If you really want the car repaired and you're insured with someone who calls themselves an "enthusiast" insurer (particularly if you have a highish agreed value) then you could try arguing that you want it repaired because you can't replace the time you've spent and the sentimental value that comes with it. Explain that it was your first decent car or whatever the case may be and if they truly are enthusiasts they'll understand, and if it's an otherwise marginal call it might just convince them to lean your way and repair it rather than call it an economic write-off. Worth a go?
