Yeah looks like a water-air intercooler. It works pretty much the same as a "normal" intercooler, except that the core is immersed in water. You need some way to cool the water (usually another radiator somewhere) and another pump to move the water around but they are a very efficient setup according to nearly every reliable source I've spoken to.

If a shop does some work and, because of their work or choice of parts, it fails, it should be up to them to sort it out. In your case, they chose the hose and didn't make any effort to shield it from the heat that would quite obviously come from the exhaust/turbo side of an engine... they should at the very least replace it with something more suitable, and preferably repair any damage caused by the hose melting.

ANSWER: Depends on whether they're telling you to put them near a source of heat... But yeah most shops should have a basic understanding of what will and won't tolerate heat Heh it can be frustrating though, when I listen to any of the Jap drift videos or those dodgy game shows (they rock!! lol) or whatever, I keep thinking "oooh I know I should understand that... argh!" and it's really frustrating But yeah I have been thinking for a while I should get back into it. oh and... w00t @ post #5555
