Tarmac Rallying Perpetual Thread

I agree on the NSX - I used to own one before the GT-R and before I recently decided to turn the R34 into a Targa car I looked at the possibility of doing an NSX instead since they are eligable for classc as of 2009. Great little car but they do have a few little issues and they are also a car that can bite (when they let go they GOOOO) -

As a side note - if anyone needs any "stuff" (I know I need a suit) - there could be a good chance to get something cheap from here: http://www.graysonline.com.au/sale.asp?SALE_ID=70314 -

Yeah there's 3 on carales for +$100K. His plan wasn't to buy an actual 22b but to build a replica from a cheap base but heck if he can get a genuine one at a stupid price I'm sure he'd consider it (although it'd be a shame to bugger a genuine one up with a cage etc). -

Just spoke to my Dutton co-pilot (Blaise) who just returned from that pesky bit of tarmac otherwise known as the Nurburgring. And it seems he' suffering from the same problem as I had after going there in now wanting to step up to tarmac rallies in order to try and see if he can replicate the experience he got over there. He wants to go back to his roots when we first met and was driving an imported WRX STi RA, but this time look at building a 22b replica as a tarmac car which should be sweet. It'll probably take him a good 12 months or more to get the project together but it will be tops to have him along playing in the future too (and good if I can get 12 months or so experience up on him to start with! LOL). -
Bentley Continental Twin Turbo W12 goodness (but slower than an F430 in roll on drag race...... apparently)

James I've been thinking that should be our Targa livery (as my daughter would love it!)

Of course you can just do the practise day. But as far as the SAU Club Championship goes only the Sunday counts obviously (since there is no timing on the Saturday).

Nice one. God that'd be a lot of fun. Although I was expecting to hear that Deano had signed up for the 1st R8 GT3 in the country. -

Hey Ben I watched your George Town prologue footage on the weekend - geez that looks like a whole lot of fun. But also really suprising that it is allowed! LOL - I just can't imagine anyone on the main-land letting people do that. Although someone needs to teach you how to edit your footage - the 2min wait at the start of each one is unnecessary -
As a side point the biggest loser from last night was Alonso IMO. Because tell me right now if you were the owner of one of the big teams who'd you rather have come into you team when a spot opens up - Vettel or Alonso..... I think we all jus saw our next Ferrari driver and that whinging pom better hurry up and win a title before he gets there or else he just may miss his chance.

You're from Perth as well aren't you Brockaz. I just laugh that everytime someone from Perth does anything you all feel a national shrine needs to be built or something. I know Steve well enough to call him a mate and I'm not at all green and I am truely impressed with Steves abilities (I know anyone who was able to consistantly beat Blaise head to head over there in their EVO battles must have some real tallent not to mention having seen him drive the last few years in Duttons) - all I was trying to do was point out that the Targa West result doesn't yet fully prove the CARS potential in these style of events given what I mentioned. Steve and I actually booked out AHG for an afternoon earlier this year and I saw first hand how much prep work he did on that car to get it as good as he could and I'm SURE he put the same amount of effort into the actual roads being used simply because he could reccy them on a regular basis with ease. My point is that so far we have seen a great result in Perth but we've also seen a very ordinary result in Tassy so until such time that we see the car in the hands of someone like Steves ability and preparation in conditions like found in Tassy and the Vic mountain series we still don't know how great it is because there are still too many unanswer questions. But until such time comes you W.A. guys can all queue up to blow Steve all you like even though none of you are going to stack up well against Kira

All good mate - I'll sus out the options for Launceston but I figure there isn't the panic there that there is for say Strahan. (Which I'm happy to know doesn't effect me for next year) I'm guessing the best thing for Targa Tas is to get there on the Saturday right (Friday night boat) and have a look around for the weekend before all the offical stuff starts on Monday? And also for Targa Wrest Point getting there Friday morning should be fine yeah - there's nothing other than Scrutiny on the Friday and there should be plenty of time to get from the boat to Hobart and have all that done on Friday. There is no Friday prologue or anything planned for running orders for it is there? (Stu!?) I'm just trying to book all the boats, accomm and everything as I've been a classic in the past for not booking things in time for events and being left with a serious lack of options. -

Bris - don't worry mate James and I have plans for several pre-event training runs to get a grasp on things. We won't be rocking up to the 1st stage of Wrest Point Targa with no idea where the ON swtich is on the Terratrip and wondering what 100 L3½ • R5½ OnC 〉4½ • L4½ Imm R5 Then R4 Imm Long L4 Then ! R3 150 L3½ • R4½ 100 L5 Imm R4 is all supposed to mean! I've always been pretty thorough with my preparation - hell I started running my own DECA days to get more competition time for the Duttons - and I won't be going into these things completely unsure you can bet on that. The great thing is there are plenty of people on here that are helping me out already which is more than I got when I first started at club level stuff so I'm confident we'll be right come Jan -

Ok - entry application forms and fee's have been faxed off for Wrest Point Targa and Targa Tassie Rookie 09 Fingers crossed we get accepted. The car went in this morning to get the new cage and other safety stuff fitted and things like the Terratrip installed. Still plenty to do though between now and Jan. One question I do have for you regular Targa guru's is accommodation. Can that be booked in now (aka do you stay in one central spot for the event) or do we have to wait for the event schedule to be realesed to know where we need to be? But I'd hate to miss out on a bed in the "place to be" if it can be helped. -

Crazy quick Not crazy quick I think what Ben is suggesting is it's better to start with something closer to the latter to gain experience before you try the top one. -
Fanboys of the world unite!! But before you all run off and have you're big man love orgy just consider a couple of things. 1. Steve was very thorough in his prep for Targa West and had done it before in the EVO but he knows those roads pretty well as they are in his back door. 2. Targa West is a different rally to the ones over east for a few reasons. Firstly the speeds. Watch that McNess video again (and yep - balls of steel) and then watch this one from Targa and this one from Mt Buller Targa West is a significantly different style of rally that probably suits the GT-R (and Porka and Lambo) power well - compared to say the EVO's and STi's. But the GT-R might struggle a bit more on tighter / twister stuff and it really might struggle with the weight on the hill climb events (although he said he might bring it to Buller in Nov so we'll find out then I guess) 3. The stages in Targa West are pretty short. The major impact this has is that his "wow he did it on street tyres" is no where near as effected as it will be once stages start going beyond 5mins in duration. Once they get hot they might really start to struggle for grip so when you get to the +20km long stages they might be found out. And if you look at the longer stages from Perth like Western Range he was behind the other cars on them. Although again I think for Targa Tas, Mt Buller etc he can run smaller wheel and hence get better rubber (AASA rules as opposed to CAMS) but I'm not 100% sure on that. There' no question it was a brilliant effort by both the car and driver but we need to see a little bit more before you all get too carried away.

But isn' there bugger all rallies left running under sCAMS? Other than Targa West - which I must say after watching some in-car footage of Steve I almost have to admit that was a bit fast at times - is there any other rallies still running with them? Certainly Targa Tas, Wrest Point, Mt Buller and Lake Mountain are all running under AASA now.
