Hey guys, I have owned the GTR for about 2 years now and have blow 2 lots of turbos in that time. Being a poor bastard and liking the stock power I replaced them with stock ones again. That was all fine and dandy makeing about 0.9 Bar boost all day every day. The car is completly stock engine wise. Basic support mods include HKS Intercooler, HKS Exhuast and HKS BOV. Stock ECU, Injectors ect Now heres my problem. I have been using it as my dayly driver for abit now giving it a fairly easy life putting around in traffic. Now all of a sudden it doesn't like to boost pass 0.6 bar and blows a f**k load of smoke out the back. Missfires and doesn't go very fast. The car still revs to 7.5k, idles fine, builds boost quickly as well. Smokey ilde sometimes. I have checked the following - Blocked BOV - Didnt notice and different Checked all pipping - intercooler hoses and fuel lines - all ok here Reset ECU - no change Checked for shity fuel with water in it. Flushed tank - still the same Going to do a compression test this weekend will report back with what i find, the problem is i have done alot of research and it points to a leaking intercooler pipe. Checked all the piping a million times now and still nothing comes up. I also can't take it to a machinic because i live in a small rural town full of FORDs and Holdens and the mechs scratch there heads with my car. My last resort will be chucking it in the back or a trailer and taking it to HyperDrive MS. Cheers,

Same thing happens on my R32 GTR when traveling long distances on boost. I think it is a safety feature of some sort to stop it for over heating. -
You really should of checked the turbos while you were there BUT those turbos are the same as the one i'm getting next tax check... I would recomend a ecu of some sort becasue you will run into problem if you up the boost. You don't wont' to be leaning out do you?

Yep and just spray water around the pipes so you can actuly here it.

Good Luck with it all. When I replaced most of my hoses i gained about 2-3psi. Made boost quicker and pulled harder. Don't forget to come back and finish the post for future readers!

Just take the front bar off. Easy as 10min job. I was a bit silly going all that way to the turbos not to spin them!

To check the blow off values just put a metal sheet where the blow off values connects to the pipe. So basicly blocking off the blow off value. Did you check the exhaust wheel? Did you spin the turbo wheel and did it spin nicely? When i lost a exhaust wheel i didnt' here anything but i lost ALL boost. So my problem is slightly different. Just one more time though, have you checked all the pipes? I had alot of oil in the rear turbo but i think it's because i don't a have a catch can.

Something simular happened to me. Things to check, CAT to see if is blocked Wastegates to see if there are stuck While checking out your cat look for tiny bits of exhuats wheel Check all pipping to and from the turbos Check all intake pipping as well That pretty much covered it. If you fined you have a blown turbo i have a spare one here. I pray for you it isn't a turbo. To check for leaks just get some "start you bastered" and spay it all over the pipes and listen to the engine if it rises you have found your leak! Good luck with it all.

I did a dyno run and got 201 with winding out 4 and hitting the 180 limit. Theres the video!

Sorry if i didn't believe you guys way back on page1 but it is alot easier to remove your cat then to remove your turbo.... It's not making more boost becasue it's still making 0.8bar. Just feels alot more boost but not. Thanks guys.

UPDATE TIME Finsihed putting the new turbos on. Thanks Hyperdrive Motorsport f**king legends! BOY O BOY the difference the new turbos make. The old ones must of been f**ked or piping isusses? Anyways did some upgrading of the old clamps, bolts, gaskets,nuts ect and the differnce is F**CKING AWESOME. Spool time is nearly instant and power pulls something curl! Another thing is i can here the blow off values heaps more now. Whats the go?

How do the wheel get sucked back though. It's a totaly differnet part of the turbo? I mean if it did break wouldn't it just go thought the exhuast?

Shit hey 240? I allways get ripped off. All well. UPDATE TIME: Taken BOTH turbos out and to BUST all your bubbles it was the rear turbo. The exhaust wheel have come off and logded it self in the turbo. The front wheel wasn't turning nor was the rear. The shaft in the middle was snapped. Pretty f**ked up hey! PICS come tomorrow. Such a relief that it was the turbos because i got abit worryed when everybody thinks it's something else. The wastegates were fine. Everything was fine. No leaks in the system no leaks in the BOV's. It was that turbo shaft that was f**ked. All well. Now it's time for the INSTALL. Probly going to take as long if not longer. So far it's taken 7 hours to take them out...

They were both sucking and blowing swaping even? Very strange. I did do the Start you bastard trick with no success. That is what i meant by checking the pipes sorry. The way i think of it is if the turbos are fine or f**ked i have a spare set to build up or sell. Im going to try the f**kanics and put air though the system. The turbos are nearly out now, just got to remove the dump pipe so i can have a look. All in all i don't think it's a big deal doing the turbos, i get to learn a f**k load and have in the progess. Now to finish it for the Show and Shine on sunday

OK guys I have biten the bullet and brought some secound hand turbos to replace the ones in there. I will be ripping every thing out and QUAD checking everything! I pick up second hand 32 GTR turbos for 450 bucks. Is that a good price?

Ok update time. The car has been in bits looking for this leak(s). Deciced to put the cat back on and saw that it was really blocked up and black. I held it up to the sun and all i could see was a hole the size of a HJ's Straw! So i brought a new one Heaps of NA power but still no boost. Revs alot harder and pulls a little bit better but still no boost. I was waiting in the drive though of Red rooster and it was having trouble IDLING and nearly stalling. Boost gauge was going all over the place. Keep smelling fuel all the time and blowing HEAPS of black smoke. Driving home the car acted normal as well. Still no boost. I can here a hissing sound ner the dump pipes, but not in the engine bay. Question Time: If one of the turbos breaks a exhaust wheel off can the other still make boost? Like instead of make 0.8 bar it will make 0.4 becuase one making the boost not booth? I don't have the money for replacement turbos so if i continue to drive the car will the engine suffer? Do i risk anything. I drive 300km a week, and get paid monthly so it's going to be hard. Is there a garret drop in replacement that is as reponsive as the stock ones. Instead of buying the garrets/HKS would it be wise to rebuild the current ones with steel wheels. I'm chassing a reliable 300kw ATW Thanks again for the help you guys have been awesome!

I'm trying to get my head around this whole situation. Turbos are fine? Pipes are fine from the turbos? It's whats controling the boost. I have no boost controler. So it's a VAC leak somewere. Do they normaly make a sucking noise? Any BIG clues i should look for?

I will show you a pic of the pipe i replace because i can't get to my till this arvo How do i check if one of the turbos is gone? Without taking the dump pipes off or engine out. I live in Western Australia, Geraldton population of about 10 000. No one he knows about skylines/GTR. When i took it to a mechanic i overherd one of the blokes say "they like a SS just put the same shit in". He was talking about the oil..... I have taken both pipes off and i can feel it sucking real good. The boost gaugealways goes out of negative psi and holds at 0 psi.

Shit. I have been driving quite sedatly but i have just wound out a gear to go fast. Hmm. I think I have done that about twice.
