Chris's R34 Gtt 4 Door Diary
Chris32 replied to Chris32's topic in Members Cars, Project Overhauls & Restorations
For those looking at buying a second hand twin plate clutch, you can determine how much life is left in it by the gap between the clutch basket and pressure plate/cover plate You can see the difference between the new and used friction plate thickness and the gap it creates This gap is closed up when you do up the bolts on the pressure plate I measured the friction plate thickness, and although they were still in spec the small gap that was present between the pressure plate and the basket lead me to think that there wasn’t much life left and the clamping pressure wouldn’t be enough to risk installing it and finding out it was worn out You can see the extra space between the basket and the pressure plate, and also the extra space between the flywheel and the spacer plate between the two friction plates -

New clutch is in Few dramas but all good in the end. Dropped the car off for what I thought would be a half day job to swap the clutch over In the process of dropping the gear box it was noticed that the clutch in my car was a push type, and I’d bought and rebuilt a pull type clutch Ended up sourcing all the parts needed to convert it back to the original pull type Clutch installed, but it wouldn’t disengage properly- turns out the pedal box had cracked and was flexing. Once this was pulled out and welded up it all worked fine! Specs - Nismo Gmax twin plate, new Nismo friction plates from RHDJAPAN Thanks to Boostworx for the installation, they’ve done a good job! And to 1110 Engineering for the required gearbox parts Also did the diff bushes as these had worn out and the diff was clunking about Also managed to find my favourite gear knob so that finished off my Christmas present -
I had this once after switching fuel brands, all 98 I’d been running on BP for ages and then out some Mobil 98 in, and got the check light after giving it a bit The code it threw up was the O2 sensor It did it a few times but haven’t seen it since. That was about 4 years ago

200,000 kms now Going strong! Full service done, new belts, idler bearings etc Chucked a lower seat in it, I fit with a helmet now! Track days next year Nismo twin plate clutch waiting to go in, can’t fault the NPC in it though. Over 100,000kms, most at 250+kw and it’s hanging in there Must have been through 15 sets of rear tyres now too in that time! Snapped this pic the other day, still scrubs up good -
Nismo G-Max twin plate questions
Chris32 posted a topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Howdy folks I've managed to get hold of a Nismo G-Max twin plate clutch, pull type to suit 34 GTT Upon general inspection it looks very good, however I thought I'd run it by everyone hoping for some confirmation Measurements are as follows - Outer friction plate - 2.92mm, Inner friction plate 2.8mm. Spacer plate 12.74mm. The clutch disc itself if 1.62mm thick, so there is a decent amount of visible meat left on the plates Looking at specs new, they are 3.5mm new, out of spec at 2.5mm for the friction plates. My gut feel is that it's fine to use as is, but I'm having trouble finding any specs about the thickness of the spacer plate that sits between the plates So, 2 questions - am I right in thinking that its within spec and OK to use And 2, is there any way of double checking once it's all done up to make sure it's got enough clamp pressure. I kind of expected the bolts to squash everything onto the pressure plate a lot more than it seems to when I assemble it I'm pretty easy on clutches, the single plate 5 puck NPC i've got at the moment has lasted over 110,000kms of day to day driving Cheers, Chris -
Need help losing oil but no oil leak?
Chris32 replied to MrR33SKI's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
This might sound stupid but if your burning through lots of oil check your PCV valve is working correctly I’ve recently gone through a similar exercise with my Dads landcruiser which was using about a litre per 1000km It’s done 305,000kms so we thought it was just worn rings. However I decided to pull out the PCV valve to check it, and it was stuck open. The vacuum hose going to it had split, so it didn’t have enough vacuum to open and close it and it got stuck Cleaned it out with some solvent, put a new hose on and it’s using bugger all oil now, running sweet -

Well not much going on with the bus apart from driving it [emoji1] Pulled apart the drivers side door yesterday as the motor stopped working for the power window Cleaned everything, and pulled the motor out and cleaned it with electrical contact cleaner. It was filthy! Anyhow, the window works! I'll keep an eye out for a new motor however as the brushes were pretty well worn out -
I can confirm these are a great family car! Sure, they don't have falcadore amounts of room, but they have enough With 2 kids in booster seats in the back I offer have a few scooters and a bmx in the boot [emoji1] Good luck with the sale, it's been a good build to follow

If you are on Facebook lookup Spikes Auto, he seems to do a decent job without costing the earth

Or be like 99% of every modified car owner and accept the risks of being defected and the pain in putting it all back to stock to clear it And enjoy it in between

Did you buy this car through Tokyo Prestige here is SA? It looks very similar to one they had on gumtree for a while

Had the Intima SR's on front now for a few weeks, they are really good. No noise so far, minimal dust and decent amount of bite. Good pedal modulation under heavy braking Street use only at this stage -

Not with a proper gauge nah, but i was very fussy cleaning up the hub and the back of the rotor. The right front in particular I was getting quite a bit of brake shudder from and it turned out there was quite a bit of gunk between the hub and the rotor once they were installed and I had the caliper back on, i put the wheel nuts on and spun the rotors whilst feeling by hand for any obvious runout - not entirely scientific but about all I was able to do. Both felt very square so I continued with installing the pads and bleeding etc -

Fresh set of Intima SR pads on thanks to johnny at trak-life and a set of DBA's on thanks to V28VX37 Had the rotors machined to be sure, installation wise everything went to plan and I don't have any shudder etc Still on the initial bed in phase but by the weekend I'm sure I'll get a good idea of what to expect. So far they are very solid Still rate the Intima SS pads, keen to draw a comparison once they've been on for a while -

Thanks for the speedy replies! Looking more to improve the feel and performance I have now with the SS pads, with the hope of throwing in the odd track day in the future Having the SR pads on the back too, I'd like to match or better the pads on the front performance wise. The FP3 sounds like it's more track suited if it's not as good cold, so I'll just grab the SR's, cheers guys -

About to grab some new pads, I've had the Intima SS on the front of the 34 for over 2 years now - all road use but some decent drives thrown in that got them pretty hot They are very kind on the rotors however - bugger all wear and I've done about 35,000kms on them since installing. Full weight 34 sedan with 250odd rwkw I want to give the Intima SR or the Forza FP3 a try - to those who've used them, are there much difference between the 2? The SS pads are good but they lack a bit of bite compared to the A1RM's I had previously - however the trade off being zero noise and little dust makes me want to get these again, or try the next step up with the SR's I've got a set of SR's on the back at the moment, no noise and only a touch more dust than the SS pads Will be used with a DBA slotted rotor, which have been skimmed and ready to go -
300 Plus from RB25 for street
Chris32 replied to discopotato03's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Interesting thread, mines been at 250odd for a few years and will be doing a few things over the next 12 months to give 300 a nudge Everything on my car at the moment seems to be pretty happy at 250, HKS 2535 turbo, Blitz turnflow intercooler etc. I'm in no rush to change too much as it's a great daily package as it is Subscribed -
This might sound odd, but can you get some close up shots of how the re003's at 235/40 sit on your 9.5" rims? From what I've seen they seem to be quite a wide fit and can't find any pics online. I'd imagine 235/40/18 would be priced reasonably also given the common size
-
Should fit ok on the back at +20 I've had 9.5 +38 on the back and that fit with no guard work Mine are +26, with 245/40's and they fit well running about 1.2 degrees camber I have rolled my guards now however, it would probably scrub without rolling the guards Will most definitely poke a little, mine poke about 1-2mm unless you run more camber I guess 235's pretty narrow on a 9.5, I've got 245's all round and I wouldn't want any more stretch - not a fan of the massive stretched look

Can't say for sure but my experience 32 gtst fan on my 34 gtt - outer diameter is the same I put one on as my stock 34 fan cracked and I had a spare in the shed The 32 fan had less blade depth which cleared my radiator a bit better The 32 fan is much noisier so I went back to a new 34 fan

More maintenance Replaced clutch master cylinder New cam cover gaskets, half moons and throttle body gasket went in the other day too -
I got pulled over about 10mins after fitting mine and issued with a cautionary defect (9.5 +26) The guy was pretty good about it after I'd explained I had literally just left the tyre place and was waiting to see what I needed to do to make the fronts fit Unlucky, yes, but I couldn't really drive it hard without scrubbing anyway so I needed to do it The rest of the car was checked and apart from a low hanging exhaust he let me off with a written caution He said as long as nothing poked looking straight down over the front and rear guards I should be fine I had to pull my front guards quite a bit to make it all fit flush. Given that one guard needed to be repaired I just heated them up with a heat gun and pulled them by hand and rolled the lips with a round piece of timber
