Tarmac Rallying Perpetual Thread

Shit is this still going on? Hopefully once and for all... 1. The gearbox went in initially for financial reasons only. I don't care what anyone else thinks is the case. 2. After having driven both if I was allowed to choose I would pick the 32/33 no doubt. My reason would be simply because it is easier to drive than the 6 speed and its cheaper to maintain. I think both systems have their good and bad points from a performance view. I doubt my times would have been sweet F.A. different no matter which system I had in there. 3. I doubt there is a full running R34 drivetrain in tarmac out there anyways which is the funny part. Gearboxes are probably fine though but the rest is too hard to deal with. 4. I distinctly remember someone asking for a GTS4 diff during the event for a GTR. 5. Some people passing judgement should look closely in the mirror. 6. I'm over it and I'm going back to work. -

Run the R33 Woo - he still has that in the shed too (although I think it's missing some brake pads! LOL) -

My confusion came from my friendship with a number of the EMO boys. Forget the stroker issues - but the EMO's all seem to run around with different model diff's and most importantly the later model ones half run around with 5 speeds and half with 6 speeds. As far as I knew they were all sold with 6 speeds, but I have since found out that you can actually option a 5 speed through the RS spec of the EVO's so that explains that one. I had just thought if it was a factory gearbox for the car model then it was ok. Thinking on it further now I understand why this is stupid as with that logic I should be allowed to run an R35 DSG (and probably an R35 engine whilst I'm at it). -

Ok here's a couple more (and my last) vid's. I thought I drove these 2 pretty well. High Plains (the first stage I've ever "cleaned") Paloona (yeah it's not as good as YT's run but I thought it was ok!) And my crash on Mt Rowland. Watch for the fuel on the road after around 4.40 -

Steve/Kel, When I wrote that post it was before I had spoken to Steve on the boat. At that point the information I had been TOLD from Octogon was I was excluded due to the gearbox from a protest from Steve (along with some other things that were 100% legal on my car and not what was claimed to be on it by him). Post event we had an offical list of items that were to be checked for eligibility and none of those were checked - only my gearbox was which wasn't even on that list. Now I have accepted 100% that Steve never protested after our chat, just as I had already accepted 100% that my exclusion was just and fair according to the rules from the very moment I was informed. But Steve did contact and call everyone who would listen to advise them that he was going to protest should he have finished in 4th and so that is probably why I was informed it came from his protest (and probably why the gearbox was checked in the first place). I'm personally done with it. I do this sport because I love it - not for recognition or to sell or gain anything. I don't even care if I come first or last. I just love doing things like this in the car I love and hanging out with cool people that are at these events. I will hopefully be back next year with a new and improved and 100% legal car. As I have said I thought it was this year so I will doubley make sure of it for the big one in 2011. Be cool - keep smiling - and wait for some more of my cool footage to be posted shortly! -

Thats great footage of just how bad that fuel was. The corner where Kim went off is where the fuel spill started. The road was "fine" until that point. -

I quite like Queenstown. Reminded me of a Dutton event! Hellyer Gorge is my new fav though. It just flows beautifully. Paloona was pretty epic too but that might just be because it was the stage I had the biggest crack at. But Riana can GAGF'd! LOL -

My first video is done. Moriarty - this was our first "competative" stage (was the 4th stage of the day but the other 3 were essentially non-timed). Good times!! -

Chris was awesome. Not only did he fix the car up sweetly but did a great job for a guy thats supposed to be a driver - not a Nav. he had no idea on what Rally notes even looked like before we got to Tassie. And one thing people might not know is that after I hit the tree RIGHT NEXT TO WHERE HE WAS SITTING, I was ready to pull out but it was him that kicked me in the ass and convinced me to get back in the car and keep on going. Absolute champion. -

Bris - its all about the year model. First Z Tune was sold 2005. Cut off for Early Modern is end of 2002. So if Autech started selling R34 GTR ATTKD specials before the end of 2002 then it seems one would technically be within the rules. The thing with the Caterham R500 is I think they may knock back your entry due to safety concerns. It's an invitational event and I think there are some area's like that where they draw the line (Only Stu will be able to confirm that though). -

I'll say it again - I'm 100% cool with the decision. I was no faster for the mod so I feel internally that I did a great job - but the decision is the right one. It was my own stupid fault and one day the shoe may be on the other foot so I wouldn't want things to be different just because it's me this time. I had an EPIC 6 days in my car in the most INSANE conditions at times and the story I have left to tell was unimaginable 2 weeks ago. And just wait til I get the chance to upload some in-car footage. You will see just how stupid we all are. LOL I still can not believe we are allowed to do this shite! And I will be back again for more of it. -

Oh - and well done to Jeff and Nerida on their gold plate. After seeing how damn hard it was just to finish one event getting one of those has to be as hard - if not harder - that getting on the podium. Especially if everyone of those events you are driving them at podium getting speeds. Not bad for grandparents. -

Ok everyone - lets not get overly excited. I have copped the ruling square on the chin. It was a 100% honest mistake on my part as I thoght the 5 speed was legal. Let me explain why. Some of the rules state: SR4. Diff/Clutch and Flywheel The fly wheel is free providing that the original dimensions are retained and the replacement is of ferrous material. Clutch disc is free, but must retain the original number of friction plates. The differential action is free providing that no external control of the action is possible. The manufacturer original ratio and housing must be retained. Despite what that says I can legally run a Nismo copper mix Twin plate and Nismo front and rear LSD's because they are "Nissan factory options" 13. Bodywork (except Showroom) All body work must remain original. Unless freedoms otherwise stated in these rules. The fitting of under body protections is authorised, provided that these are removable and which are designed exclusively and specifically in order to protect the following parts: engine, radiator, suspension, gearbox, fuel tank, transmission, exhaust. 14. Spoilers and Skirts (except Showroom) Aerodynamic aids must be as originally fitted to the vehicle in production however front spoilers, rear spoilers and side skirts may be made from alternative materials but must retain the exact original shape and dimension. Original fittings must be used. M2. Bodywork Alternative materials are permitted for the following panels provided they are of the exact same external shape as the original panel: • Front mudguards • Nose panel • Boot lid or rear hatch • Bonnet Original fittings must be retained (e.g. hinges / bonnet locks) The minimum specifications of alternative materials shall be respected: • Aluminium-1.25mm thick • Fibres/reinforced plastic 3mm thick Again - despite that rule I am allowed to run my Z-Tune body kit because it is a Nismo factory option. The gearbox rule states M19. Gearbox / Transmission / Final Drive • The casings and housings must be the same as originally fitted to the vehicle. • The number of forward gears must be standard; otherwise the internal components are free. • The gear change mechanisms must be as originally specified for the vehicle, other than that shortened or ‘quick’ shifters which do not result in modification to the casings or housings are permitted. Sequential shift mechanisms are not permitted. My mistake was that I understood the rules were if you could buy something from Nissan/Nismo that were built for a GT-R you could legally run with it. I have had this further clariffied now and I am 100% happy with the decision that has been reached. Would have been nice for them to actually check the list of "post scrutiny" items on all podium finishers though as I know I wouldn't have been the only car excluded - although I would have been the only one excluded for a non peformance enhancing item. There were apparently I'm told a zillion rumours about my car all week about other stuff, but I have NEVER owned a 2.8L engine even when I ran the car as a Z-Tune last year, and the 2860-5's turbo's came off at the start of the year when I had to run the 3" exhaust at Wrestpoint (because anyone with brains will know -5's would suck balls with a 3" exhaust so the N1's are an 11ty times better option). The reason for the 5 speed was simple. When I first got the car I kept breaking the shift drums and each time it was a $5K repair. As it was I could only buy Supra parts since Nissan would only supply a full box for $12K. I'm not 100% convinced that the Supra parts are the same as everyone who repairs their R34 boxes seem to continue to have issues like I did. So I swap to the "cheap" option. It was only a financial decision - not a performance one (although the 5 speed was better for Dutton stuff but the 6 speed would be MUCH better for Targa stuff). The stupid thing is I still have my 6 speed sitting in my garage next to my -5 turbo's, Tien suspension and 3.5" exhaust so if I knew it was illegal I would have put the 6 speed back in again! Anyhoo - onto bigger and better things. The question now is do I rebuild it as another N1 or do I now go and build an R34 ATTKD GT-R. Check out it's specs! Here are the highlights. Thank god for in-car video footage. Someone stole 30s off of me simply because "someone" decided my time couldn't possibly be right! Hopefully I can get it back and they can decide that the time they actually recorded me getting was infact correct. -

Well I don't have a 56.6L tank so it better not be 1L/km or else I'm not getting through Arrowsmith! LOL -

I work on 0.6L/km competative and 0.15L/km touring. I'm not 100% sure how accurate that is going to be but I figure its a safe guide. -

Haha - no. But its what? 61 hard kms to Mt Arrowsmith - 56kms in the stage - and then around 100kms to the refill point at lunch. So Ideally I'd fill up once half way through Arrowsmith! LOL But TO BE SAFE I'm going to want 20L before and 20L after (although 20L in Queenstown will work just as well). -
