Piglet's Rebuild Of His Busted Tomei 2.8
Piggaz replied to Piggaz's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
That setup is mint, Matty. As I said on the phone today, i've bought one of those Holley dominator 1800 pumps. By all accounts it should satisfy everything that gets thrown at it. Bit of an update. I finally got the car home. Huge issues with injector baskets filling up with this super fine silt. Its small enough to get through the 23 micron filters I have post pumps. The baskets have been cleaned about 6 times, fuel filters twice. The intank pump was flogged so a Walbro 460 went in as a lift pump. Definitely a whole fuel system clean out is in order. I have a few large 6 micron fuel filters coming also. The modified transfer case has settled the car down alot too. With the GT Pro in the rear set to medium, it was very taily. It feels much more planted, can get on the loud pedal earlier. Win win! The tune has been relaxed also. Boost controller is turned off, 3 degrees of timing taken out and 6-7% more fuel across the entire map just to make it super safe with this fuel problem. It still went onto make 415rwkw. Did a comp test and its 190 psi across all 6 pots. The box is great. Definately "woke" it up. The clutch is better than expected also. What the intank sock looked like. Bit of box porn. -
For a bloke that has never driven a stroker, you know a lot about the advantages of them, how they drive, blah blah. Farken 2.6L junk. Bin it. It has nothing to do with peak power. How can having more low to mid range twist be considered a bad thing?
-
Having been in a v cam 2.6, it would be about equal from 3500 ish compared to a 2.8. From the basement you can't hide cubes/stroke. * very rough figures though. There will be a comparison between the 2.6/v cam vs 2.8 using exactly the same turbo soon enough.

Rb26 11mm Cheapest Aftermarket Fuel Rail Option ?
Piggaz replied to cobrAA's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Are you looking to adjust fuel pressure? -
A FULL effort head is not cheap by any means, much more than what the difference is between a 2.6 and 2.8.

Anfanee. What's wrong with the Tomei kit? It's been in my car for a decade. Price up a nitto, BC, HKS. Choose whatever! You could go and get the Tomei 2.6 full counter crank for $9k a unit?
-
I've said it before.
-
Have a look at what I wrote. I wasn't going to sit there all night finding the cheapest price around. It all comes down to what product you use. Some may want Argo rods, another guy might use HKS. I'm not going to sit there and price up 20 different combo's. What I was trying to say was at the end of the day it's not $7000 worth of difference, even if it was, I still wouldn't use a stock throw crank. For what it's worth, a 2.8 is still too small.

1 - Tomei stroker = $5,200 on nengun ATM. That includes crank, rods, rod bolts, rings and pistons. 2 - Machining and assembly, lets call that $3,000 3 - Head gasket = $300 4 - Water pump and oil pump = $1700 for both 5 - Head and cams. That could range from a service to a full blown $10,000 effort. For the sake of it lets go with $2,500. 6 - New timing belt = $150 7 - Bearings = $300 The rest of the stuff like sump baffles, turbo's doesnt really matter. Items 2-7 you need regardless of what size engine you go with. Now, Just say you have turned a bearing in your 26, crank is toast. New crank (looked up a price on Ebay) = $1724 Pistons. Choose your poison. Lets go with CP = $1155 Rods. Say a manley H beam = $1280 Total $4159 for the rotating assembly. As opposed to $5,200 for a tomei stroker. $13150 for a stroker $12,109 for a 2.6 assuming new crank needed with the same above mentioned parts. I havent inlcuded shipping in any of this. Either way you'd be paying it regardless. These are VERY rough figures. I'm not going to sit here all night looking for the cheapest part or your brothers cousin can do a special price. By the time you factor in injectors, clutch, fuel pumps, ECU, tune cost, exhaust, dumps, turbo's, intercooler, wheels, brakes, tyres and alllll te rest of the gear you need to "complete" a car, the difference is insignificant.

Ring GCG. $300 a housing or so I think.

Blitz did a HKS step Zero with -9's. ill try find the graph when I get home.

No hard decision in it at all. .

And have it spinning off its head on the freeway? No thanks. Maybe a Getrag box with the 4.11's.As I said earlier, if I had to run a 2.6L I would sell the car. It's personal preference, no question about that. My car as it sits in its current tune I can belt up a hill and sit it between 4300 and have no reason to turn it harder than 6 - 6500 rpm. Sure I can go to 8000 RPM but there is absolutely no need. I just don't understand why someone would go "right, I'm going to build an engine" and buy rods, pistons, potentially a new stock crank, pay for machining and assembly, head service, gaskets , blah blah blah and not spend an extra $1000 or 2 and not build a stroker. Apart from an extra compression ratio increase and little bit of head work that you may do at the time it will drive pretty much exactly the same OFF BOOST as a stock engine. Not sure how you could argue it would drive any different. Forged pistons and rods don't make the power, they're a supporting mod. 2.6's can make the power no question about that. However, the GTR is a big, heavy car with no funky valve control, relatively tall ratios in the 32 and 33, lowish compression by today's standards. As a road car with larger turbos they really are a dumb choice. If you're happy with a setup that you have to turn harder to get the same result, that's great, but to build one is crazy. Look at what's Fatz is doing with stockers. That's thrashing the ass off it on the track with a 6262 making over 400 KW. If you go through his build thread he was chasing more midrange punch, that's why he went the single route. That's even in a track car. "Just rev it, go down another gear", rubbish.
-
Built 2.6 vs 2.8 Same duration cams Same fuel Same dyno and tuner Same turbo's Same ECU Not sure what you'd prefer.... I'll give you a guess which engine is which.. Carry on...
-
So a forged 2.6L with a stock head with and set of drop in cams with 8.5:1 compression will drive different to a stock 2.6L with a set of drop ins?
-
Nissan used a 2.6 L engine because of the group A rules at the time. If you look at the R34's they were using 2.8 L engines. As for this "rev" thing, WTF. Look at the length of strokes in some of the Honda engines. They have no issue spinning to the moon. 2.8 engines even the 85 mm stroke of a RB 30 isn't particularly long. All jokes aside, if someone said I had to go back and use a 2.6, id sell the car.
-
Some would argue the side wall loads with the shorter rod to stroke ratio. Meh, by the time that would really become an issue you would have sold the car or you would have given it a freshen up anyway. Then there is the argument of "revving" which is dribble. There really isn't a downside as such, unless you don't like more low to mid range punch. A 77.7 mm crank should be the smallest you should go. To spend all that money and go to a "2.7 / 75.7 mm" seems a bit of a waste. If you're considering building a 2.6 why not just throw in a good condition stock engine. Look at Fatz. By the time you buy rods, pistons, possibly a new stock crank, paying for machining and assembly only to have an engine that will drive almost identical to what you had. (Save for comp ratio increase or minor stuff like that) Why would one do that? Stroke it! 2.8 or 2.9 and enjoy some much needed midrange twist that they so desperately need.

Some are. After seeing this, I'll be going back through the fuel system with a fine tooth comb. I've never had an issue like this before and the car has been using E85 since 2010.

Educated Guess At The Final Tune Results

Make it home in one piece? -
After the best bit of two years sitting around after popping the gearbox, the car finally made it back onto the rollers in Friday night. It didn't feel right so the tune was stopped. This is what came out of my filters. The car was parked with 98 in it too. A fair amount of silty junk was found in the baskets of the injectors also.

It will hopefully be out on Monday at gate pressure which is 19 ish psi. Run around for a few weeks for the changes. Need to nail this fuel system. It's giving me the shits.
