Nismo GT vs. GT PRO + Run in time
V28VX37 replied to sweefu's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Unfortunately I spent most of the day confirming that my head gasket is gone so only got 7 crappy laps in. Morning was very wet and the rear was very predictable in power oversteer but other than that there's very little to report. Overall I'm not sure it's the right diff for my use to be honest. I drive about 10k a year and with a handful of track days it's only a fraction of the time that it gets used as intended. It's not a short distance city driving diff that's for sure. -
Talk to Glenn @ Chasers, he's got a guy near West Melb who fixed up my intercooler brackets recently, they came up well.

Ouch man that sucks, pretty rotten luck! My car's at the workshop at the moment for a head gasket so I've been going through similar questions. I think a rebuild is probably the most expensive option, especially if all you're after really is a stock engine. Lots and lots of labour plus the risk of missing something in the assembly, unless you pick a really good workshop. I reckon an engine swap is probably the way to go. You'd probably be looking at around 2k for a second hand Neo and another 2k or so in labour (unless you have a friendly shop) so 4k-ish all up. If you were to sell, it sounds like the car is currently pretty much a rolling shell so would be tough to get a fair price for it. This said if you don't need the money now but can't afford to rebuild/replace the engine one option is to just let it sit for a while if you have the storage – the way the prices are looking at the moment is pretty stable.

Blown Neo head gasket - Next steps?
V28VX37 replied to V28VX37's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
I went with the Mishimoto hoping that the fitment is a bit better. Paying workshop labour you'll easily lose any savings as soon as you have to muck around during the install. Ordered some OEM rad hoses too just as a precaution. -
Hard to find mate, I got my Bride bottom mount rail from JIS: http://www.japaneseimportspares.com.au/interiorseatrailnissan/ Note my Sparco sits slightly higher than stock seat in the front. If you want super low you might need to go side mount, depending on the seat (though you'll lose the slider with that). Good luck.

Does anyone have thoughts on the benefits of a Mishimoto/Koyo Racing/similar rad over a basic Cooling Pro from Just Jap? http://justjap.com/engine/cooling/radiators/cooling-pro-alloy-radiator-nissan-skyline-r33-r34-stagea-rb25-rb26.html As far as I can see both are triple core 40mm drop-in replacements but the Mishimoto is twice the price of the Cooling Pro. -
Welcome! ...but why frustrated?

What a mental build, awesome work!! I dread guessing at the final price tag o_O -
I saw the AR1's at Vicdrift at Calder over the weekend, nice looking tyre. Treadwear 80 FTW. The asymmetric tread pattern reminds me of my R888R's actually.

Bc Racing Coilovers?
V28VX37 replied to RB25PWR's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Johnny were these BC BR's? Cheers, that's a fairly different price range there. Quick scan on eBay lists shipped prices for BC BR's at $1,399 vs. MCA X-R Series (Race) $2,536.95 so hardly apples vs. apples. I'd love to see a back-to-back comparison of BC BR's vs. MCA Reds and BC ER's vs. MCA X Series in the same car and same road/track. -

Yeah very true. Looking at doing the list above ie. confirm it's the HG and then go from there. -

Thanks - Was that comparing BC BR's to MCA Reds? Looking at the pricing the Blues are in the vicinity of BR pricing, Reds are basically double that. The MCA X series is similar pricing to BC ER series. I don't think BC do anything in a similar price to the Reds. Anyway, horses for courses. -

Very little progress. First quote was too expensive, second quote ok but very busy so still haven't been able to book the car in, third quote never got back to me. Sigh. Any recommendations for workshops or mechanics in Melb who a) can do this b) want to do this c) are not crazy busy and d) don't charge an arm and a leg? Tough ask I know. PM's welcome of you don't want to promote in public. -

Seeing this a lot lately, MCA > BC. Could someone who has run both please summarise why MCA's are better? -
r34 GTT brake upgrade
V28VX37 replied to stranger12's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
I does look like you're doing it the hard way I'm afraid. You can have a decent brake setup using the stock calipers, just upgrade everything else around it, that's what I did: http://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/448613-r34-gtt-brake-improvement-without-breaking-the-bank/ The soft pedal you talked about in the original post is most likely due to air in the system, keep bleeding it. To bleed the ABS you can crack open the lines at the ABS unit itself. Bleeding instructions here: http://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/463353-post-track-day-qs-rotor-wear-gearbox-oil-ps-pump-manifold-nuts/?do=findComment&comment=7763812 Trying to match different front and rear calipers and get the brake bias right is going to be hard. The stock rears are smaller than the fronts for a reason, and matched to the stock BM50 master cylinder port sizes. Running bigger rears doesn't make any sense, and your bias is going to be way off. In fact, bigger brakes are not automatically better – it depends on what you're using the car for. Massive track brakes with floating discs, ducting and 250-800C pads are going to rubbish on your morning commute. Have a read of this: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/wiki/brake-faq-mythbusting-why-you-may-not-want-big-brake-upgrade/ -
Blown Neo head gasket - Next steps?
V28VX37 replied to V28VX37's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Now this is the $10,000 question, spot on. This car started as a family car and then steered towards a cheap track car. It's been a decent family car and ok on the track but never cheap. Whilst I'd love to have a scary 400rwkw monster, I'd pick a reliable 300rwkw over that any day. Reliable and balanced 400rwkw would mean forged bottom end, new injectors, new fuel system, new turbo, new intercooler, then the clutch is going to so new clutch, probably tail and drive shafts, and potentially some new gearbox internals. Then a flex fuel setup so a new ECU and 2x full tune. New brakes too, and to get those in, new bigger wheels x2 sets, one for the street and another for the track. That's 20-25k gone easy. At that point, if really chasing times, the better deal would be to sell and buy a properly sorted mildly built Evo, it's just the quicker platform. Plus frankly, the car is currently not the limiting factor in the least (besides reliability) - it's the driver. All I really need is more seat time, with the hope that I wouldn't need to keep on fixing the thing after every single outing like I've had to this year. So the short answer is, just fixing it properly without major upgrades is probably the way to go. -
Thanks Stao. Is if possible to build the new SS2 to the old dimensions so that it's a drop-in replacement? I think Johnny said you need to adjust and rotate the dump a bit to accommodate the new one.

Cheers Bill. Just reading through some threads, it is a big job, I didn't realise the whole hot side, timing gear etc. has to come off too: http://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/238753-head-gasket-install-on-rb26-how-hard-is-it-diy/?do=findComment&comment=4173497 http://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/14388-cylinder-head-removal-any-tips/ -

Cheers mate, definitely valve springs. The hope is that the bottom end stays in the car, I thought the oil pump was an engine-out job? -
