G'day Prank, I have a pair of late model R33 GTSt seats I am not using. I'm not sure what they are worth though. Munro.
-
G'day Grepin, Manta Racing Services at Richmond is fixing the R34.I use Steve Cramp to do all my suspension work as he has lots of experience with circuit racing(he is a racer himself), & he also rebuilds my gearboxs & diffs. He is revalving the Bilsteins & fitting softer rate springs so it rides better & has more mechanical grip on bumpy roads.(which I allways seem to be driving on!) The only spare seats I have are std GTSt ones which you already have.A GTR seat would be perfect as they sit a lot lower.Mark maybe able to help. Have fun at the track.Dont do too many laps in one go or you will hurt your car. Regards, Munro.

Does anyone know of any Honda S2000 with a turbo coversion? I know there is a turbo kit available for them, but I was wondering if anyone in Australia has done it yet.
-
Go Keir! Good on him.He deserves it.Most guys would have bailed out after all the hassles he has had, but now he is the fastest again. He uses a mix of 98 & Elf turbomax fuel.At the track he fits race wheels with Nittos on them. They are not street legal, but if he did get pulled over they would be the least of his worries! Marios car is awesome. When he gets it sorted & running to full potential he will be very hard to beat.I hope I get a chance to run into the nines before he returns. In the meantime, Keir has the fastest GTR in australia & he drives it home afterward!!! Cool, we really do have RH9 GTRs in Adelaide. Caution ; GTRing is addictive. :burnout:

Cool with me. Should have my suspension detuned by then. I am totally sick of race track suspension & am getting the R34 fixed so it rides a bit better. Had a great cruise with the pulsar guys & gals on Sunday. Went down to Victor again(28 cars) then back via Normanville. The back way on Range road is awesome.Stayed with the pack for a good while, then Wade(M3) & I hammered through the 95km sweepers at the top doing almost double that! Sick road. Dyno day was great (SS ute made 235rwkw!!!) but sad to miss Keir's 9.74 @ 144mph pass at the test & tune. SA takes back the Fastest GTR title from Mario - Alright.:uh-huh: Can't wait to get my Holinger & race him. Will need a bit of practice though, as only driven it 3 times this year! Great to see so many Skylines at the dyno day. Where are all the GTRs??? Cheers.

Who's blown their RB engine and why?
Munro replied to Freebaggin's topic in General Automotive Discussion
At the 4 6 & rotary nationals in Feb this year, I blew up my RB26 engine in the R33 GTR.It had around 340 rwkw using bolt ons like HKS 2540s,FMIC,etc, but the engine itself was untouched. I did 2 back to back runs, which was silly cause it was too hot & the oil system must not have been able to keep up. It ran 11.5 & 11.6 and on the second run developed a loud rattle. When we pulled the engine down, the no. 4 conrod bearing was completely missing except for a wafer thin bit left welded to the crank! It was amazing the whole lot didn't let go through the traps. Also the crank was bent 2 thou & one of the pistons had been bouncing off the head.Keir wilson(R32 GTR 10.5fame) bought this engine, rebuilt it and ran 10.6 at drag combat with it!! So, providing they dont throw the rods out of the block, they can be rebuilt quite easily. On the same day in Feb, Keir was not so lucky with his R32.Oil starvation through the traps welded the crank to the block & KABLOOEEE. I remember grabing Brenton's Adelaide Clutch ute & hooking down to help him.One of the safety guys came over & passed me a handful of bits off the track. One of the bits was a bit of the block with san (part of the nissan) on it! What a mess.Other than the Head the whole thing was scrap metal. Now we both have OS 3 litre engines with larger, baffled sumps. Hope it dosen't happen again, but when you rev over 9000 rpm nothing lasts forever. :flamed: -
No. That TD06 car belongs to Doug Dinan.I have driven it though. 9500rpm 1st,2nd,&3rd & it flies.Should of seen the grandma on the sidewalk jumping over the fence to avoid the blur!Probably thought it was a jet landing or something! The TD06s dont come on boost till around 6000rpm so you have to rev the hell out of it to get a useful power band. His car was the inspiration for mine. Although I seem to have lost the plot somewhere along the way! My car is on page 26 of HPI no.24 & page 60 of Zoom no. 54. Due to the 3 litre capacity & smallish? 2835R turbos it comes on much earlier(around 4500rpm) & the push in the back is awesome. Doug's car has just had a fresh engine build by Adelaide Engine Developments so I'll have to watch out next time I run into him on the street with my R33!!! HaHa:uh-huh: Doug is a helicopter pilot so he is really good at low flying. Another mate, Kier Wilson, has also had an OS 3 litre engine fitted to his R32 GTR so Adelaide certainly has some sick GTRs around the place.Looking forward to summer. It will be good to get these 3 GTRs together for some WRX hunting.:shake: Munro.

Yep, I do drive my R34 that hard. It's the only way to get it off the line properly without bogging.Check out the Jap guys. You always hear them popping on the rev limiter before they launch.:burnout: Go hard or Go home. With the R33(OS 3 Litre engine) I sit on 9000 rpm for at least 5 seconds before launch to build up the boost.Any 4WD with a small capacity turbo engine needs revs to launch hard. They don't have much bottom end torque, so if you come off the clutch too early you bog the engine, lose torque, & lose time. It is much easier to launch a V8 because they have so much torque. My old HJ holden ute (350 chev) used to launch at 4-4500rpm, run a 1.4 60ft, & 10.1 @ 133 mph. Also most V8s use a trans & torque convertor which multiplies the torque & literally slingshots the car off the line. We are doing it the hard way with Hi-tech, multivalve, turbocharged, small capacity engines - & using solid clutches & manual gearboxs plus hard street suspension/steet tyres. It is much harder than old school drag racing, but it is a challenge, and it is great fun.Dropping the clutch at full revs, changing 4 or 5 gears, keeping the engine on boost, and all the while trying to keep the car off the wall is very entertaining! There is no doubt that V8s are king of competition drag racing, but you try and drive a 10sec V8 car on the street reliably. This is where Hi-tech comes into it's own. They handle well, go like stink, behave on the street in traffic,& have all the creature comforts.Go skylines!!! :uh-huh:

Tyres again - Formula R's, Yoko A032R's & the like
Munro replied to whatsisname's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Hey Matt, How you doing? I tried the RE540s Bridgestones but didn't like them. I bought 4 255/40/17 Toyo RA1s for the R33 & they handle extemely well but I have had trouble hooking up with my 3 litre engine. They are currently off the rims(being polished) & I have 4 Nitto Extreme 555R 275/40/17s coming from Jap. The extra height/width should help me get off the line. I run 255/40/17 on the SS ute & was going to use 2 for that. If you are interested I may sell the other 2.They have only done 7 passes & are still newish. They cost me around $550 each. Maybe sell for $400 each? Can you fit a 255 on the front too? Let me know if you want to look at them. Munro.:burnout: -
Hey Guys, Use the rev limiter. Thats what it's there for! The best way to get consistent launching is to take off the same every time.Hold the revs up around 5-6000 then when the first amber comes on flatten it and watch for the green. The trick is not to sidestep the clutch(which will create problems-trust me) but to ease it off with a little bit of slip. You must hold the car on the line with the handbrake(or a line locker)to take up the slack in the driveline.I have smashed std driveshafts, diff output shafts,3 gearboxes, & recently an HKS driveshaft!!! It just takes practice. You shouldn't start breaking things until you pass 300rwkw, so if your GTR is stock or mild give it heaps.Biggest problem is tyres. Old, hard road tyres will not hook up.Borrow some sticky ones, do big burnouts, experiment with tyre pressures, etc. Drag racing GTRs is great fun. I took out my R34 which only has exhaust & apexi power FC and ran 12.1 @ 115mph! Don't over rev it. If your car is not making power over 7000rpm change gears earlier - it will run faster. Have fun. P.S. I have a mate over there with a GTR torana.Runs mid nines!!!

Jamboree over....Results R in :(
Munro replied to BOOSTMEISTER's topic in General Automotive Discussion
The whole point of Bracket Racing is that a guy running 13.7 can beat a guy running 10.7 if he is more consistent & has a better reaction time. The practice(or qualifying)session gives plenty of opportunity to run your best time & allow you to post the best dial in time for your combination/tuning on the day. When racing starts you know what your car runs flatout, & you stand on it & run that time again. You only back off if you are way ahead of the other guy so you dont break out.If you exceed your dial in time you are out - it's the only way it can work fairly. Sandbagging is when you dial in a very slow time that your car can easily beat, then back off enough to just stay ahead of the other car. Most guys dont do this & prefer to go hard - but it does happen. In competition Drag Racing there are classes which have Heads up/Pro start racing, where the amber lights all come on together & then both lanes get the green together.Whoever crosses the line first wins. This is great fun. But you can't pull up next to a 10 sec car & beat him if you are 2 seconds behind can you.So he with the most money wins - end of story. Same cars, but a dial in bracket race. The advantage of having a much faster car is gone - and the slower guy can beat the fast guy with good reaction times/skillful driving. Therefore; the little guy with a limited budget can race the big guys & have fun trying to kick their asses. Does bracket racing suck??? No way. It's great. You just have to understand it. :burnout: -

Hi, I think Japanese Motorsport may have one. Call Danny & check it out.

Meet Sat 14th 1.00pm @ Ingle Farm shopping centre near Kmart auto centre. Leave by 2.00pm up Montague rd, then North East rd through Chain of Ponds & stop after new bridge & B4 Kersbrook Turn off. After bunching up we will TL through Kersbrook & on to Williamstown. There is a bakery there with killer Ned Kelly pies so will have to stop for one.We will wait here for Jaffa unless he calls someone. We will try & leave Williamstown by 3.00pm & TR up Warren rd through Mt Crawford & on to Birdwood. Stop along Main rd near Birdwood High School to bunch up then continue up to Mannum turn off. TR then TR again B4 Tungkillo & head to Mt Torrens. TL at Mt Torrens then TL at Onkaparinga Valley Rd to Woodside. TL at Nairne Rd(then turns right fairly quickly) & stop near Cemetry on Nairne rd to bunch up. At Nairne TR on Princes Hwy to Littlehampton, then TR at Junction rd where pub is. Cruise to Balhanna(must TR over railway line just B4 Balhanna) then TL on to Onkaparinga Valley rd & head to Verdun. TL before Freeway overpass & onto Freeway towards Adelaide. Take Crafers exit, cross Freeway & go straight over roundabout up to Mt Lofty summit. We will stop here to get a coldie & check out the view. It will probably be busy here so will just have to park where we can. Afterwards we can cruise down into town & do whatever. :burnout: Looks like being a great day so anyone that wants to come is welcome. See you all there. For those that can't make it to this one - never mind - we've got all summer to cruise. :uh-huh:
-
Hi everyone, Confirm - meeting at 1.00pm Sat 14th at Ingle Farm Shopping center near Kmart Auto centre on Montague Rd. I don't know how many are coming yet but I can print directions if we need them. The LS1 guys were going to cruise on Sunday so why dont we invite them to this cruise. I will have to thoughly clean the R34 'cause it got filthy last Sunday going to Victor Harbour. Those boys know how to cruise!! :flower: PS. Can someone bring a digital camera?
-
I cant see why it has to be only Skylines. This is only a casual cruise for whoever wants to come. I agree that there will be more room at Kmart Ingle farm - good call Matt. Hope you can come out for the day. Congratulations on the pending new arrival!Hope all goes well. Regards, Munro. PS. Who's going on this Victor cruise tomorrow?
-
I have heard that there will be a street drags @ AIR on Sat night Oct 5th. There was a group of racers that were going to hire the track out on Oct 12th, but now it appears there will be monthly street meets again there isn't much point. Yay - Saturday night street meets usually start at 4pm & go till 10ish. Costs around $50 to race & they often prepare the track. Looks like being a good summer.Perhaps we could all go out to a street meet & then cruise together into town or something afterwards.:uh-huh:
-
Brad - DONT BE WEAK! Your car is sick and you know it. Besides, you can come with me anyway & keep your rocket for blasting round the 'burbs & scaring people. You know - it was YOU the cops heard going past the BP the other night. Your car is a weapon. I doubt anyone will be doing 200kph on the hills cruise. Hmmm. Okay- maybe a few will. But, we will have planned passing spots so everyone can lead for a while. GTRhead.
-
Yeah I know, It would be easier to do it earlier in the day. Sometimes there is a lot more traffic around before lunchtime though. After lunch it seems to clear up a bit. Suppose we could do shifts - a morning cruise for the early birds, then the same lap( for those that like to sleep in) in the afternoon. Joking - ha ha. Could ask the cops to close the whole area off for us for the day! Hmmm, one way to Birdwood - that would be fun.Wishful thinking!
-
Well it seems as if there is some interest, so here is my proposal. If the weather turns bad we will postpone till another day. Meet at Pelican Plaza(cnr Golden Grove Rd & North East Rd where Hungry Jacks is) at 1:00 to 1:30pm. Leave at 2:00pm approx. Cruise up North East Rd through Chain of Ponds then veer left to Kersbrook.Head to Williamstown(good bakery there) then right to Birdwood.Stop on the main rd at Birdwood to stretch legs & bunch up, then continue up to Tungkillo turnoff.Turn right & fang up through the Gum trees then turn right before Tungkillo & head up to Mt. Torrens,Woodside,Nairne, then on to the Freeway at Mt. Barker. Hoon back to town(all at legal speeds of course)& stop at the Mt. Lofty summit car park for coffees, photos etc. This is only a rough proposal, so please comment if it's too long or whatever. the biggest problem with group cruises is that the second half get left behind, so I would like to organise several pullover points where the tailenders pass the leaders and take the front. This way everyone can see everyone elses cars & we can stay together. But - if you like cruising at 60kays all day with your arm hanging out the window, this is not the cruise for you. If it looks like a goer, I will organise proper directions printed up. Suggestions? Of course any model car is welcome. :burnout:
-
I think you guys will get a shock when you find out how much quicker your cars are when you can actually get traction. It's great taking off sideways with smoke beltching from the tyres but you wait till you check out the push in the back you'll get from hooking up on a prepared track! Sure - you can hire the track out for $80 for the day(only one car on the track at a time) but no lights,no ambo, no insurance,no fire crew, dusty track(& I mean dusty!),no timing equipment = no value for me.I'd rather thrash in the hills where the road is not covered in gravel, dust,&crap. If you want to have fun doing burnouts, fanging round the bowl, & see what time your car can actually do down the Quarter Mile then a properly organised Track day will be very productive. Numbers will not be a problem 'cause if we are short I know lots of comp cars that will come out. The only hitch with this is once all the comp guys hear about it we will have too many cars and it wont be 'our' day.It costs $50 to race at a street drags(when there is one!) and you have to line up for ages. The whole point of this idea is that for a little more $ we can have a 'private' test & tune day where we set the agenda,do our own thing, & practice how to Drag Race without the pressure of thousands of people looking on.We can even have a burnout comp??? If it does'nt pan out it does'nt matter - but it would be fun would'nt it? In the meantime - what about an Arvo Cruise in the hills? GTRing, my favourite pastime. :burnout:
-
No problem - I will have a chat with Anna at AIR soon & get all the finer details. Then we will need exact car numbers & crew details. There are no spectators allowed due to insurance reasons so every one coming out will need to be nominated as crew by one of the drivers.I'm sure I'll need at least 10 crew- haha. Brute - love ya ute mate - looks tough. Dyno day sounds good. I'm interested in doing exhaust/computer like yours at some stage Hey, whats the address for the LS1 forum? Might check it out. Subject to weather & everyones schedule - how about an Arvo cruise in the Hills on Sat 14th Sept? We could meet around 1-2pm near Tea Tree Plaza somewhere & cruise up to Birdwood via Williamstown. From there we could head to Mt. Torrens - Lobethal - Woodside - Littlehampton - then down the freeway into town. I do this cruise regularly & it's great. This is just an idea, whats everyone think? If its bad weather we would just postpone it to another suitable time. I would like to get some good photos of my R34. Maybe we could get some cool group shots too - digital camera anyone? :uh-huh:
-
Hi Guys, Glad they didn't pull me over though!! Track day is an excellent idea - I will bring both GTRs. I think a dyno day is a separate event. It would be much easier to organise one at Tilbrooks like the SVD dyno day a while ago. It costs around $3500 all up to hire the track including track preparation, timing equipment, officials, fire/ambo etc. If we have 35 cars it will cost $100 each car.If each crew member puts in a little towards the car they come out with it would be quite viable.I'm sure Martin Donnon & Theo would be very interested in coming out and making a video of the day for us.They are the guys responsible for Hard Tuned Imports videos. It looks like I will be ordering a Holinger gearbox, but by the time it arrives & the R33 is ready to race it will be mid November! Still, that would give us plenty of time to organise a top track day. If the R33 runs well, & we can get it hooking up off the line, it might even be the day my R33 GTR breaks into the magical 9 second bracket! Hmmm - I can only hope??? Anyway - I'm sure there will be plenty of cruising action before then.I went for a cruise up the gorge today(after washing it of course). The R34 is just a superb car.Glad I bought it. When are we going to do an afternoon cruise in the hills? Speed - give me what I need.:burnout:
-
I have not had an accident in my Skyline(at this stage, hope never) Know of Silver GTR that did a while back(real mess, written off) Mark Tilbrook has built a number of Skylines up from almost shells, is currently building a R33 GTSt drift car from a shell, has lots of spare parts for them,& is very skilled in repairing/modifying skylines. The only thing he wont do in house is paint, but he has a really good guy to do that(Darren-Impressive Paint & Panel). Mark also has contacts with lots of std parts that have been pulled of cars when modified(like mine) I hope no-one ever has a prang. But if you do - Tilbrook Auto & Dyno is the place to go.It will be a lot faster when it leaves!!
-
Well this is interesting!I think both are great! Every car made is a compromise between power, handling, style,&cost to produce. To make one area better causes another to suffer.Anyone who says that one engine setup is better than another with out stating the intended main use for the car is being a little short sighted aren't they? rb26dett - mate, you are right. The Nissan RB26 is an awesome engine(I've got 2 of them) & even with very little modification is an excellent all round performer.Ever notice though, how 2 or 3 people in the car will affect it's performance?Or the fact that you must rev it up before dumping the clutch to avoid bogging down. How about towing or sitting on very high speeds for long periods of time?Skylines are race bred cars, designed for superior handling, top end power, and very sick speeds. They are wild sports cars without a doubt. But to say they kick V8s?? How many decent V8s have you driven? Remember you are comparing Japan's best engine with a basic domestic engine available in a taxi or wagon.Even the Gen III V8 is detuned & stiffled with a pee shooter exhaust system.V8s are about torque.Seat of the pants - push you in the back - torque. From just off idle most V8s will power away without any fuss & the bottom end torque feels great.I had an 8.2L (502ci) chev V8 in a holden ute (5 speed/tall diff etc) and the way it felt in any gear was just wicked. Most V8 cars have wide, comfortable seats, plenty of space, and you can just hop in and cruise anywhere in Australia in comfort. They are tourers, tow cars, and generally very nice to drive.I have been in a 98 F1 spider. The sound of that 3.5L V8 at 8000rpm is like nothing else on earth. The 350 chev I had in another ute sounded sweet at 9000rpm (650hp). We have had all different types of V8s over the years in our family & even as a total skyline nut I still love V8s, & will always have one in some form of another.Variety is the spice of life. You don't have a V8 commodore instead of a skyline. They are for different purposes. If you can, you have both - if you can't you compromise & pick one. I have spent most of the evening thrashing around Adelaide with a group of about 25-30 cars.About half of the group were turbo Skylines & the other half V8 Holdens(early & late model). I chose to take my R34 GTR. We all had a great time. But if I had to drive to Melbourne tomorrow, I know what I would be taking. Holden VU SS ute - 5.7L Gen III V8, 6 speed, tiger. Opinionated Revhead.
