Following on from the massive success of the world reknowned Rapfix II, the brand new Rapfix QRS was announced today by Works Bell in Tokyo. Like all Works Bell's other world class high quality quick releases, the Rapfix QRS is manufactured in Japan with true Japanese machining precision. The Rapfix QRS consists of two parts as shown above: - the steering plate which you attach to your steering wheel - the Rapfix QRS body which is attached to your steering boss kit. Incredibly compact - Just 25 mm thick For some other companies, it is near impossible to achieve the goal of designing a quick release that features easy operation with no shakiness or play. However, the Works Bell Rapfix QRS achieves these goals by utilizing the lever, cover and ball lock system. In addition, it allows the driver to maintain a comfortable seating position due to it’s very compact low profile design with a thickness of just approx 25mm (1 inch) ! Two foldable levers are designed to make the turning of the cover simple. It is also a safety device because the cover cannot be turned without moving the lever. Steering Wheel & Hub / Boss Kit Compatibility There is no welding required to fit a Works Bell Rapfix QRS Quick Release to your car - it is strictly a bolt on product with no welding required. At the steering wheel end, the Rapfix QRS ships pre-machined with bolt holes in both standard 6 bolt Momo bolt pattern steering (PCD 70mm), and 6 bolt Nardi bolt pattern (PCD 74mm), so it is compatible with a very wide range of steering wheels from a number of manufacturers including Works Bell, Momo, Nardi, Personal, OMP etc. The part of the Rapfix QRS that attaches to the steering boss / hub has a 6 bolt (PCD 70mm) bolt pattern, the same bolt pattern as used on Momo steering bosses / hubs. That is a VERY important point beer baron. The thinking behind that may be so that if a driver is trapped in a car on fire, he can at least have a chance of reaching the fire extinguisher to stop himself from getting burnt. - Adam

What some people do is mount a second larger extinguisher in the car so that if one extinguisher is not enough, then you have a second one on hand - especially in case of a fuel fire. You can find a video here of when the supercharged 911 caught fire at Wakefield ... The supercharged 911 fire was a fuel fire at the track. As you can hear in the video, the small extinguisher was not enough to put it out. Though it doesn't look like a huge fire, the damage was very expensive to fix, and even things like the headliner in the interior needed to be replaced after the fire. My car caught fire (an oil fire) on the road a few years ago, where oil leaked onto exhaust headers and caught fire, and the small extinguisher was barely enough to get it out. After that I ALWAYS carried two fire extinguishers in the car - one up front, and a second larger one behind the passenger seat. At the end of the day, if your car catches fire you want as much chance as you can get to get the fire out quickly, and of course you have to engineer the mounting carefully so that the fire extinguishers are safely mounted. - Adam

The price in Japanese Yen of JPY 3,500,000 is still the same, but due to recent changes in the Japanese Yen exchange rate, the price of the car in Australian Dollars and a number of other currencies is now much lower ... When the car was put on the market, the price of JPY 3,500,000 was equivalent to Australian $59,500. On today's exchange rate, the price of JPY 3,500,000 for the car and extensive spares package is now equivalent to Australian $45,477. In terms of some examples of pricing on other Porsche calipers, we got a quote earlier this week from an official Porsche dealer for a 996 GT3 caliper with a retail price of AU$2,277. As another example, I just spoke to an official Porsche dealer who advised that the Australian RRP on the 997 Cup Car caliper (part number 997 351 431 90) is AU$3,486. There was a Porsche caliper that retailed for around $1,100 a while ago, but we were told by an official Porsche dealer that Porsche's retail prices rose on that caliper recently. So if someone has quoted you $1,100 for a Carrera Cup Car caliper, that's a bargain ! With the greatest respect, you asked about comparisons to "over-the-counter monoblock 6-piston calipers you can get for $700". If you'd like to post some weight, materials and stiffness specs for a particular over-the-counter monoblock 6-piston caliper, I'd be more than happy to compare specs on them for you. With the greatest respect, are you seriously suggesting that the official Motorsport division of Porsche would use any material in brake calipers that is "not very strong" ? The ceramic inserts in the Porsche Motorsport Department calipers are made from a special material called Zirkonoxide. Zirkonoxide is a special ceramic oxide of Zirconium. According to http://www.accuratus.com/zirc.html , Zirconium Oxide (Y2O3 stabilized TZP) has a flexural strength of 120,400 lb (54,612 kg) per square inch ! You can find an explanation of what flexural strength is here ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flexural_strength See the post two posts below this one for an update on the BMW 135i situation. I have never heard of any issue whatsoever with the ceramic inserts in Porsche Motorsport calipers.
