Hey, Thanks all for the responses so far. They did advise replacing both front shockers but purely for a road worth they said only the front right would need to be done. I've also heard of using toothpaste to shine up the lights, does this damage them though? Anyone have recommendations on where to take it to have the work done? Alternatively I could try and sell it without rego I suppose? Cheers.

Hi all, I've finally decided to sell my 1997 R33 GTST after having it for nearly 8 years. Its been a great car to have and except for a few minor issues (coil packs / AFM) it has ticked along reliably - interior and exterior in very good condition. I'm in need of a more 'family friendly' car so the time has come to let her go. I took it into a local workshop last week to get a quote for a RWC. The following items were picked up and I was just wondering whether I'm being taken for a ride or whether the work and pricing seems OK. Also if the below does seem really expensive, any recommendations on where I could take it without costing an arm and leg and get the RWC done? (I live south east of Melbourne). Parts Labour Total Caster Rod Bushes 80 150 $230.00 Resurface Headlamp 60 $60.00 RHF Shocker 260 99 $359.00 Rear Tyres 300 $300.00 Rocker Cover Gasket 90 160 $250.00 Front Tierods 80 50 $130.00 + boot 10 $10.00 4 wheel alignment 90 $90.00 Rear tierod end 80 50 $130.00 Front Rotors 160 $160.00 Rear Rotors 160 $160.00 Rear pads 65 200 $265.00 *includes labour cost for rotors Exhaust earth strap * they said the rotors were 27.9mm on the front but needed to be 28mm and on the back are 15.8mm and need to be 16mm? Total cost:$2144 + $150 for the actual RWC. On top of that the radiator has just started to leak slightly from the top so I asked for a quote for replacement of that, the below was their quote: Part: $350 Labour $150 Total $500 Total with radiator: $2794- The car is pretty stock and comparative cars on carsales.com.au seem to be up for around $7500 - $9500 mark. I know that doesn't mean they are selling for that though necessarily. Sorry for the long post.... Any thoughts are appreciated. Cheers.

R33 When Cold Shakes Badly And Has No Power
R33_SII_97MSPEC replied to R33_SII_97MSPEC's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Thanks, I'll organise the purchase of datascan and check this out. For a 'standard' person is the software easy enough to use? I'm also going to replace the coolant temp sensor, they are very cheap and seems an easy thing to do. Can you purchase coil packs separately? If it is just one coil pack that is faulty. -
R33 When Cold Shakes Badly And Has No Power

Last night i unplugged the coolant temp sensor and took it for a test drive this morning, I did not experience the issue for the first time in the last week or two. I'll go for another test drive tonight once the car has cooled down again and see how it goes. I'm really hoping it isn't the head gasket, because that's a very expensive repair isn't? -

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check this out tonight a bit more closely and see what I can find - if anything. Does anyone have a breakdown of the steps that the skyline goes through as it warms up, as this issue is only present when cold I'm guessing that there is a part that is only used at these low temps or the faulty part changes in use as the engine warms up. Does that make sense? I don't know whether such info exists or not, I'm grasping at straws maybe....! Any other ideas I'd be keen to hear. -
Hi, I have a R33 Series 2, fairly stock apart from full 3inch exhaust, cold air pod and running 9 pounds boost. Car was running fine up until a week ago, i was driving home from work and all of a sudden it felt like I'd lost a cylinder. Car started to shake, sounded like a Subaru and lacked power. This happened after about 4 minutes of driving, the car had been off for about 9 hours previous (so it was a cold start). I was on a busy road at the time and couldn't immediately pull over so drove for a further 1 or so minutes and pulled over, whilst in the process of pulling over the car came good again as though nothing had happened. Continued home - a further 40 minutes or so with no problems. Since, every time I drive the car from a cold start after about 3-7minutes I get the same issue - once warm no problems at all. I've tried the following so far: - change the spark plugs, no different - Checked the coil packs (Yellow Jacket coils that have done about 20,000KM's since i put them in). No noticeable signs of any damage that I could see - Removed and cleaned the AFM with contact cleaner. Idle is a lot better (used to jump / spike at times) which it hasn't done for the last day or two since I cleaned the AFM Issue still remains. I'm handy and willing to tackle this but don't really have the knowledge of what I should be looking at next. I've done a lot of searching around and reading but can't really find anything quite the same. As the issue disappears again after a a couple of minutes it says to me that it isn't a spark problem? Sometimes it will happen, last for a minute or two, go away for a minute or two and then start happening again for a further minute or two. Some sort of loose connection? But why only when it is cold? I'd be really happy to hear any suggestions on what I should look at next? I'm also quite stuck as the car is my only mode of getting to work and I'm worried I'm going to do some damage if I can't repair this quickly. I'm in the south east of Melbourne and will go to a mechanic if I really need to. Sorry for the long post..... Thanks, Dean

hahaha, this is fkn funny. Sorry dude to laugh at your expense but who goes and buys a turbo car and then thinks they can take the turbo off and vic roads will go "arrh ok well if you have taken the turbo off i suppose it's all good, just make sure you don't put that nasty turbo back on again!" Thanks Joshington that was one of the best laughs I've had in a while. Hope you get it all sorted. -

R33 Boost Problem And Smell
R33_SII_97MSPEC replied to R33_SII_97MSPEC's topic in General Maintenance
Cheers guys, i will have a look for a coolant leak when it is not pissing down with rain (which is great by the way!). The smell is more of a rotten egg smell than a BO type of smell. Is there anyway to test the clutch at all? When i press down on the clutch the revs change ever so slightly and then when i release they go back to how they were before depressing the clutch. Could this be a sign toward anything? Really appreciate the feedback guys. Cheers. -
Hi Guys, I have a series 2 r33 gtst that i love to bits. Had the common boost problem that these cars seem to get (5000rpm starts to miss, jolt etc). I have had the coils out and they look ok and replaced the 1.1mm plugs with 0.8mm plugs. Made a difference at first but the jolt has come back. Think the coils are dead so i'm currently about to buy some spitfires. Anyway that aside i have started to notice lately that when i give the car a bit of a kick sometimes a bit of a smell wafts into the cabin, like a rotten egg sort of smell. Any ideas? The smell is only there sometimes and only comes on when i give the car a bit of a push. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Stalling At Idle, Sometimes Won't Start
R33_SII_97MSPEC posted a topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Hi Guys, I have R33 GTST Series 2 skyline. Recently, randomly when i go out to start the car i get nothing. Sometimes i can't even get the doors to open using the alarm remote. Sometimes the doors will open but when i turn the key nothing happens at all. Anyway the first time it did this after playing around for a little bit i found that basically wiggling the wires at the battery terminals would get the car up and running. This has happened maybe 5 times in the last two months. Also twice in the last couple of months i have been driving around and for a split second everything dies then comes back on as though nothing had happened. I'm guessing that it is an electrical fault somewhere along the line that is causing the above issues. My question is, could an electrical issue like this cause random issues with idle revs. Sometimes the car at idle will drop below 500rpm and bounce between zero and 400rpm and then stall. If i give it some rev then it usually picks itself up again and revs normally again. Just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences? The battery was only replaced at the beginning of the year and the connection at the terminal seems pretty solid. Cheers, Dean -
Thanks guys, i will look more into it. I have been told to look into APS as well. Anyone had any dealing with them? They look to do more holden and fords than jap stuff.

Thanks for that, any other suggestions other than what is written in this sticky? Also, any personal accounts/anecdotes? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to publicise...

Hi Guys, I'm looking for a workshop/mechanic around the Frankston area to take my skyline too. It needs some very minor engine work done and basically just want it checked over at the same time. I had a look through the sticky at the workshops but i was wondering if there was anyone closer to me, Mornington / Frankston area. My old mechanic was in Dandenong but to be honest i have had enough of his procastination and am looking for someone who will get the job done. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated, either reply here or PM me please. Cheers
