If you want to get in to a real autonomous design field....I recommend civil designing.... designing roads, sewer, drainage, water reticulation, etc. I can state more applications.. It'll open up a fair few opportunities and not too much of a leap from town planning I hazard to guess. I've done a bit of building design albeit small residential stuff low story etc...but definitely for more design involvement and challenging opportunities try civil.

corporate cheques are fine but as suggested, go to your bank with him...at least then they've got his image on camera. write up something to say that you wont hand car until chq clears I don't know how it holds up my bank verified a corporate (australian army in this case) cheque and I paid a fee to speed up clearance/approval....bribery money if you ask me it still took longer than 2 days.
