I reckon he's on the right track though. He went a bit far saying they should NOT been seen as a hobby, but I think he's on the ball with counselling. Single out the people who drive their cars recklessly to show off and show them that their hooby or their toy (their car) is not a harmless thing they can do whatever they want with. Don't try to get rid of their interest in cars, try to get them to respect their hobby/toy as something that could kill them. If they toned down on the sensationalism when they talk of hoons there is some half reasonable ideas in there.

Hoon laws that relate to what car(s) people can and can't drive are rediculous. Cars don't rip skids by themselves, it's the wanker behind the wheel who thinks his mates will be impressed when he drops a static in the middle of the suburbs or guns it off the lights to beat someone next to him. Identify those with the attitude that they can do whatever they want on the roads and suspend their licence until their behaviour and outlook on driving improve. Better yet, put programs in place to weed out these people before they get a licence. Attempt to instill a cautious attitude towards driving in school and put emphasis on learning car control and respecting that if things go wrong they can potentially take your life or others. Young people will always want to experiment and do things for themselves to see what the outcome is so there definately needs to be a complex built where people can go to act out their curiosities and find out what happens when they do certain things in their cars. This also gives the aforementioned showoffs somewhere they can burn some rubber, test their car against others and just generally have some fun, in a safer environment. Getting a little bit of the desire to be a showoff/thrash the shit out of their car for what ever reason combined with forcefully changing their attitudes to driving on the road and towards other road users would do far more than waiting until they have performed stupid and dangerous acts on the road then knee-jerking with harsher and harsher blanket penalties.

Their comments are unjustified, but you seem to think they are 'fairly in line'. I sold at least 50 Sunday Mails this morning at work and the amount of prejudice against Japanese cars in the general public is disgraceful, comments left and centre judging the participants and their vehicles. Not suprised at the way the story was presented though, the media these days is more about entertainment/catering to people's emotion than presenting actual facts. The worst thing is the average joe doesn't realise it. RIP to the driver of the WRX and speedy recovery to the driver of the 33.

lol just got pulled over for absolutely nothing (apart from being guilty of driving an import) while on a drive with my mum They followed me out of littlehampton for a few kays, I knew it was gonna happen. After they'd finished they turned around, meaning they only followed me out of the servo and 3/4kays down the road to pull me over (in a stock looking Silvia) Had they been called for an actual emergency in Mt Barker or somewhere they'dve lost minutes on response time for the sake of hassling another import driver. Even my mum said it was utterly pointless

Shitbox. Had a 1600 so was a little quicker than the rolla. Continued to practice car control in this for a while. AE86 Sprinter. First semi-decent car. Spent heaps on it - 4AG conversion, coilvers front and rear, TRD diff etc etc. KE55 Corolla. Bought to get around in while the engine conversion was getting done in the AE86 A31 Cefiro. stock RB20DET auto. Had it for 3 weeks then realised if I'm going to have a tubo car it has to be manual KE30 Corolla. Shitbox. Killed it in 3 days then sold it to a mate for fk all 180SX. First turbo/manual car. Heaps of fun, spent a few grand on engine mods but still wasn't that quick. KE70 Corolla. bought to get around in whilst importing the Chaser. 80s Mazda 626. Stacked the rolla sliding so got this off my grandma for nothing. Engine was fked so didn't have it for long. MX73 Cressida. Ghetto cruiser. Custom coilovers, 14x8s, twin pipes. Looked gangster as but gave me heaps of trouble. JZX100 Chaser. The Chaser finally arrived after 7 months. This was my ultimate dream car (whilst being realistic) and lived up to every expectation I had (surpassed many as well). This was the first JZX100 to be driven on Mallala EVER Swapping it for the following 2 cars was the worst decision ever (in hindsight) but looking at them you can see why I did it JZX81 Mark II. ah yes, the Kids Heart/HKS drift car. Weapon of a car, nothing more to say. Only had it a few months as I lost my job not long after I did the swap but still had some fun with it. MX83 Cressida. Part trade along with the Mark II to use as a daily. was a Grande with leather and LSD but was in pretty shit condish. Thought I killed it 3 times but it just kept going, good old 7M-GE R32 4door. Good car. Was great fun to drift. Put it into a cliff street drifting but didn't mess up the way the car drove so kept punting it around for a while until I got too worried about it getting done and having to fix the damage properly. 70s LA Lancer. Bought the morning after I stacked the 32. 90% of the body was covered in rust but it still went alright for what it was. Can't complain for $300 S13 Silvia. Stock CA18DE auto. Slow as a wet week but heaps comfy and in good condish. S13 Silvia. RB20DET and 5 stud, stock everything else though. Drives well, kinda like the old CA one but can actually go up hills Pictars!

It's a damn shame this is the view of the minority. If more heads thought like this things might actually get done for the better of the entire community, instead of just the retirement section.
