Cheers boys! Christian, it cost a fair bit to put right (but would've cost even more had I bought parts from here instead of the States) but it was fairly cheap to acquire. 1 owner car with books, so that gave me some confidence. And yep you definitely feel the 5.1 metres and 2 tonnes when cornering, but it's sooo relaxing to roll to work and back! Yeah Nick, it's a '99 740iL with the M62 4.4. Like the S52 they can have some Vanos issues but otherwise pretty solid unit as long as it gets the proper maintenance. Ah ok, I have seen quite a few converted ones on Carsales. I know a little about the E36 M3s as I have been very close to buying one in the past, just couldn't find the right one. I can totally relate to the idea of acquiring cars that one used to want as a teenager too. The E38 and the GTR are two of those cars, for me. So I consider myself lucky!

Very nice collection mate Still have a big soft spot for the E36 M3. Yours is a 3.2 (Evo) yeah? A 1996, judging by the series 1 grille but series 2 rims, clear indicators and Estoril colour. Props if it's the 6 speed manual. Here's my other contribution. 0-100km/h in 7.0 flat, not bad for 1970kg!

- How will the various functions / capabilities of ECUs change (if at all) with increasingly complicated vehicles coming out of the factory (e.g. from R34 to R35 GT-R; advent of variable valve/camshaft timing; drive-by-wire throttles; CAN BUS systems developed by the vehicle manufacturer)? E.g. does this mean owners have to opt for more capable (read: expensive) ECUs to work with these modern vehicles, as opposed to piggyback options, or vice versa (is there less scope for ECUs with multiple parameters with modern cars)? - How would JEM plot the various ECUs on the market according to cost vs. capability, and hence which ECUs fall into the resultant quadrants, i.e. high capability, high cost (professional / overkill); high capability, relatively low cost (bargain); low capability, high cost (rip-off); low capability, low cost (on a budget). - Any emerging trends in ECU design, e.g. advances in logging, ability to adjust settings on the fly for extended track work? - Why is it important to have someone who is trained on my specific ECU work on my car? If I take it somewhere else, "what could possibly go wrong?" - Any interesting anecdotes about ECU setups - any catastrophic failures from a POS ECU? Any situations where an ECU meant the difference between winning a race or retiring, etc etc -

Yeah I mentioned comprehensive insurance as well. Just not sure if being on a dirt road would make them look the other way. Would also need to confirm that it's still a public road and not a private road.

Good on you for realising you needed to cool your heels. Compared to your wife and your family, it is just a car. Everything can be fixed, focus on the best case scenario. Todd will take care of it.

Probably because it has been receiving a lot of attention lately from the cops with impromptu defect stations due to residents' complaints about cars and bikes tearing through there. During the day / afternoon it shouldn't be too much of an issue. It is a fantastic piece of road. The surface can be a little bumpy in some places and while no public road is the right place for an all out thrash, Nasho is nice at six tenths speed just taking in the scenery and listening to the RB sounds anyway.

Sounds good Josh! Jason, the main road through is fine for lowered cars like mine, you just have to slow down at certain points in the heavily forested areas as there are a couple of parts of the road that have subsided and you can bottom out or scrape if you hit them at speed. Edit: by "subsided" I just mean it feels like a rough expansion joint in the road. Stick to the speed limit and you're sweet. No major potholes or anything sinister. Except maybe cops

Then you just pull over like Josh said and reverse however many kilometres it is back up to the sealed section I sympathise, but once it gets to the point where you think, shit, this is too much, I would've stopped and let everyone else pass.

Jun, we met briefly at the recent Tech arvo. I obviously wasn't there yesterday, but from what I understand it indeed wasn't an official SAU event. Official SAU events are invariably covered by CAMS insurance. I appreciate that the "off road" section of the cruise was a "surprise" and therefore you had no warning of the turn off onto that road, however, how was it not possible to STOP the car once it became obvious that the road was not suitable for a low car? I know what it's like to be in a line of cars on a cruise and there is expectation to "keep going" with faith that the lead car knows where on earth they're going and what they're doing, but unfortunately it seems to me that the responsibility of where the car goes, ultimately lies with the driver of said car. I obviously know this VS2 personally and it is a shmick car and wish you all the best with the repairs; it could not be in better hands than JLM's. But I don't really see how one could place the blame (or cost) on another party in this case; as unfortunate as the circumstances may be. You might be better off looking into your comprehensive insurance as a solution. Then again being an unsealed road they will probably look the other way.

Thanks to the organisers for putting this on, great hanging out with a top bunch of people and learning a lot of insights from Theo. It was somewhat sobering hearing about how stringent some of the guidelines / regulations are, and really does make you stop and think a bit more about your next mod. -

Spotted KAIJU going north over the Harbour Bridge yesterday arvo! Great pics everyone. Jason you got some great ones of mine. Also like Sammi D's shots while we were rolling. Yeah the hillclimb and descent into Megalong Valley is pretty spectacular. The shadows over the road make it harder to spot the divots and dips in the road though! -
