As I said above, if you use Firefox just grab the translate extension: its uses google Here's one I haven't figured out: is there a way to string together searches with the "and" / "or" operators: e.g. I want to search for "gtr OR gt-r"? LW.

Who makes the cooling channel pistons for Tomei, because I haven't found anyone else selling them (although I haven't exactly looked hard)? LW.

Quick R32 GT-R Turbo Removal Question
lwells replied to lwells's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
There is no way to get to the manfold nuts from underneath (at least that I can see). The turbo is in the way. If I could seperate the turbo from the manifold, it would be far easier to get at the bottom row of manifold nuts, but its seems I am not the only person who hasn't been able to seperate the two despite what it says in the manual. Lucien. -
Just so people know, I haven't forgotten about this: I have just been so busy of late I haven't had time to even look at it, so I am still only half way through. In about a months time I hope to have a little more time to devote to it. Have faith, I will get it done eventually Lucien.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance: just needed to know that I wasn't missing something. Hopefully have them out be the week's end LW. -
Quick R32 GT-R Turbo Removal Question
lwells replied to lwells's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Are you talking about this hose?: I have disconnected the oil hose (indicated) from the block (its still connected to the turbo but I am pretty sure its not fouling on anything). LW. -

Quick R32 GT-R Turbo Removal Question
lwells replied to lwells's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Pete, Yeah, that's what I was thinking. The only problem is getting something on the bottom three nuts for the manifold: with the turbo in the way there is no way to get a socket in there, so I think it will have to be a ring spanner between the inidividal manifold pipes. Lucien. -
I am just in the process of removing the stock turbos from my R32 GT-R to replace all the gaskets and studs due to an exhaust leak. Anyway, I have removed all the air ducting, the coolant and oil lines and heat shield for the front turbo. I have unbolted it from the exh. manifold. According to the workshop manual, it says you should drop the turbo down (and I assume off the exhaust manifold), then undo the exh. manifold, then remove both the manifold and turbo. Problem is I can't quite get the turbo to completely free itself from the exhaust manifold: the studs are catching and need a good 1cm more to clear. It feels like the front of the turbo is fouling on part of the aircon system. Any hints/tips? Is there something I have missed? Is it just a question of getting the exh. manifold off and then being able to seperate the two? Cheers, Lucien.

If anyone finds a good -- cheap -- source for the Trust/Greddys, say so. I have been told that Advan in Silverwater is meant to be fairly good in this regard. Edit: Don't just say Nengun/Greenline: I think we are all aware of them. Exhaust parts are big and bulky, so shipping (individual items) is expensive so local pricing is not always so bad. LW.

jlnewton: I seem to remember some mentions of the CES units cracking. This was quite awhile ago though. (Just to be clear, I have no personal knowledge of this). LW.

There is no doubt that you raise an important point: both the piston brands he sells come out reasonably well. I still think that as long as you only use it as one piece of evidence it can be quite useful. There are also a number of threads across a range of forum about the comparison. Its worth doing a search on google to see some of the points made. Its also intersting what you said about hardness: are there any other obvious metrics missing from that test that you can see? Regardless, as I said I found it "interesting", but not the final word Edit: I should also say, that at least the guy is upfront that he sells those pistons although you might argue with how he rationalises that Lucien.
-
Yup: its certainly an interesting comparison. I would love to see a similar one done with a few of the big brand Japanese (eg. HKS, Tomei, etc) thrown in for RBs. Unfortunately I doubt anyone has the resources (either money or equipment) to do it. LW.
-
That's a little confusing. The wire plug is different, got it, but what's that about the screw fitting? Are you saying that these Ford EL 02 sensors will not work in R32 GT-Rs because the screw fitting -- I assume you mean the thread on the dump pipe -- is different? Lucien.
-
I found this comparison quite interesting (keeping in mind its for Honda pistons, not Nissan RB-series): http://www.importbuilders.com/pistoncomparo.html LW.
-
Well, for RB26s there is the Greddy split front/extension pipes... which probably work out cheaper, particularly if you want the CES's coated (the Greddys are stainless). LW.
-
That's amusing given that Australia also has dB limits as well. By that reasoning, all exhausts in Australia must be "restrictive" or "way too loud". I smell a sales pitch. To give CES their dues, they are well regarded if expensive. DAN00H: I was under the impression the CES dumps had a longer split than the HKS units, or is that wrong? LW.

Turbo/Manifold Stud Size/Pitch/Length
lwells replied to lwells's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Thanks Steve, appreciated. The different part number could just b related to what comes in the package (ie. it might have the spring washers), however Nathan knows his stuff so I am inclined to think he is right that the turbo->manifold studs are different (ie. different thread at each end). If all else fails I will try and get one of the turbos off tomorrow before midday in the hope some shops around here (Wollongong) are still open. Lucien. -
Turbo/Manifold Stud Size/Pitch/Length
lwells replied to lwells's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Thanks for that Steve: is that the turbo/manifold or turbo/dump studs (or are they all the same)?. I spoke to Nathan @ Grey Imports and he mentioned that one side is course thread (1.5mm) and the other is fine (1.25). Is the pitch the same on both ends of the R34 turbo studs. Lucien. -
Turbo/Manifold Stud Size/Pitch/Length
lwells replied to lwells's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Yeah, as per the other thread, I ran the part numbers by Crows Nest Nissan (hence I found out for the the 8 turbo->manifold studs/nuts it would be ~$200). I agree it means the width is the same. And I think your right about them being M8s too. Hmph. LW. -
I have the fuel filter sitting in front of me. The part number your need is 16400-53J10. It lists the RB26 for R32/33/34 amongst the suitable applications. It does not list the R33 or R34 RB25s (though its lists the RB20D/E/T and RB25DE in the R32 as suitable). Cheers, Lucien.

Turbo/Manifold Stud Size/Pitch/Length
lwells replied to lwells's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Yes, sorry, I was racing around and didn't have time to reply. Again, I can't see any description for the pitch or size in the R33 manual, just like the R32 (unless I am blind). I guess it just assumes you will be purchasing them from Nissan. LW. -
Turbo/Manifold Stud Size/Pitch/Length
lwells replied to lwells's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Trust me, I don't want to reuse the studs/nuts. So these M10 1.25s are actually for the exh manifold->head? I just need to know exactly what the specs are for the turbo->manifold and turbo->dump studs. LW. -
Turbo/Manifold Stud Size/Pitch/Length
lwells replied to lwells's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Oh dear. The turbo to dumps are M10 according to GCG: wouldn't it make sense that the manifold to turbo one is also M10 (he says, looking at the M10 studs he just bought)? blackrb20silvia: reakon you could line up that stud against a print out of the thread pitch chart I posted (about 4 posts up)? When printing in Acrobat, make sure scaling is set to None.... Edit: and the studs I just got are about 52mm long. Hopefully long enough LW. -
Turbo/Manifold Stud Size/Pitch/Length
lwells replied to lwells's topic in Engines & Forced Induction
Richard: I have spoken to Lee Bros. already. They don't have a stud with 1.25mm pitch on both ends, but if I get desperate the can help with a 60mm stud. My problem is I need the studs before I take the car apart. I won't bore you with why, but if I take things apart and don't have the right studs I basically have to dump the car for two weeks. Anyway, spoke to a muffler shop in Leichhardt and he reakons he has the right studs so I will try there first Lucien.
