  1. If my engine was erratically revving to 10k I would be more worries about finding the ignition to kill it than looking at the tacho...
  2. Picked up an N42 head today off of a 280ZX from Blacktown Wreckers for $120. Seems to be in good nick, no out of the ordinary burn marks or discolouration anywhere. Now it's down to the machinist to test it and give it a grind. Not going to take any more off than necessary to clean the face up. If I want to give it more stomp later, I'll strap a 68deg cam to it or something down the track. But for now, stock. All I need is to get to work and back smoothly without the cloud of smoke following me up and down the mountain.

There are plenty of black R30s. Also, going by the pics, it is by no means in perfect condition. 136,000km, sure, I'll buy that, Highly possible it's been around the clock at least once, but I'll take 136,000 at face value. You are not, I repeat NOT going to get more than $1000 for this car, and if you do, I will eat my words. I paid $6k for a HR31 GTS Coupe (Low volume Import) with R32 RB20DET, R33 turbo, R33 box, 2-way mechanical LSD, a whole heap of other mods, and in a darn sight better condition than your 30 is. The locally delivered MR30 is not a very highly sought after car at all, the JDM DR and HR30s on the other hand, if in pristine original or very highly modified (read: race car) form, may occasionally go for somewhere close to what you are asking, but only in extremely special cases. - guska2776

  8. Correct, RB30s are coil and dizzy ignition, not coil packs. He's asking about an RB20DET.
  9. Cheers, would I follow that exact procedure for reusing old bolts? Or is that to stretch new ones? I would be thinking that I would follow that procedure so that the head is perfectly flat yeah? Fisrt time actually doing a head on my own, so I want to make sure I got everything sussed out. Done a few as an assistant, but never on my own. The 30 is the practise pig before I do any major work on the 31.

  11. I thought you couldn't reuse head bolts, as they stretch or whatever when they are put in? Speakig of which, what tension do I put on them? Just trying to get all my info sorted before I start rooting around.
  12. Never blown a head or gasket before, so i have no idea. Now I am having trouble conjuring up a set of head bolts. Can only get the short ones genuine, and can't seem to find any at all aftermarket, even rang GEM Engines. Looks like it's off to the import spares mobs I go.
  13. http://www.hitman.hm/emissions.htm Hitman in Penrith will tune you for emissions and present the car for you. It's expensive, but basically, you drop the car off, come back in a few days, had them your money, and take you car and emissions pass slip. Then go and get it retuned...
  14. I am going to grab whatever I can find in the yard at Pick and Pay Less. How do I know what head is what? Would I be better off trying to find a 280ZX in there and nab the head from that? I have no idea about these engines, seriously.
  15. it's not for cleaning it up, it's for increasing the compression. So 0.040 will be doable but a bit extreme?

  17. Unplug the redtop packs, pull them out, put the 32 pack in, plug them in, easy. AFAIK, it's the same with 33 and 34 ones as well, as my mate has RB26DETT ones in his worked CA18DET as he kept popping CA ones.
  18. I am going to have an apprentice engine reconditioner mate give the head a haircut anyway, so initial compression isn't *REALLY* an issue. Another quick Q How much can generally safely be shaved off of an L24E head? I was thinking 30 thou or so, but my mate wants to take around 40 thou off it. I want to be able to run stock cams and ECU, and 95 octane at a minimum (will usually get 102 and octane boost).

  20. Ah fair enough then. Might look into the hotplate thing a little later then. I don't *need* to shave my head, but I want to to up my compression to give a bit more poke. Not interested in engine transplants or turboing as it will be a daily, and not looking to spend a huge amount on it, or to have stupid amounts of power. PnPL want $90 for a head if I pull it off myself, and they guy on the phone said that if I get it tested and it's stuffed, bring it back and grab another one. Sorry if my questions sound stupid, but I have only really had experience with Holden 6s and RBs.
  21. Mine is a Series 1, being 1982. I understand changing the wiring, thats easy. When I grab hotplates from PnPL (if they have some) I'll just grab a big section of wiring as well... stuff it in my pocket or something. If you pack the cam towers, wouldn't that give les lift on the valves? Or would I then just adjust the clearances to suite? I can't hold off too long, as the head that's on the car is cracked. Either that or a blown gasket. Is the 280ZX head injected? And would it be just a straight swap? This is the beast
