What a dead shock feels like is fundamentally different to what an inapprpriate spring rate feels like. The stock spring will feel a little soft on a Bilstein shock but in reality a fixed shock will work well with a big range of spring rates. It would be a good idea to get a driving opinion from someone else.

What? Since when do you need helper springs to get the shock into full droop? They have gas pressure in them for a reason. If the shocks lack travel that is another issue entirely.

Which Has More Potential In The Long Run?
djr81 replied to TurboDoseBro's topic in R Series (R30, R31, R32, R33, R34)
Sorry but this thread is long gone. Just to tidy up for others who may for their own perverted reasons be amused by the troll action on here. You say the GTST suspension is superior. How? How does the roll camber compensation play such an important part after you have normalised it for track width and roll couple? Just interested is all. Would like to hear your thoughts on the matter. The GTST never ran in Gooup A. The various front engined rear wheel drives that Nissan campaigned lost out every time at Bathurst to the Commodores. Group A cars & regulations changed massively from 85 (earlier overseas) to 92. At the end they werent Group A rules anyway they were modified locally to even the field. Technically the GTR never ran under pure Group A rules in Australia. Your only correct point is to say the GTST is lighter than a Commodore. Which it bloody well ought to be given how much smaller it is. Anyway just because you cant afford a GTR dont bother talking up a GTST as a contender. Random movie quote: I could have been a contender. I could have been somebody. -

They "added" four wheel drive because the Group A regulations dictated a tyre width that badly compromised traction even on a 2 litre turbo motor - witness the Sierras & their struggles with rear tyres. When I say added I mean it was integral to the R32 GTR concept from the start. Which is to say it wasnt added at all. The motor was orginally to be a 2.4 litre but calcucations showed that the car would weigh enough to let it fall into the next engine capacity group upwards. So it went to 2.6 litres. Why are you even trying to compare a VT to a R32 GTST. What about them is in anyway similar? Lets see: Motor V8 versus turbo 6 Suspension. McPherson struts & semi trailing arm IRS versus wishbones. Two doors versus four. One is a family car the other is a pretend sports car. If you want a quick front engined, rear wheel drive track car just go and buy an RX7. Everyone else does. As for the Group A GTR no one is going to put such a historic and valuable car at risk by attempting to set a lap time just to impress an internet troll somewhere. -
Why the phark does anyone expect an F1 driver to be humble? I mean really. How is that in any way compatible with having the kind of self belief to know that of the billions of people on the planet they are, in fact, the fastest of all of them. Humble be fkd. It doesnt work that way. Oh and for all you whinging about Hamo whinging you should have been around when Nigel Mansell was driving. If they gave out trophies for bitching he would have a shed full.

Differences Between R33 And R34 Rb26 Engines?
djr81 replied to Bozz's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Nah I have done the re shimming thing & done the controller that fiddles with the lateral gee input for more front bias. But going from 4Hz to 100Hz must make the system more reactive & more repeatable. I mean, at only 100kmh you are moving about 7 metres every quarter of a second. So it is not like the R32 system is on the ball. How do we get hold of the 33 pinouts? Anyone got a manual? -

Gees dude, he was just starting to win. What is it about now. GTST's vs V8 Supercars? Or why there arent many 20+ year old lap records? Or about how much cars cost. Or is a better driver faster than a useless one. Or something? Winning. -
If that is your lifting gear then it is coming out through the top.

Differences Between R33 And R34 Rb26 Engines?
djr81 replied to Bozz's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
There is a schematic of the R32 unit in the manual that everyone has a copy of. Never seen one off an R33. At the end of the day you have the usual range of sensor inputs - wheel speed, accelerometers, brake input, TPS and that is it. attessa schematic.pdf -

What I would like to know is can I plug an R33 ATTESSA computer into my R32 & expect it to work? -
Williams. You are kidding arent you? They are having their worst season in living memory. Their million dollar super low awesome aero gearbox is a dog, other than the pay driver there is stuff all in the way of sponsorship & they just sacked Sam Micheal. Other than slowly sinking into obscurity/receivership I can see anything much happening to Williams. And it pains me to say that. Because after Brabham disappeared, then Lotus disappeared, then March disappeared, then Scuderia Italia disappeared, the Tyrrell disappeared, then Jordan disappeared I decided to support them.

Pirelli can build a good race tyre. Unfortunately they were told by the FIA to build a shit race tyre, which is what they have done. So that, combined with the DRS & KERS gives people something to bang on about. Which atleast serves to hide the fact that the integrity, soul and general whole purpose of F1 has been destroyed in the name of getting people with generally NFI to watch a race. They can basically take their crap tyres, their fake overtaking, their hopelessly compromised energy recovery systems & all the other junk & shove it.* *Subject to someone other than Ferrari, McLaren or Redbull winning. Which may happen before 2020, but probably not.

Given the stated kms I wouldnt be spending too much money on the motor. Just be aware the oil pump drive in the car is not as strong as a later model. So I wouldnt go doing a heap of 8000rpm clutch dump starts or bashing the rev limiter continuously. Have a good look at the harmonic balancer - make sure it is one piece. A failure there will result in an oil pump failure. It will be 20 years old so the rubber in them will have seen better days. In anycase treat it like it is - a 20 year old motor.

A few things. The quoted cost of the GTR's was affected by two things: 1. Freddo Gibson talking it up. 2. Electronics being massively expensive in the early 90's. The figure of $750k was never credible then, nor is it now. The taxis are currently being reengineered to try & get their cost down to under $300k - this is the Car of the future they keep banging on about. They look like they will fail in this endeavour which is a worry because the reduced costs are one of the most important reasons for doing all the work. RB26s did not require rebuilds for every race. Thing about it - with the boost & rev limits in place just about anyone could build a motor to survive those conditions. Nowadays with control cams, minimum component weights, maximum engine speeds, sequential gearboxes, much better ECU's etc etc the motors last longer. They dont perform anywhere near as well as the could, but they last longer. -
You mean the old oval shape with the three chicanes? I cant remember what year they had a massice start line shunt - there were only a handfull of cars left & Tyrrell (?) ended up with a bunch of points. Other than that the cars used to disappear into the pine forest before the inevitable happened & they blew their engines to a million pieces.

Yeah I used to watch it and think "Other than not turning up I wonder if Alan Jones could try any less?" Then sure as sht the next GP Eastlake would do the intro: "Alan cant be with us tonight." Gold.

Tomei make a little bit of electronics - you can plug it into the computer & it stops the hicas system from showing an error.

Sway Bar Opinions? R32 Gtr.
djr81 replied to Sportmax's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Yeah you wont go far wrong with Cusco. They are better than the Whiteline ones because they are both stiffer & lighter. THe only reason I run a front Whiteline sway bar is as near as I can tell it is a little softer than the Cusco. But there is not much in it. Hey, they may suit you just fine. -

All the torque split controller does is reduce the influence of lateral grip on the way the system works. Nissan programmed the system to reduce front torque when the car is cornering (relative to driving in a straight line) so it behaves more like a RWD & is perceived to be more fun on the road. There are gains to be made by changing this. Or in other words gains to be made by making the GTR behave less like a GTST. Due to them not running a differential (Ie they have a locked rear axle with a pinion, spool & nothing else) the V8's dont turn in at all well. Which is why the drivers have to carry so much brake into turns. So compaired to a V8 a GTR will turn in brilliantly. The amount of commonality between a Gibson GTR & a stocker is massively more than a V8 supercar & a VT. Group A cars had what the production cars had. That was, after all, the whole point. Actually the GTR had a heap of ballast as well. Does a completely different set of rules & many years of tyre development explain it away. Absolutely. The ATTESSA system is not the greatest in the world. It is, however, sufficiently useful to be more than worth the weight. Which is the point, after all. -
But why would you. I mean other than so you could boast you had done the stupidest conversion in history?

I used to love the Alan Jones pre race commentary. He would be reading the grid out & stumble over the names of all the back markers because, after all, who really gave a fk about the name of the ninth different pay driver in the Minardi for the year? Good work, good prep. Big Darryl Eastlake on the other hand was always a complete fkwit. Oh gees you can see the emotion written all over his helmet etc etc..
-
That would have been Wheels magazine. If you are really keen I can dig it out as I have them all stuffed in a cupboard at home. The Mp4/4 was probably one of the greatest/most dominant cars of all time. Just a shame the Brabham BMW it owed so much to was a total dog.

Yeah 1998 is where it is at. From memory Schumi tried to punch on with Coulthard after the Liberace? Dont hating on Damon, he was alright & the Jordon promo girlies were better than anything Force India has ever used. Help me out Baron, what year was it that Hakkinen did the epic over take move on Schumi - it was at Spa & must have been 1999 or there abouts?

Sway Bar Opinions? R32 Gtr.
djr81 replied to Sportmax's topic in Suspension, braking, tyres and drivetrain
Yes. Otherwise your car will be stiff in bump settings but relatively soft in roll. Which is not a very nice combination because it wont absorb road undulations very well nor probably corner as well as it could. Exactly. Although I would term it more so as less understeer. Not necessarilly as spring rates can be a bit of a personal preference thing. But I would say that they are pretty stiff in the overall scheme of things. For what it is worth mine are about half what the Apexi rates are. It does depend on alot of other things, however.
