I would make sure you can get the import approval paperwork to show that it was imported legally, and also ask for anything he might have from when it was purchased in Japan - paperwork from the exporter, auction report, shipping paperwork, etc. Stolen cars are not able to get through Customs in Japan normally so I would not worry about that if the car is already here in Australia. Don't put too much faith in RACV inspections as they have proven to be quite useless in the past - it's not a bad way to get a general idea but I would stronlg suggest that you look over the car properly yourself also.

Private Import
kakimoto33 replied to m3gtr's topic in Importing, Compliance, Modification Laws & Regulations
You can import pretty much anything you like as a 'personal import' as long as you have awned and used it yourself while living overseas for at least the past 12 months and are returning to live in Australia again afterwards. Once you have the car in Australia then you have to meet the normal registration requirements in your state - usually this means minor compliance type work to make sure the car meets ADR's and unfortunately this includes it being right hand drive unless it's over 30 years old (15 years old in WA) -
Transport to SA from VIC could cost anything from around $350 to $600 depending on how much space transport companies have available and how friendly they are to you. Compliance will depend on how the car was imported - I would hope that it came into Australia under the '15 year old' laws before they ended in Dec 2005 because if so then you should be able to comply the car for around $1,000 or less. if it was imported under the SEVS compliance scheme then it must be complied by the workshop who issued the import approval. In any case make sure you get the import approval and check the history of the car before buying.

The EVO wagon (CT9W) was only built in tiptronic automatic so and manual models around would have been manual conversions. Most compliance workshops are saying that they will not comply cars with transmission conversions although there are a few around that have no problem with it, so it depends on which workshop gets plates for this model first.

There are all sorts of models being considered by workshops at the moment and there will be even more over the coming years as new models are released in Japan too. here are a few that are in the pipeline at the moment: Mitsubishi Galant VR-4 (EC5A) http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1544927 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1485628 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1449068 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1449067 Mitsubishi Legnum VR-4 (EC5W) http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1524738 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1534970 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1510869 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1543165 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1513482 Mitsubishi Lancer GT-A EVO wagon (CT9W) http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1531249 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1417416 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1404968 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1431882 Nissan Cima - possibly President also (F50) http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1534632 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1519180 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1544867 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1497381 Nissan Gloria and/or Nissan Cedric (Y33) http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1545735 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1541242 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1547116 Nissan Gloria and/or Nissan Cedric (Y34) http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1549757 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1549755 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1545733 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1547112 Nissan Fuga (Y50) http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1546959 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1534775 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1513294 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1524426 Toyota Altezza AS300 wagon (Lexus IS300) http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1414451 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1461384 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1432564 http://www.j-specimports.com/dealernet/det....php?id=1450099 There are plenty of others that 'could' be imported also if there was enough demand and someone was willing to put up the money for a test car, but hopefully these examples above will give you an idea of some of the newer models coming up and a little eye candy to keep you busy for a few minutes too.

Most cars are listed as FOB price because that's the more accepted industry standard however we will look after shipping and other parts of the process for you also - you can pay a CIF price if you want the car put on a ship and nothing else, but usually our clients pay FOB price up front and other costs as they are due throughout the process. If you wanted a rough quote for delivery to your door once the car lands in Australia then we can do that also. Basically just let us know how much or how little of the process you want us to do for you and what you prefer to arrange yourself, we are very flexible. Prices can vary a lot based on the car condition, obviously something that has been fully restored will cost a lot more than an average car that is showing it's age - you could spend anything from maybe $15,000 landed for a rough example through to $50,000 or more for something really quite stunning.

Nah, that is a total load of rubbish - rest easy knowing that you will be able to import even more makes and models next year as the list of SEVS approved cars grows. If they were concerned about there being too many of one model around then they can start by cutting back on Commodore and Falcon production
-
The simple answer is NO because it's not totally standard - the current laws are that all cars must be completely stock for SEVS compliance, however in reality you should be able to import anything as long as it can be returned to standard without any signs that it was ever modified (eg. no holes cut for intercooler piping, etc.) If you do import a modified car then you would either have to swap it back to standard yourself or make some arrangements with the compliance workshop for them to do it for you, most workshops will charge extra for the work involved unless it's only very simple and common mods like exhaust and allow wheels. Obviously some care would be needed when buying cars with this level of modifications to make sure it's only mods that can be removed without leaving any damage on the car, so just make sure the car is checked very well and also make sure you get approval from the compliance workshop before buying, this will reduce the chances that it could be rejected once it arrives.

I offered to do the test including dyno runs before and after without any other mods, and have been waiting for someone to contact me about it - my car is just sitting around waiting at the moment so please let me know if you want me to be the test animal. Bass Junky: please call me on 0414 502 250 anytime if you want to arrange it. -
Be careful when getting a compliance workshop to do your car based on price alone - there are a number of workshops out there who will do inferior work or maybe not do all the work required, we have seen this sort of thing before. It's quite possible for them to skip a few steps that will end up causing you trouble when you try to register the car. Make sure you choose a workshop that has a good reputation and also double check all work yourself afterwards - it shouldn't be necessary with the tight RAWS workshop requirements, but there is a big different between good and bad workshops still. If price is the biggest issue then make sure of exactly what they will be charging you for - some workshops might quote you $2,500 plus tyres and that is exactly what you will pay - others will offer $2,200 plus tyres but you could end up paying more in the long run for things that might not be included, for example: DOTARS application fee - $165 GST - it's basic but many do not include it in quotes brake pads - some will replace regardless and charge ~$400, others will replace only if actually needed suspension bushes - some workshops will replace things that are not really needed in order to get more $$$ swapping non-standard parts - could be done free from some workshops, others will charge $80/hour These are all fairly easy things for 'cheap' workshops to add to the price afterwards - just make sure you ask all the right questions and get it in writing if you are not 100% confident.

My car needs to be tuned anyway so I could be tempted to test a sample unit at the right price - I am also going to be fitting the T04E soon so I could do a 3 way test before, after and with a bigger turbo ... anyway give me a call on 0414 502 250 if you want to see what we can work out. Thanks, Craig. -
You should be alright as long as you can provide reciepts for the new engine, they will note the new engine number and may quickly check over the car for major defects. If the new engine is a different sort (RB26 instead of RB25) then there may be some attention paid but I can't see if being too hard.

I just got this car registered about 2 weeks ago but unfortunately I have to sell it as I have purchased a house - I was expecting to keep this Aristo for quite a while but the house costs are climbing higher than expected, so unfortunately I have to let it go now. This car is my favorite of all the cars I have owned, it's so nice to drive and very quick as well - you can't appreciate these unless you experience them yourself. 1993 Toyota Aristo 3.0V Opal white pearl 3000cc twin turbo 118,000 kms (genuine) 2 way automatic transmission 18" ZEIT alloy wheels Power adjustable front seats Power adjustable steering column Climate control air conditioning Central door locking Power steering Power windows Traction control ABS brakes 7 speaker stereo with subwoofer Please click here check out the photos and other details on ebay - call and ask for Craig on 0400 502 250 if you have any questions or want to arrange a time to view the car. This car been fitted with new genuine Lexus badges front and rear since the photos were taken, it also has an Sanyo 10 disk CD stacker, remote engine starter and turbo timer. The car is in very clean condition all round and drives very well, in any case I am happy to show it to anyone in Melbourne who is interested and I can send photos, etc. to buyers in other states if required. This car has been listed on ebay and the listing ends soon so please be quick if you are interested. Although the Aristo seems to be worth more I am only looking for $15,750 or near offers for this car with almost a full 12 months registratrion, however it's listed at ebay from $13,000 with no reserve because that about what it owes me, so there is a chance to get it cheaper too. I just want to stress the point that this car is ALREADY LANDED in Australia, it has been COMPLIED and it fully REGISTERED already - also please note that this is my own personal vehicle and I am selling it privately.

Importing From Nz
kakimoto33 replied to typ21r's topic in Importing, Compliance, Modification Laws & Regulations
You can import any make or model as a personal import as long as you are moving back to Australia to live here again, you also must have owned and used the car yourself for the full 12 months - evidence would be required that you are not just coming back for a holiday and that you have had the car long enough. -
Purchasing from J-spec
kakimoto33 replied to thrtytwo's topic in Importing, Compliance, Modification Laws & Regulations
Delivery will usually take around 8-12 weeks from the time of purchase until the car is landed and complied ready for rego, although it can be a little more or less depending on shipping schedules, compliance turn around, etc. At the moment there is a ship leaving Japan around Nov 18th so we can probably get most cars purchased in the next 2 weeks onboard that one, it should land in Australia around the start of December, and you should be able to get your car registered in time for Christmas if all goes well. In most cases I would strongly suggest this sort of inspection for cars purchased from normal used car dealers, private sellers or through Yahoo Auctions in Japan - there is just too much risk that the seller can leave out important information about the cars condition which would otherwise affect your decision to purchase. When we have cars inspected we will always try to get as much information from the seller as possible first, so there is the best chance that the car will be as expected and the purchase can proceed, however there are always cases where bad things are found in which case you would be very happy that you had the inspection. If the car is good and you choose to proceed with the purchase then at least you will have heaps of extra photos (usually around 150-200 of them) to see you through until the car gets here too. Please note that we do not make any profit from the inspections at all, the only reason that we suggest them for our clients is so we have happier clients with better cars, it works out better for everyone involved that way. -
Unfortunately neither VicRoads or the Police can get their thoughts right on this issue. It's not legal to bend or cut the plate to make it fit, apparently you are supposed to modify the bumper on your car instead, however this is not an issue for compliance so there really is no way for anyone to know what is the correct action to take. In practical terms I think bending the plate slightly on each side or shaving a few mm's off the edge is perfectly acceptable and I have done this many times without being hassled by the Police at all - the trick is to make sure you do it nicely so it doesn't appear that you have tried to alter the plate to avoid speed camera's, etc. Generally speaking most Police officers are quite level headed and they will understand that you have to make the plate fit on the car somehow, so be sensible and you should be fine.

Can you also confirm if these ones from the guy on Ebay will use the original throttle body and injectors - in other words can it be fitted to a standard RB25 without needing anything else apart from new intercooler piping? -
Too Cheap? Any Suggestions Why?
kakimoto33 replied to smileymertz's topic in Four Door Family & Wagoneers
Not repainted - this car is original black pearl and from what we can tell it has original paint too. Being cautious is not a bad idea but that should include contacting us to find out more about the car rather than making a snap judgement that it must be a bad car ... please keep in mind that we always look at cars as carefully as possible and never ask anyone to buy without being comfortable with the condition first - also there are times where we will advise people against buying certain cars becuase we believe there is something better around or just because that car may not be as good as we would like. I guess what I am trying to say is that there are amazing bargains around, so please do contact us to find out more about cars that you like - there is no obligation so you don't have to buy, but it's certainly worth looking further if you want to get a bargain.
