  1. This weekend was Round 3 of the MGCCN Tar Series at Ringwood Park. The track layout was Track 4 which is tight and technical and the little 86 handles it well. We ran the car as it ran in Tamworth and didnt bother raising the pressures back up, rookie error! Run 1 was slippery as fk at around 75sec Run 2 was better but still sketchy with 72.5sec Run 3 was getting better again with a time of 71.5sec Run 4 pissed down with rain as we were heading up to line up so slowed back to an 81 sec run but was fun! Screwed up the Go Pro footage on 2 parts by running the 34 Cage mount on the 86 which makes it low and can't see over the dash and then also forgot to focus it anyway! The front old Go Pro 3 got a bit of front bar footage so made a crappy video just for memories sake, if you don't like the sound of wet farts you can use the mute button
  2. We made a last minute decision to run the Toyota 86 at a lapdash event at Tamworth - Oakburn Park Raceway. It was a little Go Kart track so we left the 34 at home and head off for a long weekend! Was a great place and I'll likely head back out there later in the year for a Tri Series event which combines your 3 lap times from a standing start. We ran the car on Zestino 07rs front tyres which are pretty grippy and decent! The rears were near dead Zeknova 240tw street tyres that are the eveready or tyres - Never say die! The balance of the car is really ordinary with this setup but makes it more entertaining to drive! As usual the little reliable FA20 made terrible fart noises all day but punched above its weight and handled the small tight track easily! We did knock a coilover loose for the last few runs but still kept knocking times down! Fastest run of the day was in the untimed practice at the end but was also cheating as the tyres were hot from back to back runs lol There were some cool cars out there with a WTAC Evo, Aussie Race car, Cool old Datto, Sports sedans etc... If you see the lapdash events advertised on MA's entry section I recommend heading up for a look as they are a great bunch of guys and its a good facility for a bit of fun. Just watch out for the old crusty (now) local Neil Next weekend the Toyota is back out at the local Hillclimb track - Ringwood Park Raceway... Round 3 of our local comp on track layout A4 which is a lot of fun! I chose not to record any Go Pro footage of the 86 as a figured nobody had time to listen to that sound! 😂 The R34 will have the hotside removed for heatcoating ASAP so it can then be put back together and be good to go for the next track day. Round 2 of the Supersprints isn't until June so we may look for something sooner if possible.
  3. Round one of the CSCA Supersprints done and dusted! Was a wet and windy day for the most part with most of our sessions raining. We got one dry session where the wind created a semi dry line on track that last for a few laps but quickly got greasy again as soon as the rain started again. There was an oil slick from the bottom of the hill all the way to the pits where a poor old escort lost his oil filter seal. The oil created an odd racing line but it did the job anyway. AR1s were really difficult to get pressure and heat into on the wet sessions which was unexpected, I thought being a soft tyre and a heavy car they would switch on well but turns out I was wrong! I really enjoyed the wet and slippery conditions as the cars balance is finally on point with all of the rear suspension changes and the visit to DNA Autosports so it was a handful but a lot of fun. This footage shows those few semi dry laps and then how quickly the grip went away with a bit of water, nothing exciting to watch but I am loving the new G series combo - This was run again on the 16/17psi gate pressure setting and I wasn't letting the revs go past 6000rpm so the thing was hardly on boost as it turned the tyres very easily. Its days like this that made the EFRs epic response a negative and the TS setup being as complicated as it is I can't easily just change to a smaller gate spring for the day. A lot of people have asked why I would give away the low end response after spending all of the money to get the combo built... This is a perfect example of why the change was justified for a dedicated track car. We plan on running the full CSCA series this year and RD3 is on the 1/4 mile which I will be running and not changing the car configuration so lets see how we go putting 400kw onto a drag strip with all that camber in the rear lol More updates to come when I get time.
  4. I wasn't unhappy with the performance of the EFR in any way, in fact we never ran the boost controller to show its potential on my setup but I wasn't happy with 47 wastegates, lines and spaghetti pipework when you have to work on the car at the track (which with something so complex you often had to fix stuff). A simple single scroll, single gate and dirty big Garry are more than enough to get me into trouble and with the added boost we will run in time it will be more than I can handle as a driver anyway. The sound was something I was missing and tried to fix with the T51r mod on the EFR but the G35 sounds that way from factory so that was also a win! Inside the cabin I can now hear the exhaust note and it helps with judging RPM as I don't look at the dash (Not at Pheasant Wood anyway as you would very quickly find yourself in a concrete wall lol). So far so good. More updates to follow once I get some boost in it and more seat time. Street car = Buy my old setup and be happy forever... TS and EFR was killer for that Dedicated track car = keep it simple stupid!
  5. An artsy manifold pics after a trackday heat cycle... Have only run the car on track at around 1 bar at this stage so nothing exciting to report... Turbo and manifold combo really gives the car an RB note that it was missing with the fancy EFR setup. First impressions of the G35 are good! Will run it again this weekend at the same boost as the EFR to see how it compares. 20psi on the EFR was roughly 405kw and 20psi on the G35 is 415kw so same same with curve above 4000rpm near identical. Under 4000rpm the EFR would kill it in a street application but on track so far I think the G35 is a winner.
  6. Been super busy getting things sorted on the car and so far so good. Heat coating is not done yet so will hopefully get it tuned and running and then once the local place gets time I'll get the dump and rear housing down to them to do. Was considering doing the manifold as well at the same time as there is no word yet on an ETA of their manifold blanket thingos. Cosmetically there is a bunch of stuff to clean up including the gate line plumbing but I recycled all of the original lines and although I had olives to re-do the lines I wasn't sure where I wanted everything to sit just yet so ghetto spec for now. The focus is to get it running and then improve as I go, I'll make sure any track work it does will be short stints with plenty of cool off time until I get the heat coating sorted as the heat radiating off everything is amazing compared to the old coated setup! Now that everything has a coat of paint slapped on it it doesn't look as bad as it did. Still room for improvement. Car is bled and serviced and ready for a low boost touch up tune for now. The goal is to just get it running on gate springs or a low boost setting for now as I am planning on changing the ECU once I sell the old turbo setup and have the funds to do so. At that time I can then get the thing wicked up a bit. Not sure what to expect but you will all know soon enough...
  7. Looking forward to seeing your results! I'm sure mine will be fine, should be nothing I can't learn to drive around on track and get good results! Initially we will just dial in a tune to get it on track but I'm sure we can tweak things are required in the future. I'm not sure the G30 is a good idea for a dedicated track car even though the response is appealing!
  8. Mine won't be anything special as it will be on gate springs and low boost pressure compared to most running them! It's not a choice I made based on performance as I was happy with the EFR as it was, it was purely for practicality as I built the 34 to do bulk laps and it is certainly hasn't had the chance to do that! I'm keen to see how it goes but also nervous as I made the decision last minute as time pressure got the better of me! Decision was made on the turbo last week and the car will probably be on the dyno next week and then straight from dyno to the track so with fitting and fabwork I didn't give myself much time to mess about. I will be upgrading my ECU later in the year so a tune will need to be done again anyway so if there are any concerns its not the right choice I can easily swap it over at that time without much fuss!
  9. That was the main appeal of this setup over the old. Changing wastegate springs now would be a 20min job, changing on the old setup would be 2 days at best lol... We will run the car as is simply to get seat time, biggest thing holding the car back is my lack of seat time due to so many niggly reliability issues... Hopefully we continue to eliminate those through the year and really get some bulk laps done through 2023... No point blaming the car or the combination until I give it a fair go! The EFR sounds good, looks good and goes good but if I can't swing spanners on it easily being a track car then I'll be better off with the changes I have made! Whoeever buys that combo will get a killer deal on a system that is good to go! I didn't notice anything to rave about with the EFR compared to previous turbos but I guess I never really got a good crack at it either... The last run with the EFR wasn't that long ago and we are going back to the same track so it will sort of be back to back if the conditions are right! Racepace has a G30 770 1.01 result coming soon on a race car with the same engine combo so I will have something to compare to with that thing as well, keep an eye on their socials as I would assume they will post results. They've been really helpful and suggested the G30 but I took a punt on the G35 for now.
  10. It will be running on smaller tracks initially and I found I was having to pluck 2nd with the EFR anyway so I dare say it wont be a lot different with the G35 in that regard... Only one way to find out... I tried leaving the EFR in 3rd off the tighter corners and it just took too long to get its steam back again. Will find out in the next few weeks either way!
  11. No sequential business here... H pattern FTW! No idea how it will spool or respond as there was limited RB info to go by and nobody seemed to have the same answer. I spoke to as many as I could and got as much info as I could to make an uneducated guesstimate. Will run the G35 900 and if down low its a pig and hard to drive I can easily switch back to a smaller version in the near future which is why the V band setup was appealing! I was close to pulling the trigger on the G30 but as much as I like the low down response I also don't want it turning the tyres off every corner making it slower overall. Will find out if it was a good or bad decision soon enough! I've put 17psi gate springs in and will see how it rolls over on that and then if needed we can switch on the boost controller (Which has been off for years as it never got used with the EFR combo).
  12. G35 900 as its purely for track use. Still 50/50 on the decision but first drive will tell if it was right or not. I was planning G30 770 with 1.01 rear but figured on a 2.8l it would be very snappy and potentially harder to drive. Will see what happens in the next couple of weeks.
  13. Quick update before RD1 of Supersprints start... My Re-built EFR 8374 Supercore is for sale as it will no longer be needed as a spare - $2000 for SAU members My whole EFR turbo package will be for sale shortly with near new alloy EFR8374 with T51rmod and Turbosmart BOV and the TS Hypex custom manifold, twin 40mm turbosmart gates, custom 4in dump, wiggins off turbo and front pipe, some braided lines between gates plus speedflow turbo fittings etc... This package will be around $7500.00 depending on what I salvage for my new setup keeping in mind its near $5k retail for the EFR these days - This combo performs amazing, looks and sounds amazing but in terms of serviceability trackside its not a viable option to leave on the car for the heavy track use it will be likely to see over the next couple of years. As its mostly fresh and will be perfect for any street or light track use combo I would rather see it go to a good home. Boost control was never activated on this setup and on the gate springs alone it made between 410-450kw on around 20-21psi depending on the temps and the tune. It is responsive, its fun to drive and it sounds amazing as see on the dyno video. I'm going back to basics with a simple Garrett, single gate and basic manifold... No bells and whistles approach as the key for this car is laps and lots of them! I'll update as I go. You can actually see in the image below where a V band failure torched my paintwork on the car which was unable to be fixed trackside and ended our day, this is something that was easily fixed at home but red hot at the track it was impossible to access and is a key part of the reason for the back to basics approach. Racepace has been really helpful with advice on this change and although I will be sacrificing some performance from the current combination it will allow me to get back on track and run reliably for years to come and there will be more performance gains from seat time than any turbo combination can give. Jez will be handing tuning duties and i am looking forward to seeing what he can do with this setup as we will be tuning for torque. K Racing has assisted with sourcing Turbosmart goodies for the build and has also been a long time supporter with both cars, if you need tyres or any performance bits Ryan is the once to speak to! Hi Spool has been assisting with the turbo stuff and hopefully finds the G series for me this week so we can get it running and into fab quick smart! Stay tuned for more updates.
  14. Interesting! I'll keep that in mind. I'll likely end up back on the Z221 anyway but these will give me a quicker path to get back on track for now!
  15. Win it or bin it! Yes, at Wakie with the smaller FP 3076 turbo I was holding 4th gear till 8300 or so RPM as it saved a shift to 5th but with the new EFR and bigger HP I would shift to 5th much earlier and it has a much higher terminal speed at the end of the straight. So experience with belts flying off sound very similar! Hopefully Ill have mine on GP circuit later in the year... Been years since I ran it, I think last outing I had some issues but still managed a 1.39... Should go much quicker now though so set me a target to chase
  16. Exactly what happened when mine came off... Seemed to happen on decel after the kink and I took the scenic route to turn 3 lol... Luckily those were the street car days when my front bar was about 4ft off the ground!
  17. I've run the idler kit for years and haven't had a belt issue since. My car randomly started throwing steer belts at high RPM and Ross sent me one of those kits and never had an issue again. I considered going electric steering etc but for now it works and while it works I'll keep using it. Flicking a steer belt may not sound like much of an issue but with the castor/alignment I run and the wheel size etc the steering returns to centre and is heavy af once the belt comes off... Not ideal when you are driving at a wall on track!
  18. Strange thing is the nyloc on the balljoint on their adjustable LCA still knocked loose and that was swung off to tighten by both myself and DNA when it went for alignment and spanner checks. Will monitor and see how they go, surely it has to be something simple. The 34 will mainly do Sprints and Time Attack stuff with the occasional drag and hillclimb event for shi!s and giggles (No changes to align or suspension, just thrash) and I'll use the Toyota 86 for basic track days and hillclimb stuff I'll go back to the Z221 I am pretty sure as they have been an epic tyre and last quite a while but just to get the car going on something fresh I thought I would give the AR1 a crack and test out the Wheel Turtle stuff with those as well. There was a cheap set of CR-S in a 265 that popped up the other day that I went to buy for the 86 but I missed out on them. The 86 will probably stay on cheap $100 Chinas Finest tyres and I'll spend decent amounts on rubber for the 34. This year should see one or both cars on track each month hopefully!
  19. No major updates here... Chipping away at small items till I figure out what to do about the Hot Side... Running low on time so I will have to make a call soon! Rear suspension was a bit loud after Pheasant Wood, found the GKTech arms knocked loose again for the 3rd time so swung off everything again... Not sure if this is a common problem but its happening over and over on my car and I dont think I have done anything wrong. I did however make a bad call and used the cheap "Urethane" bushes in the upper parts of my rear hubs and when I fit them they felt like plastic instead of "Urethane" and funnily enough they performed exactly like plastic would, even with the lube on them they smashed to bits and left me with nothing... The spherical bearing type was out of stock when I ordered those ages ago but I placed them on backorder and chucked them in now so hopefully no more issues. Between those and tightening the balljoints and lower arms again all knocks are now gone! I'll keep trying to figure them out and if the problem persists I'll have to make some calls! Also decided to try run on the cheaper AR1 tyres for a bit to get things sorted before investing in another set of Z221 R comp tyres, I havent run the 34 on anything but Hankooks for 10 years but these things look the goods and feel pretty soft! I will be setting up tyre temp monitoring in the car using Wheel Turtles so hopefully I can start to get a better understanding of how stuff is going and not just kill all the tyres! Looked into AGP rear turbo housings as a possibility to run that with my spare 8374 on an ARTEC manifold or similar but at this stage I haven't made any decisions. Next on the list is bleeding brakes and having all rotors machined so they are fresh to go again since I got them red hot at Pheasant Wood doing a heap of laps without cooling off. Will update as I go!
  20. I got the CWC kit with GM alternator and the car starts and runs so much better than before... I replaced it a while back and so far so good! Fitment was perfect and he was really easy to deal with! Was about $500 for the kit from memory!
  21. Toyota 86 Track Car - For Sale (EOI) Potentially selling my Toyota 86 track car so I can focus on the R34GTT for track use. If the asking price is not met I will keep both and continue to thrash but I thought I would offer this up to SAU members as its a well built and sorted car that is reliable and a lot of fun to drive. The car is currently serviced and ready to hit the track and if the full package is purchased it has spares and additional rubber to go. 2013 Toyota 86 GTS model with 85000km (approx) Cannot be registered - Track only use. Vehicle was written off at approx 84000km so majority of its life was as a stock street car. The build is documented online by the previous owner. The car looks and performs fantastic. It is an extremely reliable and well setup track car which offers cheap yet surprisingly quick track day package. On 240tw street tyres the car could lap in the 1.10s at Wakefield Park and on sticky rubber has the potential to go much quicker. Not bad for a stockish powered car on pump 98. The car is setup for track use but has proven to be competitive in its class at our local hillclimb track without any alignment or suspension changes to suit. Can be MA log booked for IP or similar classes with some safety additions and modifications however I purchased with the sole intention of seat time and not as a race car. Exterior wise the car is quite stock with only a few tasteful mods such as the bigger brakes and the wide Gram Lights. It is subtle and catches a lot of bigger powered cars off guard. Video of its last run on track can be found here - Engine: Stock FA20 N/A engine Perrin Intake SME EL headers Custom single straight through exhaust Tuned by LS Tuning - Approx 123rwkw Perrin Oil Cooler Kit Moroso V2 Sump Baffle kit New battery plus spare supplied AC delete kit fitted Mishimoto Catch can Maddat Fuel surge flap Regular oil changes Gearbox and diff: Verus Clutch Fork Direct Clutch - Solid Centre Cusco Shifter Spring Upgrade Shifter linkage bushes replaced Perrin Rear Shifter Mount Whiteline gearbox mount Whiteline Diff mount bushings Regular oil changes Suspension: AF Racing strut brace and BMC stopper BC BR Coilovers with new DS Valved shocks Custom spring rates front and rear 8F 7R Cusco Steering Rack bushes Full Sti bolt upgrade kit New front wheel bearings Hardrace Swaybars F+R Whiteline Swaybar link kit (R) MCA Traction mod ISC adjustable rear LCA Adjustable rear traction and toe arms Safety, Interior and Exterior: Velo Apex XL Race seat Velo 6pt Hans compatible Harness AGI Roll cage (Half with additional bars) Cage is MA Registered Cams approved fire extinguisher Fully stripped interior Sparco pedal covers plus a few carbon highlights Proper metal tow hooks Front blank off plates Facelift style taillights Blacked out reverse lights and badges Go pro and timing mounts fitted Wheels & Tyres: Set 1 - Rays Gramlights 57DR 18x9.5 +38 Zeknova 265/35/18 240tw tyres all round Set 2 - Lenso D1SE 18x9.5 + 38 (near new) Brand new Zestino 07rs front tyres 265/35/18 Brand new Zeknova rear tyres (tba) Hardrace extended wheel studs front and rear with open nuts Rolled factory guards - No flares or other mods to fit Brakes: Subaru STI big brake kit F&R Braided brake lines Penrite 600 racing fluid DBA 5000 front rotors with Winmax 6.5 pads DBA 4000 rear rotors with Winmax 5 pads Factory ABS which gives it mind blowing braking power Spares and Accessories: Genuine Subaru oil filters x 4 left Denstoj Rocker Retainer Kit - RRP $1100 Whiteline gearbox mount - Double ordered part Spare front wheel bearings - Old ones Passenger seat (OEM) Factory head unit - Removed for track use. I am sure I have missed a bunch of smaller details with the car as it has been modified along the way to make it as reliable as possible. As seen in the video I made a custom plate to hold my phone for lap timing, the plate will stay in the car and covers the old Radio hole. The factory radio/headunit will be supplied with the vehicle. Option 1) Car supplied as per the list above with all extras, wheels, tyres and spares = $22000 non-negotiable Option 2) Car supplied on Lenso wheel/tyre combo with no Rays Gramlights or Rocker Retainer kit = $20000 non-negotiable This listing is more of an EOI at this stage as I will keep it and keep booking track days if the asking price is not met. The pricing listed is to cover costs spent on the car using quality parts, If pricing is not met I have no urgency nor so I need to sell it. If it does sell, expect a lot more R34 content on the build thread. Please note, although the car drives and looks standard it is not registerable and must be shipped on a trailer. No test drives due to being a track use only vehicle. Full inspections are welcome but it won't get driven until money is paid. I may run the car at Pheasant Wood Raceway in the coming weeks if its not sold prior, you can view the car in action on the day if its of interest but no test drives or joy rides unless a significant deposit is paid. Also worth mentioning this car is not built for the Toyota 86 series nor would it be eligible in its current format, please do not buy with intent of competiting in this series as you are better off starting from scratch and adding the controlled parts required. This is a track car in its current form suitable for club or social track days at most race tracks, it can easily be converted to a race car for IP or other series by extending the front cage (AGI said it is easy to do) but please check with a logbooking agent or MA before viewing the car if this is your intent. This platform is also great for hillclimbing and other motorsport events as they are an excellent chassis. Turbo and supercharger kits are often available online and really make these engines come alive if you need more power. Just adding E85 and tweaking the tune will help. I chose to stick with the reliable low powered NA combo as I planned to do regular track days. I was doing 1-2 track days per month with Trackschool Trackdays when Wakefield Park was open but have since only run the car at a local Hillclimb track, the R34 has been used for the last track day I ran and is likely to take over trackday duties from the 86 hence the EOI for selling it. This will be listed online via FB, MY105 and similar sites within the next week or two but I thought I would post here first to give SAU members first look. Message me through SAU and I'll respond as soon as possible. Vehicle will be located at my work warehouse in Tomago 2322 (Near Newcastle) for inspection with prior viewing arrangements required. Cheers, Mat
  22. Keen to see what results you get! I was eyeing off the G35 900 but haven't looked into it much yet due to work commitments! I saw your comment about ease of fitment and those stupid nuts! I may try go a different path stud/nut wise if I go with ARTEC and hopefully leave the thread in the head this time lol!
  23. That eliminates part of the issue but is still pretty complex and has the turbo gasket plus heaps of welds around the manifold etc... I am trying to eliminate as many failure points as possible and also stay stainless due to the E85 etc The old 6Boost split the collector from prolonged use on E85 and I've head other stories of bits flying through rear turbo wheels etc... So trying to keep it simple and reliable!
  24. Spanner check over the holidays revealed a minor issue - So I will be removing the hotside first and getting someone to hopefully helicoil the head in the car! If not, engine out again which really isn't a good start to 2023 lol Brakes were originally priority on the lid with front rotors warped and needing machining and then once that is sorted I need to work out the front brake locking issues which could be partially shit rubber and also the corner weights in the front of the car are on the piss! 2023 will be about getting as much seat time as possible and more time in the 34 than the 86, I may even offload the 86 in the near future so I can focus on the Skyline as number 1 priority! If the hotside comes off again it will all go up for sale and someone will get themselves a killer combination capable of a lot more power than its seen, the turbo is a brand new ally unit and has done the dyno runs, one hillclimb day and a track day and hasn't seen over 21psi. The reason for the change will be to eliminate failure points and simplify the whole setup, after having to remove the hotside twice now I realised that the fanboi spec manifold and twin gates with twin returns and all the bells and whistles is not worth the hassle on a race car and is better suited to a well built street car that can be set and forget! Initial thoughts are to go a ARTEC Manifold, G series Garrett (I had a good run with the 3037 and 3076) and bigger single gate so everything is V band and simple simple! I'm yet to discuss with Jez about this as I would need to weight up the turbo size vs application! Still need a heap of smaller jobs sorted and some rubber but the car was mostly good to go after the last day and the only reason I found the stud issue was track maintainance as I was keen to get back on track in January! That will have to wait for a bit now but hopefully Feb at the latest as CSCA super sprints start in April from what I saw and I wouldn't mind getting some of those done again! Also want to get to Winton again this year and try some other tracks as well, first thing is get it running and semi reliable and then worry about where to take it! Good'nuf? 😎
