A Boy's Love For His Rb20
Roy replied to Roy's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
So posting this here as I have the option of removing it now from the car now whilst its off the road. What are peoples thoughts on value of this ultimate RB20 looking sleeper: - R32 RB25DE block, crank and head - CP pistons - Eagle Rods - ARP head studs - std oil and water pumps - Tomei 256/8.5mm cams and cam gears - Tomei valve springs - Plazmaman Inlet Plenum - 6Boost Manifold and Turbosmart gate - Genuine Greddy T67-25G - Xtreme Single plate clutch - RB20 gearbox (210,000kms) - ID1000cc injectors - Tuned AP Engineering RB20 Power Fc inc Z32 AFM - inc Splitfire Coil Packs Can include comeplet loom too if folk are thinking S13 conversion or something So how much so you reckon I would be able to sell the whole show for? Engine, turbo, injectors etc all less than 5,000kms old. Gearbox and clutch is really the only thing that is tired. Still works fine with no noises, doesnt jump out of gear etc but is obviously at its limit and has plenty of kms on it Graph is off the wastegate with no EBC and quick safe tune Really need the cash for the Judd V10 and transaxle I am putting in it (I wish) -
4 points work fine if you have a proper seat and your harness mount points are in the correct locations. Trying to use a 4 point on a std seat or cheap race seat can be problematic

I think Sauber have earned their right to be on the grid. Very suscessful sportscar program. Encouraging results in the early year with Ilmor-Mercedes engines before they went to McLaren. Had a tidy car in the BMW years proving that they were doing as good job pre and post BMW as the results were not overly better with rubbish BMW Motorsport muddying the waters. They are a strong "mess up and we will be there to grab a podium" team. They are missing James Allison going to STR, but they are what F1 needs. And forget Fezz and RBR taking too much money out of the sport. How about CVC/FOM take a smaller percentage for their management of the series and give it to team and circuit owners. How about they dont rape teams by having contracts with airlines, hotels and DHL etc which dictate that teams in the series must use these series sponsors. Only for these service providers to rape teams by charging higher airline fees than joe public are charged. Higher hotel rates...I read DHL absolutely rape F1 teams for logistic costs. And all these paid premiums are no doubt kick backs to FOM for awarding the contracts in the first place. Farking capitalism and carnts with billions that somehow need billions more. I remember when sport was sport. People lived in communities....now we all seem to live in an econmomy where everything serves the economy and need for bigger profits year on year. F1 is just a reflection of the broader business/economic paradigm that corrupts everything it farking touches. Phew, feel a little better now for that purge. Meanwhile Uncle Joe talking that Vettel to Ferrari frees up Alonso for Mac. I hope something changes at McLaren, Sauber too. Bin Sutil and get Frijns in the car with the new Canadian money
-
Anyone see Adam Parr tweet? 8 teams for next year and 3rd cars in 2015. Sauber, Marussia, Caterham, Lotus all in trouble. McLaren, Williams losing money. Though Saubers seems to have a Canadian billionaire to their rescue
-
Yeh he hit Romain...was a pretty blunt chop across the bow. I am hoping Caterham call me this week. I am ready to step up

I thought Magnussen was hard done by. But I like the precedent. You cant jsut drive other cars off the track when they are alongside you. This "right to the racing line" is a bit of a crock when there is another car alongside you, even if they are only 1/3....the fact that they are there means you shouldnt just ruthlessly cut their lunch. Look at the amazing, respectful racing you had with Massa, Hamiltion, Macs and FI. Dan...Bottas...all respectful of the track needs of the car the guy that they are racing. One of the best Monzas I remember. Dan has messed up the last two quali sessions with mistakes. Hope he can get it right in Singapore where Vettel has been untouchable. Tempted to jump on a plane.

So went looking for Button interview post race. Was curious to see if he was sooking about rough and ready racing or thought it was fun tough racing? Glad to see he is enjoying his last few races in a McLaren I almost feel sorry for him Jenson Button: "This wasn't the result I was after - but the was good fun nonetheless. It's just a pity that we didn't quite have the race pace we'd hoped for: when you start fifth and sixth, you're not just looking for a points finish, you want a bit more than that. If we'd had a clear run, I think we could have done a bit better - but, in the traffic, it was easier for the cars around us to pick us off than it was for us to pick them off. I had an amazing battle with Checo - we took the first Lesmo side by side, which doesn't happen very often. It's a pity I couldn't get past him - I tried so many times - but he was so strong under braking that to match him into the turns I was locking up the fronts and the rears, which left me struggling for position on the exits. But I was really on the limit. It was superb wheel-to-wheel action - I hope it was great entertainment for the spectators and fantastic TV for the fans at home."

How funny is it? Just embrace it or go to Advanced Hair. Fark knows e has more money than Warne Proving his inner farktard is strong...cant even be a good winner. Rosberg did choke, but glad he he was upbeat when he jumped from the car. Sick of sooks! Bottas and Dan continue to show their class "I have a great team of people who work with me, who give me advice and guide me," he said. "It's advice, not you have to do this. They give me a bit of information and take that and decide how to use that. I felt I had the pace at the time so I felt I had to use it now, I was certain it might not come again. I knew that was the best time to put pressure on him. I did it a couple of races ago and he doesn't seem to like it, so I'll try it a bit more. "We've got a long way to go, but one step at a time. The support I've had from the fans....

So Hulk is going to turn into another Heidfeld or Fisi unless he picks back up the ball and flogs Perez; who is doing a good job

I dont mind Sky coverage. I think the BBC arrangement with DC and Anderson with Davidsons and Kravits was the dream team. But I am now ready to wipe Sky. Lewis gets race after race advice on where he is losing time, strategy for exits on corners and braking and not a word said . FP2 , Rosberg asks his engineer where is there more lap time and the Sky crew launch a line of questioning that does asking and the public hearing such questions make Rosberg sound less than competent! FFS, are they so Hamo-biased retarded? And they harped on about it. Saying nobody else gets that support from pit wall!!! More than ever want Rosberg to hand it to Homo. Come on Nico!

So what is hatchet Kolles up to at Caterham? He is meant to be building up his new F1 team with Estonian money FFS. Get out of Caterham and let them do their thing. I am guessing since he seemingly made the introductions he is now working his way into the team as far more than an advisor. Oh well, I am guessing Team America Ver 2 is real and will happen. Torro Thingie or whatever it was called is BS based on the fact that Kolles is at Caterham now Man its 4yrs ago since me and the Count were there. Pretty sure someone from SAU has been to the Italian GP every year since about 2010...not this year it seems

Because I am desperate to see Romain get a good seat I do find myself wondering how much infuence Allison will be getting at Ferrari. "You know, when I was at Lotus and we had Kimi and Romain in the cars...Romain was ...." Means I would have to start liking Ferrari, which truth is now that Dennis is back at McLaren I would find it a lot easier to like Ferrari than Mac. LOL, its September and what is one of the 3 biggest names in F1 is running around in the back of the top 10 with no sponsor after the last two seasons of losing money
-
Its not confirmed yet, but does seem to be expected that teh Mcalaren engines will find their way to Lotus next year. Not sure its wise as myself as Renault will get there and Lotus need the French support of Renulat engines, Total oils and are likely to get better deal out of Renaul then Mercedes powering their own car. Also...common sense http://boxofneutrals.com/2014/08/nice-guys-finish-last/

Wet quali ruined their weekend. Massa is an odd one. Has pace, can still race...but race after race is having Rubens Honda-esque problems and poor Williams bleeding points. I know he is on a two year contract but with Bottas heading into his 3rds season and looking pretty damn rock solid maybe its time for Massa to step aside and they give someone else some testing and a shot. It is a real shame that Frijns has such a chip on his shoulder as he has the talent to get a seat even without cash. Would have been great to see someone like Williams give him testing instead of Nasr. I do wonder if any teams out there are making excuses for JEV and willing to give him a shot. I cant see where he is going to end up unless Romain does kick a goal with McLaren, Williams etc and Lotus want another French driver to keep Total and Renault happy.

Up to you but there is no way I would run a front brake line perpindicular to the caliper like that. Recipe for disaster ... unless you have done something that isnt obvious to ensure its not going to shear with suspension travel and lock

He was on Skyspotys weekly F1 show. Basically said its all a beat up. People need to move on it was a nothing racing incident. "storm in a tea cup"

Murray Walker on the Hamo-Rosberg situation...1000% right. Wish the rest of the English media were more like Murray. My god, did i just say that

Do you have gauges or oil pressure, water and oil temp? I never used to let that stuff get hot. As long you know your oil pressure is good then I was always comfortable leaning on it. LOL, then I removed my dash logger and operated on the ignorance is bliss theory. Hey, it worked too. What killed my engine was sittinng in day to day peak hour traffic when a coolant hose under the inlet manifold got a split and dumped all the coolant in traffic and overheated. Fixed and drove it for another 6 or so months but the head gasket was making it miss at idle etc. Point being....as long as you are being sensible about the abuse, keeping an eye on things....just enjoy it A $2 coolant line in traffic can kill it pretty quick. I say a GT35 setup could be a fun thing. The more I think about it though I think E85 woudl help wonders with regards to controlling any inclination the engine may have to detonation when you start running decent ignition and boost. They need ignition to get them going

Ok...my take...since nobody asked I suspect Alonso will see McLaren as about as good a bet as Ferrari. Why move to a team further down the grid, with probably a worse campaign ahead of them in their first year with the new Honda engine and headless McLaren? Vs Ferrari, the team he knows. Is comfortable with and the car isnt too bad. Engine not too bad. It wasnt James Allisons car and after a 1.5 seasons Allison doing his thing I am tipping Ferrari with an engine catch up will be in the hunt next year. So for me. Alonso is no chance of going to McLaren next year. He may, but I still doubt it sign an agreement with them that McLaren have first option on him for 2016 if they place top 3 in the 2015 WCC. But I dont see him going to McLaren...but his thrist for a 3rd WCC means it would be smart (and he is that) to sign a LOI with performance clauses. I put it at 10% chance Now Vettel, makes more sense. I question whether part of his perforamance this year is him falling off the ball. Been with the same team now since 2009 and the RB folk for even longer and along with the family it could just be getting a little stale. So I can see him needing a new challenge to motivate himself and I can see RBR saying Dan is doing a good enoguh job to cover the whole (if any) that he may leave and their Jr program wont struggle to promote an STR pilot alongside Dan. So wont try to meet his cash demands etc. So I can see Vettel walking , RBR is his home...but Newey is going....he was there during their peak....move on and catch the next team on the up and McLaren is a fair bet. So , I thiink with Vettel under contract. He will sign for uber Honda-McLaren bank but will be for 2016 and will see out his 2015 contract. IMO that will give McLaren a good option to pick and choose for 2015. With Honda they could still be very strong but nothing like race miles and competition despite dyno and factory work Mercedes will continue to be strong next year with little change in rules. RBR will eb stronger with improved Renault engines and ditto Ferrari. Honda-McLaren will just be giving too much away starting with a poor car from 2014 and a new engine. LOL, now this means with Vettel locked in for 2016, they can experiment next year. If Button (and he will) continues to be outqualified and raced by a rookie then he will get the hatchet. Magnussen is doing an impressive job as a rookie considering the car he has. So (it always coems back to this) Romain will be called in on a 1 year contract with performance clauses to get extensions. Romain wll go head to head with Magnussen in 2015. He will smash Magnussen and McLaren will start the 2016 season with Vettel and Romain. You read it here first!

Well in first and 2nd gear often. I used to wring its neck to make sure it fell back into the meat of the power band for the next gear. So 3rd used to get 7,800 or so....4th about the same...i just shifted based on the shape of my power curve. So my rule of thumb was revs + boost + power kills engines. So I woudl just take whichever two options I needed on a given day. For instance Winton I use to take boost and power and dropped the rev limit to under 8,000rpm. At Sandown I would drop the boost to about 18psi and take the revs to get the thing out of the slow corners. If you truly want the engien to hang together then I think as long as your tune is good and you are running 18psi then 8,000rpm is not a concern for the motor if you are under 300rwkws. Depending on what you are trying to achieve beyond that I guess its all a balancing act LOL...this was 9,600rpm in 3rd gear on a motorkhana run through some witches hats But the engine had a leaky head gasket so I upped the pain threshold I was putting on that engine
-
I will add , plenty of other setups will work better and make for a quicker car...but I have never had the fastest car etc but I tell you what just about everyone who drives my car loves it (when it has functioning, matched brake setups on it ) So, I think it can work better than it is and shoudlnt be too expensive to get the most out of it. If you dont mind popping the engine then just keep it, because hwen sorted you are going to have a 350rwkws setup and I am not sure how long std RB20s last at that power with those revs and boost. LOL, I can vouch for 22psi, 8,800rpm and 310rwks
-
Look, provided the foundation of what your trying to work with is sound (manifold works, gate is decent...your exhaust doesnt have a collapsed muffler or cat etc) then I say forget these knockers. I get it... MY 310rwkws RB20 hammered. When I put the TD06 on it in 2002 everyone knocked me saying they are crap etc. Fark em...I did it anyway and loved the 11 years of enjoyment it has given me So...do it....you obviously dont mind lag for the fun hit of power....but I like you cant see why that turbo isnt working miles better. Based on what a TD06H-25G does on an RB20 (similar but a tad smaller then GT35) I would say you should be able to get 20psi by 5,300-5,500rpm. Rev the thing to 8,500 and its still a pretty good power band On a turbine as big as the GT35 I think you can go down to a 0.63-0.72. I woudl try to get it in the 0.6X range but dont know whats available. People will say its restrictive etc but remember you are only using 2L to spin it. If you have the chance then throw E85 at it. It just dumbs everything down and you can just throw ignition and boost at it reliably until you are happy. Make sure you have cam gears, and dont mess with the inlet manifold or cams. Leave them std Easiest thing to do is drop the exhaust on the dyno and just run the dump pipe. Remove and blank the wastegate with a blanking plate and give it a few dyno pulls increasing the revs 500rpm at a time. Run it to 4,000rpm and see what the boost curve looks like. Then 4,500rpm, etc etc. You will get an idea of what theboost curve is without worrying about whether the exhaust is a restriction, wastegate creeping etc. LOL, the GT35 will be lazxy so easily able to control it without a gate and not fear overboosting the engine. I would also put a cheap pressure gauge on the pre intercooler and post intercooler. You have not mentioned the cooler you are running and can easily be the cause of a few psi going walk about etc. If you are fault finding its is very possible a number of small things compound the main problem. When you have a GT35 on an RB20 its only going to exacerbate the small problems.
