v.1 replied to Paradis v.1's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
^^ haha, nice! Me not so much. Turns out mine looks to be a valve seal issue after all. I did see a reduction in the severity and frequency of my blue puffing, so it appears my ventilation set up was adding to the issue, but i am still seeing a little bit of oil love smoking in the first few minutes before my engine heats up and expands to have the valves sit tighter. Oh well. I have an extra head that i may plug away at and fix up and fit it on later this summer. May as well grab a better headgasket as well as i should have one while i'm running 18-19 psi -

Engine related? do you mean thats what you were thinking before you tried the pcv valve trick? Regadless good to see we talked each other through this Ya, i'm starting allow myself to get excited. i still don't understand from a mechanical stand point, but whatever. I'm sure i've seen a little puff or two, but nothing even remotely close to what i was seeing. Could be that my valve seals were going in combination with the pcv valve issue. we'll see -

^^^ any news from you? Nothing conclusive from my end. I still think i'm seeing/smelling some wafts, but no doubt there's been a massive difference since venting to ATM -
hah, indeed. but it does the trick. Go before show in my books

Valve Stem Seals Or Turbo? Help A Canadian

Yah, that sounds alot more like mine. Kind of unpredictable beyond the fact it's usually once i start driving after a couple mins, and then it teeters off the longer i drive. Are you sure its throttle dependent? Try in your first couple mins driving, down shifting a ways away from a stop and then when you get there, through into neutral so you're suddenly going into vac and tell me what you see. also for the sake of curiosity, vent your crankcase to ATM just for an hour so it's not going into your inlet and tell me what you see -
ya, the guy was planning to do a line of them in canada, built many off the model of his couple, but then his business went to hell, lost interest, etc etc. so i got it for a great deal. looks very boxy and odd though

hah, you guys should see the monstrosity i'm rocking in my hcr32.. it was custom built and apparently engineered using some air dynamics program and trumpeting inside (i don't know if i believe them a 100%) but regardless, its massive, i got rid of a ton of piping and i've got tons of torque and low end comparatively speaking. besides, its an rb20. Truly a monstrosity though..

hah... and as i finish typing that and drive to the store, i'm greeted by my little blue friend. it wasn't for more than a second or so and it was small but thats exactly why i said i'm still holding my breath. I'll be convinced when i have a +week of clean exhaust. -
Valve Stem Seals Or Turbo? Help A Canadian
Paradis v.1 replied to Paradis v.1's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Wait a minute, i'm not quite getting it, the changes in pressure part that is. The stock set up has the PCV working at idle and vac, but the by pass inlet route is there for when you're under boost. Now plenty of ppl go to catch cans and elminate the PCV altogether. But the turbo inlet route is still present in some set ups. ^^^^ Now, i don't have a stock plenum anymore, i've been running a custom side feed for sometime, and the PCV has been eliminated from the system a long time ago (about as long as i've had this issue oddly enough) but the venting has always been kept to the inlet. Now, under boost, there's no difference right? as it would be going that way anyways... However under idle its being sent through there as opposed to the PCV. I don't understand how going through the PCV would eliminate oil showing up in my exhaust. there's no device or trick in the PCV that would collect the oil that i've been seeing. To summarize, I'm not getting how the PCV is changing the content of the air. Ya sure pressure, boost, vac strength etc etc. But essentially the content of the air (oil, gas, whatever) isn't being altered by going through your inlet or your PCV right? It still ends up being burnt off. I don't know if this is like my issue, could be something more serious if your smoke is that closely linked to your throttle. Mine had nothing to do with boost or throttle, just went i was under 0psi or under vac is when i would see it. Is there blue smoke when you start up, or do you have to start driving? Take off your hot pipe and your inlet and see if there's alot of oil there. If you can manager it, take off your down pipe and have a look at the back of your turbo. Do a quick compression test and see where you're at. If you smoking issue are related to you're throttle, as in when you step into it you see smoke, then could be your turbo. or engine. If you think it's valve seals then from what i gather, its related to burning off primarily in the first few mins of driving, and a hot engine will have parts expand and the seal will be better than when it's cold. A test someone told me about was to get up to a high speed in a high (like highway speeds) let off the throttle and let it wind down, then give step into it and watch for a poof out of our mirror. If you want to know if it's your PCV just out of curiosity, block off the hose going to your PCV, and block off your inlet hose on the other end. Vent your valve covers to ATM just as a test and see if you're still seeing it. -

so I finally went for a good rip again tonight (been crappy outside the last 2 days) and thats now 3 times in a row driving with no oil puffing after changed my vent so that it wasn't going directly into my inlet anymore. (my pcv has been blocked off for some time). So i'm a little stunned as to how that's eliminated the problem... I'm still holding my breath. I think when it warms up in a couple days i'll see dfferent results. chilly chilly out tonight. i was boosting 20 psi, woohoo, -

pressure blow back? like how? Rings aren't the issue, my leakdown and compression tests were strong and clear so i'm going to assume thats not the issue -

well not that it really means anything, but i had my pcv blocked off and it was venting only into my air inlet after the maf, so i just put it out to ATM for the sake of curiousity and i didn't see any more puffing.. bizarre. it shouldn't matter as i'm not seeing smoke on boost, but i still don't think it cleared it up. i just think my car was being nice to me today. the puffing will back i'm sure and i'm ready to declare valve seals at this point -

Well I'll have another quick gander this afternoon at my PCV vavle and the front side of my turbo while i'm at it. I know the timing of the oil being burnt is valve like (under vac) but there engine being cold has no bearing on the smoke showing up, and there's nothing at start up, which i thought you should see some if it is valve seals. ..Two engines with worn valves is bad luck, but it's almost uncanny to have a motor replicate the symptoms as soon as i swapped it in. I've learned that sometimes you can overanalyze the situation, looking for the most bizarre problems when they aren't there. I was convinced once that i was hydro-locking the engine after some work i did, when it turn my stinking red top battery just wasn't holding a big enough charge anymore. Something about this just smells wrong, literally. Lol. I suddenly like my Hi-Flow turbo is acting a fool and i'm going to investigate -

Interested in the turbo and of course willing to pay shipping. PM me and we'll talk. I'm not as savy minded about garrett turbos, i've been running a hi-flow neo so i'd need to talk about what i need to make it run. thanks, -Chris -

i'm interested, but 60K is alot to be running 18psi at. can you give me some kind of reassurance? -
Hi, i had another thread about my issue of puffing some smoke but it's garnering alot of interest. I thought my issue might be seals, but i'm starting to consider my turbo being the problem. its hi-flo neo 25 turbo. Just wondering if anyone by chance has ever had a situation where their oil return line was kinked or just plain was functioning. what are the symptoms of that, is it possibly to get periodical burning oil, perticularly at idle when stopping at lights?

i just noticed this. ya you can, but of course you need the elbow, but you also need to do something about the oil feed lines. i think it needs a restrictor. i can't remember off the top of my head but i know i had to modify it
