R34 Gtr Garrett -5 Turbo Lag, Need Advise
Roy replied to baicai's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
See this makes me sick in the pit of my stomach I love my singles, but the other day I was even pulled over in my daily BMW so the plan for the R32 is get it engineered with an RB26 and low mount twins. All so I can continue to enjoy it as a fun club-street car for years to come...and be slower. -

I was at Racepace yesterday. They had several of their uber 3" front pipes sitting on the floor. Almost bought one myself but need to get sump sorted first. Grab some HPI or other 3" dumps and 90% of your troubles will be over ...even with your current exhaust. By the time gases have cooled and hit the exhaust...at the power level you have it will be fine -
I am pumped about this season. So much to look at with what appears far stronger fight for top 6 positions.

Poor Alonso. Should have taken my advice and served his last year out at Fezz and signed an option for McLaren in 2015. But first see what the first proper James Allison car was like. McLaren have built some horrible cars over the years and when the fluked upon a good one in 2012 they threw it away for a rubbish evolution in 2013 And now you have the woeful Honda engine...looks as bad/worst than Renault given their budget and time to prepare. Oh well, i am ready to right them off for 2015.

I will be there Sat. Still not sure about springing the cash for Sunday or going to Malaysian GP. I am going to JoeSaward on Fri night to hear him moan on about things Survey of fans on helmet decision! SR22 with 7064 on 98 vs my RB20 with 20G on E85 made DOUBLE the power i had at 4,000rpm. We made the same peak power. So on a 25 it would be uber on 98 with WMI and expect it would knock on 330 and leave any Mitsu based turbo in its dust. The SR22 was running under 20psi too so there is some headspace....EFR all the way if you can

If you are making 290-310rwkws (dyno differences and all) out of a 20G compressor based turbo you are getting near/to the limit of what the poor lol thing can pump, lol surely. The 20.5G seems to be a smidgen slower to build boost but hangs in nicer up top. Boost taper suggests the 20G is at its limit..the hp and torque drop off really confirm it. Why wouldnt you take the extra hp in the final 700rpm if its given to you for $100. But i wonder if its a compressor thing or turbine. I have always felt that the L2 wheel is a bit rubbish. My TD06 always held on way better up top compared to the L2s despite all their hype. Perhaps the 65mm turbine gives a bit more torque and helps the compressor keep the boost up. Indeed those in the Evo world hi-flowing all the billet 68-82mm compressors on Evo and STI use the 65mm and 67mm turbines...not the lil 61mm L2 version.

What actuators are your -5s running? -
WTF are Bernie and his lackies up to? So they are banning drivers chamging their helmet designs mid season! What a farking joke. Why are they wasting their time discussing such matters when they had two teams go out of business at the end of last season. Force India and Sauber look shaky. You have big name teams that can't attract a series sponsor. You have a historic GP venue in the middle of Europe saying they can't afford to host the GP and the other venue can't afford it back to back... ...and they decide to talk about what F1 drivers are doing with their helmets. It annoys me to see such a great sport being completely farked / raped by capitalist douchebags

Is there something in the regs that says you have to run it inside the cabin? Personally I would make the lead into 5kgs sheets/plates and bolt them to the underside of the car. I always envisaged running it under where the back seat would go. Close to the COG but between the axles and nice and low. That way you can run perhaps 3 under the rear seat to two under the drivers seat. Lowers the the COG and can play with weight distribution as you see fit

Have you got boost plots to go with those curves?

If you are chasing response then leave std intercooler, leave std injectors, std fuel pumps etc. They are all fine if youa re just looking for a more responsive 300-310rwkws As others have said spend the time on the good quality dump pipes that have 76mm outlet. Get matching front pipes and then get a good 3.5" exhaust that matches the merge of the 76mm front pipe. From there check cams are set as per others comments...check the Apexi pods dont need a clean and away you go. Then just make sure your tuner knows what he is doing and isnt sitting on the fence with regards to ignition etc My 2c..if he is telling you that you need a bigger intercooler, hard piping kit etc to cure the lag then either there is more to the story or is trying to milk money from the situation. If you are trying to improve respnse and up the power to 400rwkws that the turbos are easily capable of then the story changes -
Sorry, thought we were talking E85. On 100 i made 280 odd backed off to 270rwkws for track work. 98 was 260 for track work...on E85 made 306rwkws off the gate with boost falling off. Another forum goer (Artz) earlier in this thread had the gate off the housing and std manifold on E85 that made the same power

Poor bugger
-
20G will do 300rwkws on E85 easy. My RB20 made 310rwkws on 22ish psi on a dyno that certainly isnt known for high readings. So will make 310 on any dyno...with rather mega response on a 25

He now has his new car and think he is open to reasonable offers...but really need to inspect the car as you will be impressed with the condition

Each to their own I guess but if its a street car that is only doing the occasional track day then frankly as long as its a reasonable quality semi synth oil can you really drive a car that hard on the road that a 10W-40 or 15W-50 or thereabouts is going to be an issue? When you do a track day, the 1-2 times a year ALWAYS put a fresh filter and sump of oil in the car. That't my practice. And frankly people saying run a cooler, keep it under 100deg....my experience is your oil temp will run over 100, more like 110-120deg c which is perfectly fine. Remember that the oil going through/around the cams and lifters is subject to far less shear and temp and only running at half the speed of the crank vsgoing through the mains and big end so you are only measuring the average oil temp on your gauge. The old wives tail , which seems to hold true on race cars is run the oil over 100deg c so any moisture/condensation, blow by gases etc dont stay entrained. How true that is I dont know...but of course those engines are purpose built and toleranced accordingly So that is the BS I tell myself and every time I go to the track I always run a genuine Nissan oil filter and Castrol 10W60. I love the viscosity, rape my engine with boost and revs and havent lost a bottom end. If you find on your aftermarket pressure guage you have 60psi at 7,000rpm with the oil up to temp with XX oil then I would be bumping up viscosity so that you are between 70-80psi

Part of me is so annoyed with Ten. Part of me hates their coverage and often streams it anyway. Part of me doesnt understand why I feel a sport shoudl be on free to air....but , I guess if Ch 10 could cover a sport properly then the ratings and sponsors would come .... so .... yeh Ch 10 can eat a dick
