  1. Usually more respected by who?
  2. On the one hand we have people saying that Skylines are too common, and on the other hand we have people saying that they should have sold them locally thus making them more common. And I'm almost certain that there are people that seem to say that they're too common AND they should have released them locally. I have no idea what those people really want.
  3. Maybe you should get your hand off your dick
  4. I had mine under the dash, above my left knee. It looked quite nice, when I sold it I really missed the nice blue glowy screen. Still do.
  5. If you cut the ECU power with an immobiliser, does that basically mean that whenever you switch the car off, you reset your ECU? Or is there more than one power wire, and you only need to disconnect the ignition signal wire or something, so that the ECU knows it's on, and there is a standby 12v that is active even when the immobiliser is working? I'm mainly talking about factory ECUs only here, which need power to retain settings. Others like PowerFC can be unplugged entirely and not lose settings, presumably because of storing them in static RAM and EPROM.
  6. NRMA have always done imports, at least they have always done Skylines and several others (including Silvia). But their prices for Sydney at least are ridiculous. The last quote I got 2 years ago was over $3500, that being >30 and 60% NCB. Also, they don't allow for any mods. Why would you bother?
  7. $1500 for Famous, $1800 for Just Car. Famous wins for me. I've also never had a problem getting hold of someone when ringing them, but maybe I'm just lucky. Remember they're in WA, so anyone ringing from the eastern states is unlikely to get through at 9am.
  8. That's pretty much what my mechanic (and the Oil Extreme site) says. Whether or not Roil contains chlorinated paraffins, take a read of this Oil Extreme article. Sure, calcium carbonate may be bad for your engine too, but I've not seen anyone say such a thing as yet with reasons why. Of all these additives you can buy, Oil Extreme is the only I've seen which says why its ingredient is better than the others. And they actually tell you what they use. Doesn't that defeat the argument of anyone saying that companies keep their ingredients secret to stop people copying them? How is Oil Extreme still in business if everyone is copying them, knowing the secret ingredient? If anything, Roil is a copy of Oil Extreme, at best. I'm not saying that that's a reason to not buy it. To be honest, I would much prefer if Roil *was* a copy of Oil Extreme with calcium carbonate and didn't have any chlorinated paraffins. But while it remains a secret, there's no way of finding out if it's bad for your engine in the long term. I don't have time to go visit my mechanic tonight, might have to make it next week now.
  9. I didn't know that about Coca Cola. But I heard this one.
  10. No. It uses the knock sensor to flash up the engine warning light on your dash, at a knock level which is higher than normal but should still be safe. Thus if it only just comes on due to a bad tune or bad batch of fuel, it shouldn't insta-kill your engine. (in theory) Yes.
  11. The main concern isn't that it might or might not contain chlorinated paraffins, but what other potentially harmful products it might contain. We shouldn't have to go through them one by one, asking if Roil contains one of them. They should just tell us what is in it so we can do some independant research about its potential harm to our engines. The site I linked to above is no more or less an authority on anything else quoted in here (by myself or other people) so I guess we're back to square one as to whether or not it contains anything potentially harmful. I will ask my mechanic why he thinks Roil contains chlorinated paraffins when I go visit him tomorrow.
  12. 8 when cold is fine, just don't thrash it when cold or you might blow a seal or something. It's a good incentive to keep your foot off the gas until it warms up, which you should be doing anyway.
  13. Ok I found this, which says that Roil doesn't contain paraffins. http://www.randyjustus.com/roil.htm But it doesn't say that it doesn't contain chlrorine. If it doesn't contain them then I have to go back to my original theory that it contains calcium carbonate, because by the description it seems to do the exact same things as Oil Extreme. But why not just say what it contains?
  14. Jealous of what? I emailed the email address given here, where I read the faq: http://freespace.virgin.net/car.oil/contac...act_details.htm
  15. If you ask for exactly that at your local parts shop (as I did) you will get the right stuff (It's in my garage right now and I'm too lazy to go and check)
  16. I emailed Roil and asked them if they have chlorinated parafins in their product. It doesn't say that it doesn't contain it in their FAQ, so if it really doesn't they should put that in there. I'll let you know if/when they reply.
  17. Here you go.
  18. When I got my RB74 pads, they were rather quiet. After several months though, the right front brakes started to get a little noisy. When it got to the stage where it would squeal on every slowdown, I decided to see if I could fix it (well, I put it off for a few weeks because I'm a lazy bastard). Here's the brief rundown on how I did it. 1. Buy some red gooey anti-squeal stuff from my local spares shop. 2. Buy 1-2 sheets of 80 grit emery paper from the same shop (around $1.25 a sheet) 3. Jack car up, remove offending wheel. 4. Remove clips and springs from pads. 5. Remove pads from caliper. 6. Sand back the pads on the emery paper until the glazed surface is roughened up. There may be some scoring marks left on the pads, it's not essential to get rid of every little groove. 6a. If your discs are badly scored, get them machined. Maybe you should figure out whether or not they need machining before you sand the pads back. 7. If the discs are fine and you can be bothered, give the discs a quick once-over with the emery cloth. It's pretty difficult to make even a light indent in the discs though, so don't worry too much. 8. Put red gooey stuff all between each layer of pad and backing plate, as well as on the back of the plate that sits on the caliper piston. 9. Put pads back into the caliper after the red gooey stuff goes tacky. 10. Bend the anti-squeal spring in the opposite direction a bit, to give it more tension for when it's in place. 11. Put spring and clips back in, put wheel back on, etc etc. 12. Test everything. 13. If you crash your car for any reason, don't blame me (disclaimer). It's weird how only my right front brake started squealing. The left front one has remained quiet all this time so I didn't bother doing that side. I only fix what's broken
  19. I do have a source, but the guy runs a workshop and is quite busy, and I don't think he'd like it if everyone reading this rang him up just to ask "Is this true?" or to abuse him about spreading vicious lies (whether or not he is telling the truth). Another concern is that the guy sells an alternative product to Roil, which doesn't contain chlorinated parafins. This is the primary reason why you should take this rumour with a dose of salt. I personally trust the guy, having been to him a few times over the past 6 or 7 years, but because he sells an alternative product we should try to find an independant source for confirming the contents of the Roil, which is really the whole purpose of my above post. I will try to get something typed up with more details after I speak to him some more over the next few days. But even if I do that, I would still like it if someone could come up with other sources about the contents of Roil. Busky2k's already done a neat job of helping confirm this Thanks Busk!
  20. I just heard that Roil contains chlorinated parafin as its "secret ingredient". Now, if this is true, it'll f**k up your engine in the long run. Chlroine turns into hydrochloric acid in the combution chamber, and it will end up rusting your engine from the inside! This may take a year or 2 to happen depending on how much you drive your car, so don't expect to see any damage for quite awhile (but check your exhaust tip as an early warning method). I have to say that I have no way of confirming this as I'm not a chemist, so if someone can let us know what the secret ingredient is please do so. I'm just giving you this warning just IN CASE Roil contains chlorinated parafin.
  21. Mod it and stop driving like a grandma, then you might understand
  22. Install the PowerFC yourself and adjust the injector setting to around 50% when you put the 700cc injectors in. That should make it drivable and also save on the cost of them putting in the ECU.
  23. Oh, I was just thinking that you'd pulled the pads out and washed them without doing anything else I think I cured my brake squeal, I'll write something up tomorrow after I'm awake.
  24. How did you clean the pads?
