  1. I have read of many situations that decent setups with boost, revs and decent power have ignition break down problems. Some say cas issue, some replace the std coil packs to other types...some have said igniter compatanility related issues. Seems variable and i am no expert. I expect switched on installers have got to bottom of it but can easily add cost to install.
  2. You may want to run some allthread through the top and bottom flanges of the oil cooler to make sure its core is compressed/supported. When at temp if the thing just hangs from the top they can start to delaminate and damage the core. They need to be fully supported, especally if they are getting hit and banging around on a circuit.
  3. All good advice, but the real question is how modded is the engine? And how was it tuned. The real problem with engine getting hot is what is happening to combustion temps as the head starts to get real hot with 110deg c coolant running through it rather then 85 deg C. If the thing has been given a load of runs on the dyno with no bonnet closed and no dyno fan to get temps up to what the car sees on the track and is running a tune with ignition and fuel levels required for that temp then you dont have so much to worry about re a hole in a piston. From there its a concern over a spun bottom end and its about oil quality and quantity. I did almpst two Bathursts with no oil cooler and drivign until then engine light came on. Thing was it was on a fresh sump of Mobil 10W60 and later Castrol Edge 10W60 at the start of every track day....knowing that over the 5 or so sessions through the day the temps and loads the oil was seeing was probably going to be breaking it down. The other thing I will suggest when running largely a std setup is shift at or around 6,500rpm and you will find temps stay lower longer. Its only when I started using all the revs that the temps climb faster.
  4. So getting back to ECU s... people having ignition related problems with Vipec. Is That all sorted now or a good rule of thumb to follow so not to be an issue?
  5. Aus GP tickets paid for. Mega pumped. Week before in Portugal driving Portimao and Estoril then rush back for full speed laps of Albert Park in the mega RB20 then corporate in Brabham. So, so, SO mega broke but so worth it
  6. A Thai GP will just be another European GP with all the English, Irish, German and Spanish backpackers that will attend. Wonder how many drunk Englishmen will get caught out by lady boys?
  7. Well pretty disappointed with the 2013 new blood. Chilton is a hack with Daddy's money ...ok hack is too strong a word but he is capable, thats about it. Gutierrez has been bested by Bianchi in 2011 and in 2012 his rookie team mate had the measure of him and some poor luck only saved him from being by his rookie team mate. h All in all rather unexciting newcomers in 2012. Pic deserves a shot at Caterham and hope that Kobi or Petrov can hang around at the last Caterham seat.
  8. I have a bunch of Lotus clothing for the next season including some Kimi "Leave me alone" shirts I just hope Romain gets confirmed. I can live without the others, Be good to see Prodrive or the likes of come sniffing around a tech partnership with Caterham but thats not going to happen whilst the costs are still so high ...edit...just read Romain Groinstrain has been signed up for 2013 Lets hope he has a better year in 2013
  9. Awesome news for Nissan fans. Next year will see Nissan throwing a fair wack if support behind the R31 as well as V8....guess they are trying to promote their motorsport heritage. Some old names coming back , some cool pieces of kit to go with cool cars...now to see who buys the Winfield GTR so Jim can flight it in the R31 complete with RB20 goodness
  10. Have a read here...loads of experiences/comments http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/topic/252576-video-cameras-for-motorsport-use/page__st__480
  11. But he is a nice guy and it would have been nice to see if he just needed time...but he has proven he isn't as even as good as Fisi etc who are quick on their day. Petrov put him to shame which really only showed that Trulli was past it, despite being mega quick when he was younger
  12. I hope he gets confirmed soon. Can't be doing his confidence and prep for 2013 any good sitting in the wings. Kobi is gone as well along with Heikki. Shame I can't get excited about Perez.
  13. Every 12 months or so I read the Vipec forum and I still read way too many "how to' , "why does" questions. Great that Vipec has support, but seems to need it. Last time I read it was still waiting upgrades to be able to do some of the things it was meant to. Has that changed? Was meant to have launch control, boost control for certain gears, being rwd thats the feature I am interested in...along with traction control and other advertised features that had not been fully developed They do seem to be the realm of the tinkerer....I run E85 and 98 tunes in my Power Fc and runs fine at the moment so really the Vipecs really need to make those feature accessible for me to consider upgrading, I need a new ECU due to the NEO head on the RB20 I have coming....so interested in options
  14. I can promise you they are NOT A KNOCK off. They use the same pad, but the pistons are different sizes and materials, the calipers probably different materials and they mechanically in no way resemble any AP caliper that has ever been available . All they share is the pad shape....so it hardly makes them an exact knock off The Alcons are not forged monoblocs...they are cast and they are Monobloc due to ease and price of manufacture. I was only showing a friend today how much heavier they are compared to 6 pot GT APs which are two piece forgings. Side by side the A'ps are lighter...so point being is not that the Alcons are bad, just that they are not a forged competition caliper...they are a premium street caliper
  15. Better fuel system? I kept everything 100% the same except for injectors. Same Nismo fuel pump, lines etc etc etc. Just bigger injectors and re-tuned Power Fc which I flop between 98 and E85 when I know I am not going to be near E85 (rare these days in Melb) It made very little difference at same boost, maybe 5%, but when I wanted to run more boost it actually made more power and the extra 3-4psi meant another 30rwkws. With the std plenum it would have fattened up the mid a smidgen but typical of the std plenum at 8,000rpm it would have fallen over rather then keep on climbing-holding power You can see the shape of the curve with std plenum (98 and 100 fuel) Then with Plazmaman (plotted against std plenum..can see the trail in power at high rpm and the difference in response) Then Plazmaman and E85 I am only guessing but if i still had the std lenum then you can imagine ay 200km/h it would be 30-50rwkws down on the plazmaman. So means with E85 if you keep stoking the fire you can see you have a pretty wicked spread of power making 260-300rwkws from 135km/h to 203km/h. In my books makes the car pretty genuinely fast to punt
  16. Looks seriouly tough these days...go the R34 rims
  17. Not a problem. If you want the seat thats in the car then can't of hoped for a better result.
  18. Great watch Also, my god at the F1 presentation the other day Alonso's new Mrs is something different
  19. With xmas here this crap is still laying around and will be out at my storage so can actually pack the stuff and post up until NYE
  20. Just saw your post re AC. Still have it...can I come look at the bits? If so PM me your number
  21. Can you confirm the width of the rear 330mm rotors?
  22. I would go E85 before the plenum change. On E85 I think the top end you get from E85 may mean its worth the trade of torque at 4,200rpm. If running 98 I would go back to std plenum
  23. A very, very, very tough looking car!
  24. At what rpm do -5s match GT-SS turbos for torque and power? I would be surprised that on a well setup track car you are going to miss the difference in response. Tarmac rally car absolutely...but a circuit awd car... I would be surprised if a -5 car didnt leave the GT-SS car for dead....even on a std displacement RB26 And if you are going to use track times to compare times you cant use Vic times these days at a standard. E85, AO50s with track changes means the ballgame has changed. Teens are still a huge effort at Sandown but a car that did an 18 on 98 and RE55s would be scaring a low 16, maybe high 15 with E85 and AO50s. Its just that none of those 2006-2007 98/RE55 cars are still getting around and now that the E85/AO50 brigade are out there I think its easy to think the gruntier GTSS turbos and response are making for the quicker car. Hell, when a std RB20 makes a grunt 310rwkws you know its time to move on from all this fascination with response and GT-SS turbos Or maybe I am wrong.
