How Do You Check The Health Of Your Coil Packs ?
Richieb replied to Munkyb0y's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
For sure, any big deviation is a problem, I think I would bin them if they exceeded 8.5 Ohm on the primary side, or less than 0.055.( personal limits I have set, and noted through my time with spark problems btw) You might find that the spark has actually arced through, as opposed to over the surface of the coil plastic, which is what foxed me at first, as I could see no outwardly visible sign of the tell-tale hairline mark, because it had gone actually through the insulator. I have the offending item on my desk here, as a symbol of triumph!! I reakon that(IMO) if the plug contact has a "Arced/eroded/blackened appearance, it will have been strained to jump 2 gaps in the time of spark to that plug, as one is under pressure, and one is not (two totally diff mediums) then there is a good bet that the spark will have attempted to break-down another way to ground, (sometimes via secondary windings to a easier exit!!)and probably will have signed the death warrant of the coil in question. You could do the ME trick, and for $50, I solved it all by substitution.(certainly beat the $1k I was quoted) BTW, I am not suggesting in anyway that new ones are not a viable remedy, it's just I have salvaged my ignition system for a miniscule cost. I WAS going to go for the JJR, or a MSD system with external Hi-Energy coils, but I had a few hrs spare, and threw caution to the wind, so hopped in the run-about, and tracked some down. he let me chose which one I wanted, with a guarantee(which is nice!!) I will, and do still buy from SA's sponsors, and recommend them fully, there's some good prices from them, and some quality equipment to boot. -
Have to agree. The Police officer will hear, and deduce that this is easy pickings for a defect slip. Can you disguise it by placing pipe over the outside of the valve, and then routing it to somewhere where it can vent without shouting ATTENTION "Give me a defect slip"? I was out and about last weekend, and the amount of BOV's I heard was incredible, and the cops were picking them off like flies. IMO, ...if you give the law an excuse to pull you over, then they will do... it all makes good law enforcement logic... get the ones that stand-out first, 'cos it's a safe bet that they are less than standard. I am not entirely familiar with the full scope of the law here as yet, but most authorities need a reason the pull you, as opposed to pure "victimisation". After all, their job is to make the best of an awkward job, without being seemingly too heavy handed. BUT !!!, If that's how you want to customise your ride, then go for it, enjoy the pleasures mate. It's all part of individuality, which is commendable. It's what makes us human. Good on yer. IMO..!!, sorry, had to chip-in here.

How Do You Check The Health Of Your Coil Packs ?
Richieb replied to Munkyb0y's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
From what I know, they should read about 0.7 ohms(primary). Secondary is the doubtful one though. I dont have a real way to test this, but I know you should get a big phat blue spark from it if you connect a plug on it to ground. If not blue and seemingly powerful, then it is dodgy. There is, according to what I know only one way to test its output, and that is complex, as the requirement is pressure in the same confined area, plus a guage sensitive enough to measure in KV. If in doubt, go buy a single one from a breakers like I did.( I found a late model GTR in a breakers in Greenacre, and they will split individually) If you carefully remove the silicone rubber plug part, you will see that there are one of two things in there, dependant upon vintage. I have noted that if you look at the top of the spark plug, and find it has been blackened by spark arcing, then you probably will have a duff coil, as the spark will try to find a quicker route to ground, and very quickly will create it's own Freeway to Ground, which you cannot remove reliably(learned this from working on 33Kv 330Amp systems) This "Quicker route" has been noted by myself in this instance to be INSIDE the bakellite/plastic former. I sanded (what i had ascertained was the duff item) the surface off the plastic, and discovered it had 'Tracked' through, thus being hidden away from the usual way of spotting it!! I opened all the spark plug channels, and discovered that the spring, or spring and carbon rod had shortened itself in a few instances. I gently took each one out, and carefully stretched the spring/carbon contacts to all the same length of protrusion from the contact in the HT side, cleaned them all with isopropyl alcohol, dried them, and then reassembled them... plus I did the same with the replacement item!! I had a problem with my ignition, which turned out to be one coil, and I believe(IMO) that the orig Nissan items are just as good/if not better than the after-market devices on sale, short-fall of an external Hi-energy race coil setup. Anyway, the car was duly tested, and BINGO, all is good for the princly sum of $50. I am not a tight-wad, but if I can work-out that only one coil was stuffed, then why pay upwards of $500 when the reast are in perfect working order... even after almost 18 years!. I have spent $13k nearly on my motor, and I decided there is a diff between being overley silly with my cash, and not. She now is back to 417Kw at the 4 wheels, running on good old trusty Nissan coils, and I have not noted any problems since. -
I got a good example, and I recommend it. mines 1989 too..!!! Buy any used car, and you have no idea about its history tbh. I think they were specialist cars in Japan, and were, as a whole looked after well..... just like we do..!! ... and of course, there the wheel-spinner owners who kick them about when they know it is sold too... beware of them. TBH, what can you expect, they are USED!!... buy new if it is a concern, but, as correctly re-itterated on here many times, take your time, but grab the one you want when it avails itself, and stick with it. YEAP, you need maintenance, but don't all cars..!?!? R32 is a legend, and quite rightly so, anything else is less.!!!, and still has to be equalled..!! IMO..!!!, any questions or advice, this is the place. BTW... I would not swap it for any car at the moment, its superb in all aspects, a true drivers car, and you dont have to cane it everywhere either, peeps kno what they are, so no need to affirm the "crown". Yep, she has cost me some dough, but now I know what is good, and what is "iffy". Having done most of the work, I have a good idea of it's condition, and what is next on the TTD list. There are some real sheds on the market, but my advice is try to get one that looks relatively standard, and no "salon sillies" in it. Performance.. I have managed amazing power, whilst keeping it looking standard. They are a very robust item if looked after. My 2cents.

Massive Miss Fire Along With A Few Other Issues
Richieb replied to nisskid's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I gonna get the JJR coils in mine when I get time..! They did specify 10% more spark voltage, so it has to be worth a try, even if they live for 2-3 years. I cant see any lightning show either, but we are sure its the coils breaking down. they do arc inside as well, so you may not see any external indications of problems. I was running 22psi, but even on 14, it spits and f@rts now. What ever happens inside them, it just gets worse as time goes on. -
B@stards. I will keep eye on road, and on grape-vine too. Will chat to Tuners and Garages I know too. For sure, on diff plates, or in pieces by now tho. Are there any distinguishable features on it, or inside... or even special goodies? Usually when you have one, they tend to chat to you more, so I will be alert, but get pics if I think it could be. Better a few pics tho, so we can make a good ID on it. Good luck on recovery if poss.. I hope they try to take mine, they gonna get a HUGE suprise if they do.. hehehe!!

Sooo true, I need to remove my lead boots for a while..!! (they're taking all my fun things awaaaaay..!!) I was at the Dyno having it re-mapped etc, and they noted the same mis-fire as I did prior to me carrying out the work done. It was ordained that it wasn't mis-firing at 14 PSI, so the limit was set to that, but, it would seem that is is getting worse... on a large scale!!. One thing I do know is that it is getting progressively worse for sure, it is just happening all soooo fast, it's got me concerned, and Mr Dyno too. I suppose if it is the insulation around the coil/s breaking down or arc burning, then it will show the symptoms I have, but I am concerned about the F pump noise, as it dont sound quite right to me, but then again, there may be someone who has seen this one before also. Does anyone know how you can test coils, apart from the obvious?, it's just its all happening too fast, and all of a sudden if you know what I mean. (says the man who just spent $11k on it as of last month). Only trouble is, I have to switch out the turbos as far as I can, until I get chance to get it sorted out, only there is, according to what I am told, waste-gate pressure still being developed, and I hope this isn't gonna cause me prob's in the journey to Mr Dyno. Yeah, I know, I gotta do the Sunday driver act, .... and get hogged by the trucks... its just the road I have to go down is a mad place at any time. But, yeap, ur smack-on, keep the load off her for now. Even tho the temptation is to apply a little "Happy-Pedal" just to confirm it is still not running right. So....., I have her chained up in the garage for now!!.

Ok, points taken, but I am not sure if I know you, but surely a little respect is due, as I don't intend to retort in a similar manner. I am actually quite correct in the part about catching you with one etc... surely you must agree there? Next part is also correct... "they are not completely contraband" It has saved my rear a few times is also fact. Money outlaid against possible large fines and court costs is also a fact, ....it is less. I am sorry, but I cant agree with you, they are all facts, and true. !!! As far as I understand, this area/forum is like many others, it is a place for discussion, and ideas, and nothing is ever "cast in stone here" My guess is that all, or shall we say, nearly all writings herein are experiences we have endured, and proferring this to like-minded adults is all part of the community. I never stated I was the Authority on this matter at any point you must understand. You will find in life there are many opinions, and one does have to sort out the "Corn from the Chaff". NO matter what is written in this forum, or any other for that matter, and none is likely to be any firm basis, legally or otherwise, to be 100% accurate, and one must also understand this. To quote my ramblings, or any other ramblings as suitable defence in a court of law is merely futile in my estimation. Yeah, I do believe in facts, but I do not think your retort was justified. There is more than one way to reply without being offensive, especially when we are strangers. I suggest you take a good read through many forums, and take note of what is 100% un-disputable fact, and what is not. Look, I am not having a pop here, but I don't really appreciate the reply, one could have been more articulate,.. adult forum or not. I believe there are a few paragraphs written to all at the opening pages, and I agree that if one cant be friendly, then best not to say too much. I regularly read this forum, along with many others, and there can quite a few mis-leading entries, but I don't jump in feet first. If my opinion and experiences offend you, then I appologise, but that is as far as it goes. This forum is a mine of knowledge, and I enjoy reading through it, whether it be absolute jibberish or not.

Ya could be right here, I have this feelin' that it isn't all coil related. Time for more research methinx. I took her over to Eastern Creek and around the city on Sunday last, and by the time I got to Bankstown from E Creek, it was missing like hell. I opened her up at one point(to give a WRX a spnking), only to be hit with a massive session of mis-firing. I got home, and as I parked her up, I heard the Fuel pump not making the normal buzzin noize, it appeared to be rising and falling(as such). And to hell with the expensive sparkies. In less than 1000Km I have had them changed twice..!!! Kinda saves a bit of tuning finance..!
-
Or Mine... already pumpin out 500+. Mee Precioussssssss. Good move man, serious car, for seroius driving.
-
Good move, ya needs 4WD to put the power down.
-
BTW, the flat spot on mine is at 5500 RPM. @14, 18 & 22 PSI (not using any more than 14PSI at the moment BTW!)... Kinda wrecked the 24PSI attempt for me that day!! Mr Dyno said it was the coils, but I noticed a noisy Fuel Pump on Sunday eve, and someone said if it had been run dry, then it could have been damaged(it's about 250Km old now). My thoughts are, if it was noisy, and a wavering noise was coming from it, there could be a problem, but the Dyno never picked up a lean situation, or any fuelling problem. I am going to try the ones that Just Jap sell... the ones with 10% extra voltage. Seem a better price, and offer more spark too, I'll update when done.

I was talking to a mechanic the other day, and he said you are better with "Normal" plugs. We were discussing a similar problem with my drive at the time. His opinion was that the Platinum ones, once they get a kicking, dont seem to recover, and need changing again... !!! Makes me wonder why I am using them. at the price they are?!? Now I am confused?!?!...., I thought they were the dogs goodies, but now... Anyone else know better, and can substanciate it?, 'cos I'd love to know which way to go.!
-
Seems you need to take a leaf out of your own book... READ what I said!! -----> "" QUOTE; "They arn't contraband altogether, " <--- emphasis on the wording..!! I HAVE BEEN STOPPED, AND I HAVE STILL GOT IT... In any case, use your judgement is my advice. We are all posting out opinions, I can't quote the law, because from what I gather, it is a bit of a grey area .... I am told.! BTW... My scribblings were personal experience, and are my opinion, please direct you extraordinary command of written english more articulately.... ...... think carefully before you consider the use of expletives, this is a forum of opinions and ideas only. A place where like minded, or similar people can have "friendly" banter, or merely procure advice or assistance.

Am looking to furnish my arsenal of automotive diagnostic equipment. I am not looking to buy new, as needs must. Anyone got anything out there unwanted etc?
-
Mate, I got a device similar to this, and it's saved my ass more than once already. Remember they have to catch you with it on the dash, powered up. They arn't contraband altogether, but the cash and points they save are more than the outlay for sure.
-
Fuel pump not cutting it, as in no pressure, or Coil-pack problem.

Hmmm. Which so called tuner was this?

Ok, ...... What Engine is it? What mods have been done to the motor? When they installed it, did they adjust the PFC to suit? With the motor NOT running, what does the "Sensor" page on the PFC commander say it is reading? What is the last number on the orange/red sticker read, it should start with a "J"? You have to remember there is a WHOLE LOT of adjustments to be made to the PFC when you change from standard to the Z32. It isn't just a "Bolt-On instant power device".

What is the last number on the sticker on the MAF, is it J70, cos they are std ones?
