What Is Gtr Gearset Worth ?
SteveL replied to quicknissan's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
I'm afraid the news is bad. We've attempted to trace the 3rd gear PN in terms of the Nissan model it came from (a reverse directory look-up, if you like). There's no doubt that these parts are not for any Nissan Model sold officially in Australia. We can also say they are not for a JDM R32 GTR or R33 GTR. A quick check of some other JDM models in the JDM version of FAST turned up a blank as well (eg R32/R33 GTSt). Theoretically if you knew all the JDM model identifiers it would be possible to track these down......eventually, but it would be a very tedious job. Since these parts all have 'V5' in the last part of the PN it's likely they're for the same type of gearbox. Sorry for the bad news, and there's really not much more I can do. -
I don't....put new gaskets on my RB26 without sealer (apart from factory recommended areas) and haven't had a problem.
-
Suggest you re-check the seating of the new gasket. Tighten it down evenly in a criss-cross pattern. The part number for the washers under each rocker cover bolt is: 13268-58S01

Good to hear. I've just ordered a RH and a LH, hopefully will be here next week.

No pics. It will be screwed into the fan housing or the box it feeds into. Will be held by a couple of screws and have an electrical connector. If you disconnect it and the fan is running it should stop.
-
It might be that the fan speed control resistors have shorted. There's an assembly that screws into the side of the fan housing unit 'behind' the glove box. It will have a 4/5 wire electrical connector attached and is usually held by a couple of screws. It has a series of 4 or so wire coils (resistors) which control fan speed. One or all might be shorted or just need cleaning. That's all I can think of.

It can't be pinging if your at idle. Suggest checking something hasn't come loose under the bonnet.

Jun 2.7l Stroker Build Underway (hks T04z)
SteveL replied to StageZilla's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
It's a phosphate coating for corrosion protection. It also helps during break-in by retaining oil on the working surfaces (coating is porous). Bolting things together is fairly 'easy', the time consuming part with building a performance engine are things like checking bearing clearances with plasti-gauge, which is tedious. -
Diff Oil - For R33 Gtst
SteveL replied to benl1981's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
In that case I'd use a non-LSD diff oil, but using an LSD oil certainly won't do any harm. -
Diff Oil - For R33 Gtst
SteveL replied to benl1981's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
I've used penrite for many, many years without problems both on and off the track, but any 'name' brand will be fine. The main advantage of synthetics is high temp/load stability, but if your only planning on occasional track work a mineral oil is fine (and cheaper). If your concerned just change it more often. I thought some (??) R33's used viscous LSD (but could be wrong...) in which case a non-LSD diff oil is all you need. -
Doing Rebuild, Taper Plugs (came With Core Plugs)
SteveL replied to StageZilla's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Ahhh....should have looked more closely. The small one looks like one of the plugs used for the oil galleries in some Nissan heads, although I thought there was more than one (I say 'some' because I know that L-series heads do, but I've also seen small ball-bearings used in late model heads - they are a mongrel to get out). Off-hand I can't think of anywhere in the block that one of these is used -
Doing Rebuild, Taper Plugs (came With Core Plugs)
SteveL replied to StageZilla's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
They're the main oil gallery plugs which are at the front and rear of the block on the same 'side' as the oil filter and approx at the same height above the sump line. AFAIC if your doing a 'proper' rebuild the old plugs should be removed so that the oil gallery can be cleaned completely. Personally I replace the factory plugs with screwed taper thread plugs to make things easier in the future....getting the old taper plugs out can be a chore, although once you've got one out you can drive the other one out using a long, thin steel rod. -
What Is Gtr Gearset Worth ?
SteveL replied to quicknissan's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
I paid $230 from memory for all the shaft support bearings in an R32 GTR gearbox, and that was through a local bearing specialist, not Nissan. R33 GB is very similar to GTR, but it would be best to have the bearings out of the GB and take them along to make sure of positive ID. There are also specialist auto bearing catalogues which most bearing place have which lists all the bearings in a wide range of cars.....whether that covers imports I don't know. Sometimes they can also cross-reference from the manufacturers part number. -

This: does not match the PN for a late R33 GTR mainshaft 3rd gear, which is: 32261-12U14 What you have could be superceded parts, but the thing that bothers me is the 'V5200' piece of the PN which doesn't match my recollection of R33/R32 GTR PN's (for example '05U00' in the PN identifies a unique R32 GTR part). I'm going to have to do some digging in FAST to tie this down. -

Well your in luck, 2nd gear synchro is available in Australia and trade price is $69.70 (add $10-$20 for retail). PN is: 32604-30P20 -
This is not right. If the chassis is #220112 then the VIN should be 6U9000BNR32220112, not what you have. Is this a typo ?? Anyway the chassis number you've given is correct (comes up in FAST) and matches the model info you've given. It's a 1992 model and comes up with colour KH2.

What Is Gtr Gearset Worth ?
SteveL replied to quicknissan's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
According to my contacts at Nissan who have chased this issue right back through to the master parts list in Japan, the only replacement parts available for R32/R33 GTR gearboxes are the 'late' R33 type. The catch is that to put some of those parts in an earlier version of the gearbox requires replacing a bunch of other 'updated' parts, which costs big $$$. For example the original type 3rd gear synchro (and 3rd gear itself) for an R32 GTR gearbox is NLA as far as Nissan is concerned, the 'replacement' is the late R33 type BUT you can't fit it without also replaciing 4th gear (complete) + countershaft + etc, etc......as I said, big $$$. At this point someone will undoubtedly jump in and say 'your wrong.....I bought the earlier parts, etc, etc'. Well, that's fine, but please give me all the details and I'll pass it to my people at Nissan who will be most interested to hear and chase it. If this is indeed the case I suggest these are probably: - aftermarket parts (I'd be interested to hear of any suppliers, or - NOS parts In any event I'm not surprised to hear that the sum of the cost of individual parts exceeds the cost of a whole gearbox. -

Depending on when they were bought and from whom, they'll most likely be R33, but it's possibly their NOS R32 GTR. Part numbers will tell I just checked and JustJap still have new R33 GTR gearboxes listed on their site for $3200: http://www.justjap.com/parts_ngearbox.htm That gives you something to think about in terms of what to ask for your parts. -

A complete set of bearings (main and countershaft support) for an R32 GTR gearbox is around the $250 mark. If available, the synchros are about $100 each (ie each gear). I have to ring Nissan parts tomorrow, if I remember I'll ask about 2nd gear.
