you dont have to get the data logging if you dont want to and will save dollars... i agree that motec and autronic are for the more serious applications, however they are a lot more refined units with many adjustment points, allowing for a much more polished end result, from idle characteristics to the power and torque curves....even will increase reliability.

ok genuine nissan.....hopefully they will have them in stock... i am in southeast, i was told that blackburn nissan do a lot of work on skylines...anyone had any experience with them?? I know and dealt with AVO for many years....but do not know the others mentioned. I guess i will have to go out to each to meet and make up my mind.

although pricey, motec and the autronic are the way to go....personally i would stay away from the rest. and choosing between the two mentioned i would go the latter, the autronic is the better unit, however harder to tune and only one guy(mech engineer with lots of race exp.) in melbourne if not australia i would trust to tune it....pm me if anyone needs to contact him.

Hello all; As i am nearing 100k on the clock i am researching timing belt and components replacement. My questions are as follows: 1) As well as the belt and the tensioners i will also replace the water pump, however should i replace any other component(s)? 2) Would you recommend making any modifications or fitment of any aftermarket parts such as cam gears while this work is carried out? 3) Who in melb (near south east if possible) can i trust to have these done without getting ripped off? 4) Approx. what are the costs involved? I should add that the car is a sII R33 GTS-T, stock apart from cat back exhaust and air pod, but soon to have custom 3inch dump/front pipe and high flow cat. Any information will be valuable. Thanks!

anyone know where you can get the redline g/box oil in melbourne? i am dying to try it.... -
If you use good synthetic oils such as Mobil1, there is no need for additives. Personally i would stay away from any such product including those oil flush products which you are supposed to add to engine before an oil change. Years ago i had an engine on its last legs, and was recommended to use the stop smoke additive(very thick honey like substance) in order to get a few more months out of the engine, but the engine became very very ill and died within days. Another experience i had was when we pulled a mate's engine apart to see why it had no oil pressure and suddenly died after he put in an additive similar to stop smoke, the engine internals were covered with thick sticky carbon/oil/grease like substance which blocked all the oil galleries and consequently cooked the engine. It took us forever to clean the engine parts that this additive coated. So yeah i say just use good oil and dont worry about additives. Cheers

"yeah i always get bad fumes in the cabin if sitting in traffic for a while. gives me a saw throat after extended preiods, im assuming its not real good for you." N/A_R33, mate you have an exhaust leak, go to an exhaust specialist and have it checked out...they will find where it is... i had the same problem with a previous car, after changing the exhaust manifold gasket many times and not fixing the problem, i discovered that the manifold face was warped and not sealing properly... had the manifold machined and problem fixed! Cheers

Well i have a cat back HKS system, it has a nice but a softish note, not too loud... i am currently thinking about getting custom dump, 3 inch pipe to cat and a 3 inch high flow cat... is anyone able to tell me if this will make it too loud? As the car is everyday driver i do not want it over the limit.

I do remember the Victor Bray vs Jeff Watson race a few years ago..... Jeff eventually bent the chassis of that Austin Healy and was looking for a new car to put the FJ20, the last time i have heard of him...
-
yeah i think it was a rb30 powered 300zx... around the same time Jeff Watson had a FJ20 powered Austin Healey which was also an asss kicker...
-
yeah the dandenongs are a great cruise, i go up there a bit at night when there are not many cars around....the cars sounds awesome as the sound echoes off the side as you are climbing up....

I have driven dozens of r33's with various km's on the clock while i was searching for my r33 over an eight month period. I noticed that all had similar shift problems, although some were more obvious than others. I came to accept that either the japs really hammered their gearboxes in japan and therefore the gearboxes deteriated prematurely or the skyline boxes are one of their weakness'. After puchasing my r33 i immediately changed the oil to the forum recomended VMX80. I am very glad i did as the oil that came out of the box looked very gluggy and to my suprise was under 3 litres. 4 litres of VMX80 went in, and sure enough did help a lot, but learning to drive the skyline, that is changing gears at the right revs, having the seat at the right distance to the pedals and getting the feel to where each gear was the key to smoother changes. I must say i am not a beginner manual driver, nor am i a newcomer to turbo and modified cars, but it took a while getting used to the skyline engine/gearbox combination. My next step is to use the redline stuff as most of you have mentioned, and perhaps bleeding the clutch to make sure no air or water is present in the system. What i still cannot comprehend is though, regardless of the ambient and engine temperatures the gear changes can be very inconsistent; i.e sometimes very smooth other times a bit rough. I just wanted to share my experiences in the hope that it may help regarding this issue. Thanks.

Red17...My foam is (or was) red however now it is covered with so much dust, dirt and other nasties that it is very hard to see the colour....it is as black as the ace of spades.... Definately works on my engine. Perhaps yours wasnt oiled?? and by the way Datsun 1600's rock!!!!!!!!

I am not sure but around 50 to 70 dollars. I cant justify paying more than 80 dollars when i can re-use the old one. I am only thinking of buying a new one for the convenience of not having to wait until the old one dries after washing.
-
I have a HKS pod that needs cleaning as i havent done it since i bought the car about 2 years ago. As far i know these foam type filters can be washed, either in soapy water or kerosene, but to be able to filter effectively they need to be oiled. And this is when the afm problems may occur as over-oiling will have oil dripping inside the afm under vacuum. Once the oil is inside the afm you will experience various problems. However i would not recommend not oiling the foam as the filtering will dramatically decrease without sufficient amount of oil. I am planning on getting a new foam already oiled and installing it, and washing the old one, oiling it and storing it for next time. I hope this has answered your questions.
