  1. Oh and at any decent power levels they chew up and spit out CV joints like a fat man with a box of chicken pieces at KFC.
  2. GAH YOUR CAPSLOCK IS HURTING MY BRANS1!!!1!!TY!!! Seriously though man there is tutorials galore on nissansilvia.com. Its a piss easy swap by all accounts - easiest being an RB20 or RB25 swap. Honestly though unless you have a N/A S15 (and why, why, why would you?) or the engine thats in it sufferred from the traditional SR20 sudden exploding head syndrome keep the SR20DET - that late model engine is beautiful and so easily modified. EDIT - Just realised he said GTR swap but meh I stand by what I said.
  3. Hmm I have heard the legnum boxes do tend to break and I wasn't aware that they were the same 'box... But my point remains the same. All of the people I know who have wanted to get serious modifying a WRX has resulted in gearbox problems. Sure the Mitsubishi crowd have the same problems but comparatively they are better than the Subaru equivilent. Honestly I would just stay in a R33/34 but if I had to change it would be an Evo over a WRX - plus they are a rarer sight on the roads than the WRX fraternity.
  4. Seriously though WRX's have several mechanical problems. - An engine that is low on torque and power. - Is expensive to modify. - Gearboxes made of play-doh. - Honestly the AWD system is poor in comparison to an equivilent EVO. - Actually has very limited wheel selection. Look at an Evo VII GT-A with the sequential box. Can pick them up fairly cheaply now. Plus their not as obnoxious as the Evo GSR. Gearboxes are quite strong. Parts are cheap. You can squeeze 20" mags under the guards with little/no modification. Better engine. The ones I have driven tend not to understeer and instead seem to be quite neutral. There is also massive aftermarket support.
  5. You shouldn't because all WRX drivers just look like yet another d*ckhead. /endthread
  6. I hated the way my R33 got me pulled over just about every other day - which resulted in me losing my licence on a technicality. I also hated most of the culture associated with owning an import (the fanboyism, the young idiots, the hoons stepping into soarers and skylines, the forum heroes etc). That said, once I have twelve points left to "spend" I will buy another one and go crazy with the modification stick probably a four door R33 S1 GTST with a built RB30/25DET or I may even turn to the dark side with an Evo GT-A (I confess I am inspired by the C-RED "EFO" damn that thing is yummy) or possibly an Aristo.
  7. Well I am just putting the feelers out for anything up to/around the $6000 mark. Currently I am located in Hobart but I travel to and from Burnie/Launceston as work and uni demands. Will consider just about anything in pretty good condition, particularly interested in finding a 626/TX5 Turbo or any 4AGE powered corolla in good nick but I need a new daily driver pretty fast (i.e. the next two/three weeks). I am getting to the stage where I will be forced to buy a Commonhore - not good. Basically I am after something thats a bit fun but not powerful enough to get me in trouble again... Contact me via PM or call on 0400 796 308.
  8. I must firstly confess I have little knowlege of the V series of skylines - so I come in search of advice. A friend of mine has just picked up his 2004 V35 350GT coupe with the six speed manual and is looking at the twin turbo and supercharger kits that are available. One of the big questions though is how strong the stock gearbox is, I have searched for information and found vague torque limits. Does anyone know exactly how strong the gearboxes are - reports tend to vary wildly. Any info or links would be appreciated.
  9. I may sound like yet another broken record being played in a room filled with broken record players - I essentially lost my licence about six months back for driving a skyline, if I had been in any other vehicle I am sure I would have received a warning instead of demerit loss. The reason is that we have been tarred with the hoon brush for a reason. The guys doing one-legged burnouts in mcdonalds car parks are slowly migrating from their commodores to skylines due to simple economics - skylines are newer, cheaper, faster and are starting to get into full stride with depreciation. We should realise, pretty soon we will be driving the new VL Turbos. Sure its sad, but its born of market forces and lets face it the majority of skylines out there - *cough* R33's *cough* - are over fifteen years old, which is prime hoon ownership territory. The minority have - as with most things nowadays - ruined it for the majority doing the right thing. Is it possible to change this image? Well, yes. When was the last time you saw a 1930's all steel ford hotrod pulled over getting inspected (not that the officer would have to look hard for defects - the blower is hanging out of the bonnet)? Pretty much never and when you do they probably had it coming for doing something stupid. Forty years ago those cars were the hoons of the day, now they are works of automotive art and are appreciated as such. In the local newspaper after the last Targa Tasmania there was a big piece on how the Targa encourages hooning. Right next to it was a piece on the amazing cars at a local hot rod show. It is possible to change our public image, its just not easy. Today Tonight (and similar) are just symptoms of a problem in the automotive community that results in a public hatred of imports and modified cars. The other day I was talking with some friends about racing - at the drag strip (I was lucky enough to have a go in a 10 second SR20DET powered escort owned by oone of my uncles) - and an old lady turned around and started berating us for being no better than those young hoons doing burnouts in her street on a friday night. Idiots are the problem with the automotive community and you can't arrest them all - you couldn't build the cells fast enough. In terms of "When are you going to grow up?": my father is a fifty five year old mechanical engineer. He builds cars essentially from scratch, travelling around to find all steel parts to build that next early hot rod. He builds the engines himself, does the suspension, chassis work and tuning himself. They have all been capable of mid 11's on the quarter mile and are driveable every day without a worry. His cars have been bought by television personalities from across the country. Is he still a child? We can do a few things to help - ignore the criticism (its our hobby they can f*ck off) and respond when journalism over steps the line, represent ourselves well and fairly in the community, disassociate ourselves from the hoon population and where possible fight inappropriate charges in court (even though its futile a lot of the time, the few wins set precedents).
  10. That sucks man. Hope they catch the prick.
  11. Mmm yes a celsior. Take one Celsior with leather interior, plus full luxo kit including height adjustable air suspension, add one M90 supercharger kit at 7 psi plus an MV autos shift kit (gearboxes can be fragile sometimes). Extractors, custom exhaust with mufflers to keep a nice V8 note yet keep it unobtrusive. Shave off the rear antenna and reinstall it underneath the car just to smooth out the lines. Dark coloured mags, chrome lip.
  12. If your a mechanically minded person who can spray paint fairly well and can get contacts for parts then this sounds like a nice project car. That said I am with QWK32, if the exterior is bad, the interior is bad, chances are it will have received very little care and attention. Buy it knowing that your going to have to fix something and keep a slush fund just in case. Alternatively spend the slush fund on a better car - your call.
  13. Its amazing that most of the support is for the aristo/chaser and not a nissan - on a skyline forum! A stagea would be okay I guess, but I'm not attracted to very many wagons. I am sorry there Andrew but that crown (in my opinion) is making me taste bile...
  14. Maybe I should just follow a dream here, build the XB GT properly, sell it and do this with money to spare. The trick is building it so that its always classy and you don't want to sell it. The way I see it financially for this kind of car: Initial purchase price: low. Modification cost: moderate. Sex appeal: immeasurable. Downside though Depreciation: high as
  15. Sounds like your doing exactly what I would love to. Post up pics when its done ya hear?
  16. Your right yes they are heavy, but I have seen lightly modified examples pull consistent 13's on a quarter mile. I don't think they are ugly but then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The whole auto/manual thing is irrelevant. It doesn't need to function as a sports car, merely a cruiser with sporting pretensions. The auto if anything is better for this role, quarter mile being more important than a circuit but ultimately really being irrelevant in the end. Fair enough on the chaser thing then if your after a sporty sedan. EDIT: plus Epsy, I'm not actually looking to buy/build one just saying that by all rights there should be more of them floating about.
  17. Okay wtf is going on here? i don't even go on that site normally! Any answers?
  18. ^^ Not really correct - I doubt a hyundai accent appeals to the same market as an import or LS1 powered commodore. I would have a Commodore with an LS1 and fork out for a twin turbo kit in a second - if I had the money to do so and keep up with what I would imagine would be its tremendous thirst. Thats not my point though. Anyone can build a comfortable cruiser out of a commodore - and everyone does. Yet theres not too many cruiser imports. Why not? They appeal to a similar market, are produced, can be built easily and on a budget. Plus an aristo (in my opinion) is a chaser with bigger balls. Why is everyone hooked up on chasers?
  19. I don't fully understand why people are attracted to the chaser. It has a worse engine than an Aristo and the same chassis minus some interior luxuries sure they look nice modified but they are still more expensive than an Aristo. *confused face*
  20. NZM.031: My fathers 1938 coupe has a supercharged 350 chev stroker and ran 9.8 seconds at *edit* baskerville *edit I could find the time slips somewhere I'm sure if i visited my parents. Plus, reaction time was terrible - he's edging on fifty years old - so it could probably be faster still. There are plenty of ridiculously fast street muscle cars, and your just being a bit closed minded if you believe japanese cars are the only method to gaining a performance car. I love all cars, from mustangs to the japanese kei class turbos. Scathing: I did consider a V35 but the price for what they are is still prohibitive. They are an amazing looking car once cleaned up though. Perfect for that comfy cruiser with a spark of personality.
  21. Fun cars i have owned for under $3000 off the top of my head: 1987 Prelude 2.0i 1988 Accord 2.0i 1991 Integra LS (I think it was, hell fun car, insurance was pricey) 1985 Civic hatch (I actually want another one for an engine conversion) 198* Lancer hatch (basically an early mirage) Can't-remember-the-year Alfa 33 A Alfasud (electrics caught fire during the night - however I did buy it for $300 while building another car) 1991 Laser (that thing was a FWD rally car made out of granite, mithril and hardened weetbix by the dwarves of middle earth loved it, crashed it, pop the bumpers back out with a heat gun and a gentel persuader, repeat) N13 Pulsar Vector with LSD option - hilarious car what else? Well of the R31's, Falcons and Commies I have driven in this price bracket they were mostly nowhere near as fun as the front wheel drive 4 bangers. Mostly in way worse condition for the money too.
  22. There is one for sale in tasmania, I can find out about it for you if your desperate
  23. Thats nommy. Not the rims I would choose and the intercooler actually spoils the front lines in silver but still nice.
  24. I must admit at the outset this stems from my latest run-ins with the police, leaving me with a single point. I have been considering building just a nice comfortable car, perfect for highway and street cruising. It must be comfortable, be capable of actually fitting your mates, look good with some decent rims, yet still hold the classic import appeal of ease of modification. Another big one for me is not looking vulgar, which is difficult because most people wanting an import cruiser go for the 20" rim, lowered, ugly bodykit look. The street machine and hot rod scenes have been doing it for years without looking like twats, why not us? I have several ideas, in fact it appears I have one for each of the main import marques: A twin turbo Aristo, with leather interior, with a nice set of alloy finish mags if its any colour, or body coloured center mags if its black with a chrome lip. Minor performance modifications would include changing to a front mount and a custom exhaust - but kept quiet so it doesn't interfere with the comfort levels - plus a slight boost increase and tune. Keep the comfy suspension stock. Install a nice sound system. It only has one of the best engines ever made with one of the most comfy interiors I've ever been in. A R34 GT-T 4 door. Possibly in auto (gasp!). Again change the mags to something tasteful with nice tyres. Same performance mods as above. Remove that rear spoiler - they don't suit the sedan shape in my opinion. This has the added advantage of Skyline credibility and parts support. A Galant VR4 in black or red. 2.5 V6 twin turbo and evo drivetrain along with a comfy interior. Nice start in my opinion. Front mount intercooler (sprayed black), revised exhaust and tune. Mags. Done. Perhaps ditch the evo rear spoiler, it spoils the sleeper sedan look, also I'm not too fond of the stock front bumper. I found Mazda to be a bit difficult as they don't really have the comfy four door thing going on, but nevertheless, by sacrificing fuel economy, space for mates and reliability a Cosmo 20B fits the bill. The tricky part would be not looking like another d!ck. Careful selection of rims would be in order to not join the ugly import car club. I figure its all just making informed, reliable modifications and clearing up the body lines. How would you do it? What would you do it with?
  25. Sweet god evocoop! thats the most twisted conrod I have ever seen! Damn! ... ... ... Damn!
