  1. G'day, Just thought I'd post up a few pics of some pics of rust spots on a Skyline I've just bought. None of it looks too major, but I'm not sure what the best way is to deal with it. I've used some WD40 on the small dots, and otherwise just tried a nylon kitchen pad to clean up the boot a bit, and a bit of polish on other spots. There's also some rust on the welds either side, where the a pillar and windshield meet. It's in a pretty tricky spot though. Also, on the LHS the paint at the very bottom of the door panel, where you put the jack, is flaking off. Underneath there's a fairly cruddy surface, which I'm guessing is the factory protectant? Basically I was wondering: 1. Whether any of this is anything to be particularly concerned about...the car is otherwise in unbelievably good nick, so I'm guessing the rust it does have is pretty common? The main part I was concerned about is the A-pillar/windshield spot, but its in a pretty tough spot. Can I just spray WD40 on it to provide some sort of preventative? 2. If any of it is bad enough to do anything about? I know it won't fix the rust, but will applying touch-up paint over the top of any small spots slow it down at all? I'm hesitant to muck around with it too much and make it worse. If I did have to properly treat it, I was thinking about applying 3M rust dissolver: http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-st...aspx?pid=220261 or the K&H one http://www.khst.com.au/IMAGES%20JPEGS/RUSTDISSOLVER250ML.jpg I was thinking of applying it with a small hobby paint brush, then painting over with touch up paint (particularly for the stuff in the boot). Thanks for your opinions. I've never owned one of these cars before, so don't have much of an idea for what would be considered bad or not. Also, the windscreen rubber has shrunk and is lifting on each corner...is this something that needs to be fixed asap?
  2. Ha ha, Just re-reading my post and realised that. I meant 651's (plural), should have put 's. My apologies. Also just found out that I can't edit the post (too old). Anyway, they're stock wiring into stock head unit. I'm using an old-school cassette tape to 3.5mm plug from 2001 to play MP3's. Rear's are still stock. Bearing this all in mind, bass-wise I'd say they're acceptable, but not great. IMO better than alot of others I checked out including the Alpines. I think if I did the rears as well it would be much better, and probably better with a new head unit as I think it might be struggling a little. Higher frequencies sound pretty good though. They basically sound like they're about as good as you can expect from the setup, and good enough that I think with the rears done I'll be more than happy. Won't be putting a better head unit in for a while though.
  3. Hey all, I know most people are probably going to make spacers, but I found some pretty decent speakers that fitted into the stock front pods on a S2 R33, Polk DB651s. They are actually pretty decent, and I was wanting to avoid splits. http://www.polkaudio.com/caraudio/products...rs/6-1-2/db651/ There are two, standard and slim. I got standard, for $130.00. They have a tweeter in the middle of the cone that you can change the angle on a little. Fitment wise, (minus wiring), they go straight in. There is a rubber gasket they come with that they come with, and you can still use the factory screws. No trimming/drilling of the factory pod required. Wiring wise, I got some header plugs from Jaycar and soldered them to the speaker, then jammed these into the factory wiring. They weren't the best fit, but hopefully won't vibrate out. Posted as I saw this question asked a few times when I searched and the only answer (some Phillips speakers) was from years ago. I tried Alpine Type S and some Sony 6.5 4 ways before these.
  4. Haha. That was basically my plan, whatever I get I'll take it to a mechanic for a good check-over for all that stuff. Cheers for the reply--just wanted to make sure it wasn't a major drama.
  5. Hi, I've had a couple of inspections done on Skylines, and both the reports came back saying that they had the incorrect coolant concentrate. However, otherwise the cooling systems have been tested and the car driven etc. with no other engine problems noted. Is this necessarily a big deal--i.e. is it common for the coolant to gradually decay over time, or does this mean that the motor has possibly had damage done? I'd ask the inspectors but I can't get in contact with them. Thanks!
  6. G'day, I'm after a 2 door, manual Gtst or GTT. I've wanted a Skyline for a while, but have been trying to get some savings first--just been driving around in an econobox. That was boring me to tears, so I looked into a novated lease, but the only car that I kinda liked was the 09 WRX. Great for practicality (can actually put a mountain bike in there), but pretty expensive compared to a Skyline--about $70 000 after tax to own the car after three years inc. running costs (I'm thinking a Skyline should be about half....but maybe I'm wrong). Anyway, I'm after something that parts & servicing won't be too expensive for--I'd like to get into track days and not have to worry about how much things will cost to replace. I'm guessing 34s will be a little more in that department, but I'm a big fan of their looks and maybe they'll be a bit more reliable. However, I don't know anything about them and am a bit of a noob when it comes to shopping for one. Main things I mean are whether there is a particular year to go for (ie is there a series 1 and 2 in the 34s, or a year model where things were improved). 33 is appealing for the price they are going for, however I'm thinking the 34 could be worth paying extra for (thinking around $20-22000)> BTW, 09 WRX is infinitely more practical for me--ticks all the boxes in terms of being able to fit all my shite in. I've driven one & it was pretty sweet, however the looks just aren't me. If I bought one it would definitely have to grow on me. +I've always wanted a Skyline...never really dreamed of a Rex, so it would be a bit of a compromise. Can't really see myself taking a brand new $45k car on track days either.... Any advice or opinions would be great. Basically what I'm asking is whether the 34 is worth the extra dosh, and for any tips on what to look for... Cheers!
  7. Hey, Good to hear that nobody has really regretted getting their cars. True that you're only young once too hey.The only other thing I'm thinking about is whether I should keep the runabout for during the week, and just have the Skyline for weekends. So do you guys reckon that around $22 for that S2 is pretty fair (ie just due to the fact its a 98 or something?) I usually change oils every 5000 and get the car serviced at 10000, are Skylines easy enough to keep doing that, or do they need to go to a shop ever 5000? As far as the finances go...I'm looking at $1k through Just Car, and I'm budgeting on about $60 a week in fuel (for 400kms...sound about right?) Finally, is it going to be a bad idea to keep one of these in a carport...ie do they get stolen all the time like WRX's? Cheers for the opinions!
  8. G'day, I was just after some advice from people re getting a Skyline. I've liked them for a few years and not really had the cash to get one due to being at uni and povvo. I've got a 2000 Lancer which is good on fuel, reliable, cheap to run...but boring! However, now I'm working full time I can save a bit of cash with the cheap car, but in the back of my mind I still want a Skyline. The only things really stopping me are that I don't have a garage, so it would have to be carported, I drive 100kms return to work each day ($), and wouldn't mind being able to save some $ to get a house someday...I think I've still got a tendency to be tight with money from uni& maybe stress too much about a nice car getting stolen... So what would you recommend? Is there anyone here who took a bit of a leap to get their car but doesn't regret it? Another thing which seems good from this forum is there's a bit of a lifestyle that goes with the cars, ie the cruises on weekends etc, that I reckon I'd enjoy. So should I stop being a tightarse and just get one?! This is the sort of car I'm after-stock, series two, no mods. Does this seem expensive? $20k seems like the limit for series 2's however I've heard good things about autoworx. Cheers! http://www.autoworx.com.au/ecr33-135341.htm
