Stretched/undersized Tyres... Your Thoughts?
NZM.031 replied to NZM.031's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
it was not feature car article... it was in articles about time attack events, at tskuba and the like. and track cars aside.. what if i dont want to go to the track.. what if want something that will tear something like the putty road apart.... this is why i started this thread.. and compared it to wrc cars on tarmac... as they arent on a race track, they are on an average road.. you already mentioned the reasoning for some of them having stretched tyres.. i just made the mention of d1 teams and time attack teams to combat the "kmart" response. cheers Linton -
Used Mags Tips
NZM.031 replied to MSTRshenanigans's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
check for the obvious scratches, and marks... check all the lips are the same.. one may have been repaired previously.. check for cracks etc. around the mounting face and the wheel nut area.. most importantly, put them on your car before handing over any cash... unless he has the same car, you'll have to check how they fit in your guards, and put all of them on the front and give them a spin and check for buckles.. etc. theres alot more you can check if your really podantic.. but at the same time, theres nothing that cant be fixed if its a good price. cheers Linton -
How To Remove Rounded Wheel Nuts Help!
NZM.031 replied to vice5500's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
+1 for the smaller socket, single hex deep impact is the best as it will mangle the nut when you tap it on, giving it a good grip.. normal double hex sockets will crack down the side.... how we always do it in the shop.. much safer than drilling, grinding, etc. cheers Linton -
Stretched/undersized Tyres... Your Thoughts?
NZM.031 replied to NZM.031's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
they look like the good ol drifteks. flicking through a few, well, alot of hpi mags last night and found quite a few time attack entrants go the stretch.. some do, and some dont.. these guys arent cheap kmart boys.. and can destroy a set of big dollar semi slicks within a few laps. something else to think about. cheers Linton -

Stretched/undersized Tyres... Your Thoughts?
NZM.031 replied to NZM.031's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
also... does that mean, its ok for drifters to have stretched tyres... because they drift... but for anyone else... its just cheap and uneffective?? -
Stretched/undersized Tyres... Your Thoughts?
NZM.031 replied to NZM.031's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
haha... mudcrabs... i like it.. "back in 10... gone mudcrabbing.".... "no officer, i wasnt drifting, i was imititating a mud crab" the point there, is they are all using a street tyre... not a full race slick.. so why do drifters require no sidewall flex? to keep it tight and responsive and feel what the car is doing... not rolling around on tyres... i guess it comes back to grip vs handling and the two being completly different areas. traction is only one part of bigger wheels.. bigger wider wheels make for lower profile tyres and more and a wider wheel track, effectivly changing the roll centre. i had 215s on a 14x5.5" rims once.. traction was great... handling... pfft forget it. i may only have 8" of tyre on a 9.5" rim... but the profile is lower/tighter, stiffening the sidewalls reducing sloppiness, so the body on its $4000 stiff as coilovers and alignment arms is not losing it all through a sloppy tyre... that may well grip.. but can give an uncertain feeling as it rolls around. -
Stretched/undersized Tyres... Your Thoughts?
NZM.031 replied to NZM.031's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
thats completly irrelevant. is that why the top secret s15 in d1 runs stretched tyres... and ken maeda, and hibino tetsuya in the hachis.. and the apex rx7, and kazamas s15, and tanaguchis altezza.. definatly cheap arse kmart tyres thrown on there. -
is it still at lillfords?? might have to do a drive by. haha. if you do take it for a run.. cruise past my work in sandringham ave... up the road from lillfords, pleeeeeeeeaaaze!!!!

im gonna remove the fans and go back to a clutch fan, its just too much for the little alternator and i dont feel comfortable with it... all the big power and track gtrs etc i see still run a clutch fan, so im just gonna get another one.. ive got a new thermostat coming and some redline water wetter to go in so that should make it better.. cheers guys.

Stretched/undersized Tyres... Your Thoughts?
NZM.031 replied to NZM.031's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
it was obvious on the tv footage on sunday, of the ireland rally, that sebastian loeb's tyres were stretched.. and yes some were using wet weather tyres with deeper grooves, others were using a dry tyre.. which the pit guy said was a p-zero, and the tread looked very streetish... not a cut slick. id try and find photos, but my work has blocks on that sort of stuff. -
hey all.. after much reading etc. on here and other articles.. i had almost decided it was worth it to flare my guards to accept a proper width tyre for my new rims.. rather than stretching skinnier tyres on there.. i have read alot of good comments about response and stiffness.. and alot of negative about excess weight of the wider wheel, incorrect fitment, etc, and so on and so forth.. .. so a i pose a quick question to the haters and negative nancys about stretching... if its not good.... why do the multi million dollar wrc teams do it for tarmac?? they are the elite of road handling cars... driving on regular road surfaces that you and i can drive on... and using a P-Zero semi slick tyre... which are road legal and obtainable to the normal joe blow with wads of cash. for a track car that has a properly prepared track surface free from road irregularites it might be a different story... but if the wrc cars do it... obviously they have a good reason and are advantageous over running full size tyres for tarmac rallies.. so what are some thoughts on the stretching?? any articles to or for it?? and whats an acceptable stretch?? cheers Linton

hey guys just need some help wiring up some el falcon fans i got recently, as my clutch fan shat itself. at the moment, its unfused, just straight battery voltage from a switch inside the cabin.. so i wanna get it sorted asap. im thinking of wiring one to be the primary fan, and the other to come on when the original a/c fan comes on (may even remove a/c fan and just have the 2 radiator fans) for the primary, i was thinking of having wiring it through a resistor switch, just like the interior fan.. so i can have different speeds (as on full speed one fan really loads up the alternator, let alone two running full speed), the other option, is to have a variable resistor, like the one for the instrument lights, and just wind it up and down... that might be a better idea actually so it would be always on when the car is running, on speed 1, then i could have a rotary switch wired to a resistor pack, or variable resistor and just wind it up on a hot day, in traffic or after some sort of track work. would that work?? in thought it will.. and then when the a/c is on, or the temps get to high the other fan will kick in like the original a/c fan would.. spose ill just put a resistor in to slow that one down aswell. will the load put on the alternator decrease with resistors?? or is it just the voltage thats slowed down... current remains the same?? i love wiring things up and doing a nice neat job... but i could never get my head around electronics. cheers Linton

im starting to find that with hpi aswell... lately just seems to be big dollar cars, with every jap part thrown at them.. i wanna see more matt black, cable ties, and dodgy old turbos matched to an even dodgier engine, with home made, pieced together everthing... that works, and does its job as its meant to.

Fast And Furious Movie Will Have A Blue R34 Gtr
NZM.031 replied to Kujotk's topic in General Automotive Discussion
oh joy... lets see if the next generation of p platers get their mummys and daddys to buy them an NA r34 (as they have no idea why skylines are a such a great car) and dress it up full wank spec and see how much of a wanker they can be.. as if the skyline name isnt tarnished enough by idiots from the last 3 movies, they decide to make another abomination. $20 to the first person to walk up to vinnie and tell tell him to hit the gym -
