  1. Markos did you change Nina's diet, or did it stay the same?
  2. IIFYM is to obsessive for me, I go by calories and making sensible choices (i.e not eating my calories in 'whatever' purely for the sake of it). Still working so far, but finding it harder to avoid processed carbs etc now that I'm living with the mrs.
  3. fark smith machine squats - tried them once, felt totally unnatural and could not get as low as I do with a barbell! Seems to be popular in my gym though, that and smith machine bench press.
  4. It's funny, Royal Purple have a printed extract of that article that their distributors used to hand out - my local mechanic tried to put that one on me - when I mentioend that the testing method was disproved he then tried to say that they had to say that for fear of litigation
  5. See there you go again with the 'burnouts' thing again. That must be why no HSV clubs do track days etc etc. I think you need to get off your high horse about GT-Rs. Funny, I'd make the same comments you made about the GT-R about my LS powered Commodore. That's a really cool story about what your builder reckons, but again it's contrary to the majority. I even deconstructed your so called "evidence", unrelated material, advertorials and backwater forums do not a compelling case make. I've said SEVERAL TIMES that nearly every engine that is being revved hard has at least a valve spring upgrade, and doubly so if cammed or using forced induction. Again the only issues like what you claim are common that I've seen were in a VX LS1 that was on its last legs from abuse. It's not personal attacks or denigration, it's the fact that your arguments are half arsed. It's becoming fairly apparent that a lot of you have never driven a late model HSV, hence the stereotyping of them as a bogan skid pig rig.
  6. ok to start with your links xgtrx: the first couple are specifically about EARLY LS1s which had known issues. Re read my earlier posts where I mention that most of those engines in Aussie made cars were replaced under warranty, or had these modifications performed. One of the articles actually mentions how the LS2 has an improved design for extended high rpm and high g force operation. The On All Cylinders link is trying to sell Moroso and Joe Gibbs products lol (actually reads like an advertorial). The Pro Touring forum link is talking about drag engines with bigger ring gaps than standard, and what a PCV system actually does, and the methods of bypassing it for drag cars. You would have been better off trying to find actual service bulletins from GM, or citing one of the major LS based forums rather than some of these backwaters Google has found for you. I should mention another important point - most people with a brain in their head who have modified or race orientated LS engines are running 10w40 or 10w60 grade oil, not factory fill 5w30. I run 10w60 in my modified engine, 0 oil usage and no oil on the throttle body etc etc. If these engines were really so hard on oil at high RPM, how come so many drifters are running them these days? and I'm talking LS3 / L98 etc, not el cheapo wrecker spec LS1s. I'm going to take the word of the guy who modifies and tunes my engine over the word of 'some guy' on the internet. He would ask me if I was having a f**king laugh if I were to show him that wall of gibberish. If I start seeing oil accumulation, I'll fit a catch can. If not, factory PCV system will stay intact. Gonna have to try a bit harder there - wall of text posts won't deter the likes of me! You can extrapolate whatever 'results' or inferences you like from the Road and Track review, fact is there is bugger all in it between the 40k cheaper ZL1, and the dearer ZR1 would pump it. Unfortunately GM do not sell a car that is right on the money with an R35. I do have high hopes for the VF though. Birds: you are completely right - the VN Group A homogolation model was around $60k or so in 1990 dollars. The GT-R was around 110k or so off the top of my head. Also back then Holden did not have GM's engine range to choose from, and their cars had to be capable of running crappy 91 octane unleaded, putting them at a further disadvantage. Nissan also built the R32 around Group A regs and the GT-R with that sole purpose in mind in a much bigger car market than Australia. Even in Japan they dominated so much that they ironically contributed to their own demise.
  7. The ZR1 is faster around the Nurburgring, just throwing it out there, proper manual and RWD. It's generally compared favourably to McLarens, Ferraris etc (at least in the video reviews I've seen). It's a more expensive car though, so I mention the more accurate comparison for price tag and what you're likely to be looking at as an alternative in Australia. I suggest you check out that Road and Track review I linked. 2 seconds on a lap for a 40 odd grand $ saving over the GT-R, and again, RWD, with a 6 speed automatic (a beefed up version of what's in every VE V8 actually). I do have to say though, I've watched a few of these reviews, and they all mention a common theme of GT-R and understeer / video game like drive to the ZR1/ZL1 requiring more driver input but being more rewarding etc. I know this sounds a bit tangential, but the ZL1 is the same platform as the VE/VF, with different body styling and less doors. I really hope they do a VF GTS vs R35 comparison when they are released EDIT: I'm enjoying the debate actually, generally on the V8 forums when someone starts talking about Euros etc, the conversation is a lot more level headed though! Yes there are lots of LS powered drift cars now, I did not even bother venturing FURTHER into that particular argument with XGTRX.
  8. xgtrx: as opposed to your stereotyping, generalisations and conjecture? "durr my motor blew up must be a design fault with every LS engine", I asked you to prove it, you cannot. I specifically asked my guy from a well known workshop who said your claims were bogus (and they sell /maintain/modify a LOT of LS engines). I also couldn't find any information about these supposed 'design flaws'. I also provided a review from a well known magazine that showed a car which has the same drivetrain and body configuration as the upcoming VF GTS vs the R35 which supported the original point of the V8, RWD manual car being the more 'fun' to drive (really that is a subjective measure), also very close in terms of performance. Your attempts to save face are amusing though. to buy a late model HSV to do burnouts in like a moron says it all about the driver, not the car. These things have lot of technology and serious suspension / braking, but again for the pricepoint you can't compare track performance to a car that costs as much as some Porsches to own. On another note, the HSV / LS orientated communities are some of the most open minded that I've come across in a lot of forum lurking and posting I owned a heavily modified AWD R32 for 4 years, and almost all of my mates own and drive imports, so I've been around them a LOT. Would I get another one? Definitely not unless it had an LS engine in it. Nothing beats instant torque and response, not to mention that glorious sound! Wardski: I think posting this thread in an R35 subforum is a bit of a laugh in itself
  9. ^that is why I keep dishing it out to you. What 70 year old design? What utter BS. I think that you also fail to realise that many current HSV owners could afford GT-Rs or Euros, but prefer their HSVs. You're persisting with this idiotic 'argument', that I can only put down to you trolling. I'm sure the several hundred people who've put down deposits on the new GTS would rather not own a 20 year old grey thrashed out import with a wound back speedo and unknown history from Japan. Though ironically your posting style matches the same sort of person you try to portray Holden / HSV owners as. You're claiming to not have any allegiance to a particular brand, yet you're coming off as extremely one eyed towards Nissan.
  10. i hear that fat loss is directly proportionate to the amount of squats completed
  11. I don't know why you own one then given how you bag them out constantly based on crap you make up, yet make out like your R33 is god's gift to motoring I doubt your integrity because of your rubbish comments about LS engines, as well as trying to imply that every Holden / HSV owner drives like a f**kwit. Not to mention your endless fanboi comments bagging out anything locally made. As they say, if the label fits, wear it - you mention track usage, I mention that when using an R35 for its intended purpose on a racetrack, then it should be compared to the GM equivalents, not the base model V8. I could spam links to ZR1 and ZL1 reviews, this one seems to be pretty even handed (and again the VF GTS will basically be a 4 door Camaro ZL1). Perhaps to compare to a ZR1 is unfair, as the ZR1 is a class above the GT-R in terms of pricing and performance, so I'll stick to the ZL1 (also $40k cheaper than a GT-R). The performance figures are proven btw. http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-reviews/car-comparison-tests/2012-chevrolet-camaro-zl1-vs-2013-nissan-gt-r-premium The review basically says that whilst the performance is quite similar, the Camaro is just the more fun car to drive (let alone cheaper to own and run) People like you really need to get out of this ridiculous mindset that US / Aussie made = slow and unreliable, because it's simply not true when comparing apples to apples.
  12. no I was talking about real world results - Road and Track showed the ZL1 Camaro as being about .4 seconds slower than a 2012 GT-R on a racetrack for example. They're not dreaming about 4 sec 0-100 times - I'm really starting to doubt that you ever owned an LS2 given that if you had a cammed and stalled one it should have been giving a similar level of performance. if anything we should be supporting our local product - if Holden goes, so does Toyota and poof 50000 jobs gone.
  13. yeah it was part of this workout dubbed '300', basically lots of DL, pushups, pullups and squat presses (with some ab exercises and shoulder db presses thrown in too).
  14. LOL if you truly think that the people who go around spending 12k+ on a PD blower are the same who go racing on the street, you could not be more wrong. I put a max torque cam in mine because it spends 99% of its time between 1500rpm and 5500. Same with a blower. Usable power. Not to say an R35 is laggy, can't comment. They're far from useless cars, just in stock form they are nothing on a GT-R on a racetrack, and only a wanker would try to draw a comparison. If you want to go down that route, you have to compare to the ZR1 Corvette (incidentally the ZR1 is a faster car than the R35 lol), or ZL1 Camaro (which the VF GTS has the same drivetrain as) which are actually positioned as R35 level cars rather than Commodores. Also note that both are using PD superchargers It's also why I keep saying that the real alternative to an R35 is only the VF GTS due to it having the advanced drivetrain and brakes over the lesser models.
  15. did 50x60kg today, left me red faced and breathless!
  16. anyone with a positive displacement supercharger would beg to differ on that one (or cam setup for max torque)
  17. being a tool is a mentality, not a model of car, seen enough flogs in all brands to know this, I've even seen this behavior from an R35 driver! you just see a lot more SS's on the roads. Incidentally I can't say I've seen anywhere near the amount of douchey driving from HSV owners.
  18. whatever makes you feel superior Try going for a drive in one that has the tyres and suspension to match the power, you will probably be surprised.
  19. Creatine obviously.
  20. I eat wholegrain bread a couple of times a week, feels good man
  21. GOMAD birds? haha
  22. That's basically what I saw. Don't like the cult like mentality, or how they try to claim that they are the 'elite' of fitness. Most of the people I know who've done really well at it were already really strong and in good condition, but the rate of injury among regular people trying to do it is also offputting. I see the same thing with the "MMA"/kickboxing types with their extreme cardio group training. It gets them really well conditioned (though most do not seem to have the right diet anyway), but a lot of injuries. Ironically, they're usually the same people who try to tell me that "doing weights won't help you lose weight".
  23. jangles: I'm still at 120kg and losing weight down to my 100kg target, so that's what I base my protein calculations off. Yeah sure I can eat a big steak and get half of what I'm after, but given that I am trying to keep total calories down as well, it does make it more difficult. Generally I eat beef, chicken and kangaroo on a regular basis. The amount of protein consumed per meal for it to be absorbed by the body is a whole other thing too. Generally for me I have a protein shake an hour and a half before training, and one straight after. It's not like I skip a main meal. I'm also not keen enough to plan every meal weeks or months in advance, but I'm sure it probably could be done without supplementing any protein. I looked into IIFYM, but it's a little too anal for me. I like to get multiple opinions and then try out different things - I really don't see the big deal with discussing options that some of you more experienced guys don't agree with. I'm sure that the Crossfitters would be keen to tell you how you're doing it all wrong for example. Does that make the PTC style of training any better or worse than a proper Crossfit box? Depends on a number of factors according to the trainee IMO. I do however know how much hyperbole and utter crap surrounds the world of supplements though - for example, raspberry ketones touted as a weight loss supplement were scientifically shown to be completely f**king useless at this. It does not stop the local supplement shop touting them as 'the next big thing' for weight loss. Same with a lot of the 'testosterone boosters' etc. I think most of us in here are smart enough to know that most pro bodybuilders are cycling steroids as well as training HARD, as well as the pro powerlifters etc. I do agree that there are no shortcuts, otherwise we'd all be swole. Will watch that doco mentioned earlier, looks interesting.
  24. Mildura Powerlifting Club, and no idea - I'd have to ask one of the members that I know. I've had another gym reccommended to me by a Crossfitter I know, except the whole Crossfit / Paleo thing just isn't my scene.
  25. Markos - not a single member of our local powerlifting club that I have seen has that kind of aesthetic physique - quite the opposite, so that's why that kind of got stuck in my head in the first place. Look at strongmen for another example - many of them do look quite fat despite being insanely strong, Derek Poundstone being a notable exception. I realise that unlike us, you are a professional, and dislike being told you're wrong, but surely it is best to keep an open mind! I can't really do much with my routine right now due to the limitations of going to a commercial gym and because my gymbros are not interested in doing any structured programs. I'm still making progress, and they really encourage me to go harder, so I'm happy with that for now. I have protein shakes to keep up my low carb cut, because I actually like the taste and as a replacement for eating cans of tuna / chicken breast all the time, because it bores me. If I could recall some of the studies about ingesting 1g/lb or so of protein a day, I'd link them. Also cheaper or the same price as eating regular protein sources for snacks (eggs being the one possible exception). If there is any empirical evidence to suggest they are detrimental to health or wellbeing, I'm all ears. $50 for a month's worth of 'snacks', is not a huge expense IMO, especially given that I no longer smoke or drink every week. While I'm still a beginner, what harm can trying out various things do to judge their effects for myself?
