I'm deciding between a R32/R33 GTR or a Mitsubishi GTO (or 3000GT whatever its called) but recently just found out pre-1996 GTO cannot be imported which rules out the pop-up headlight front end
Can anyone quote a route estimate of what an importer may charge? I might call around soon but I'm really keen on going through the process myself just see what its like...a learning experience. And No, I won't be going to Japan to inspect the car, if the pictures look good and the cabin/engine bay clean then that's good enough for me.
Who's Iron Chef?

Hey Guys/Girls,
I'm in the process of making up my mind on importing a car from Japan but read on VicRoads website that cars after 1988 can't be imported unless its a personal import or by a registered shop.
Eligibility
Only a Registered Automotive Workshop can import a vehicle that is manufactured after 1988 and that is not a personal import.
If you wish to personally import a vehicle you must:
- be of driving age
- be an Australian citizen or a migrant holding permanent residency in Australia
- have owned and used the vehicle while overseas for a period of not less than twelve consecutive calendar months
- not have imported another vehicle into Australia in this category in the last 12 months.
So where does this leave the average joe who hasn't owned the car for 12 months overseas or doesn't own a workshop? or does the above quote only apply to less than 15 year old cars?
Obviously I don't wish to dish out a couple of G's for someone to do the importing for me, I've looked it up and it can be done quite easily.
Any help would be much appreciated.

OK, getting more confused than before so just paid the damn thing. ahhh the beauty of online payment...it doesn't hurt as much as dishing out cold hard earn cash and handing it over the counter, lol, but still there goes my F1 Grand Prix ticket
-
lol, thought someone may mention that
but the seriousness of it is not the concern but the fact that if it will be recorded or not...so will it? lol
-
Some good thought here, thanks
well I guess if you guys put it that it doesn't sound like I got hard done. Gonna pay it off then.
BTW, does this type of infringement get recorded in your record?

Hey fellas,
Kinda dumb question but I wanted to know if you can get fined in a non-metered parking spot? I remember people mentioning Parking Officers marking tyres? Well I left my car in the city between apartments in a 1/4P for a while, 3 hours and 38 minutes to be exact according to the in-ground sensors, which is when the officer issued the fine of $72.
I wrote a letter and my defense was that on that hot day I got stuff in traffic and car had overheated so I allowed for it to cool down before driving it again (the camera in the street can verify this). I didn't call for tow truck or have proof of mechanical repair which is what they want to see as proof to re-review the infringement.
Not sure if they'll accept a second letter but if I write saying all I did was top up the cooling system and had no mechanical work done to it yet, will it be reasonable? or just bite the bullet and pay the damn thing?
Fine is due this Friday the 7th so any input is appreciated

Sad to hear about you being put in this shitty situation...got a feeling those scumbags must've been following this thread as it happened after you dropped off your car. Hopefully it works out for you as you spent quite some effort into this build. Anyone that causes others grief should get testicular cancer

^^ Feck me.. im sure glad i dont live in victoria.
Well said
I feel as though they are interferring and harrassing too much with people's daily lives. I can just imagine people with 'V' masks taking to the streets as this sh*ts bound to backfire sooner or later when people realize their freedom is being chipped away. Before you weren't safe on the roads and now carwash??? What's next, your own driveway?
-
I feel for you man but glad it worked out in your favour. I've had my share good and bad cops as well and the bad ones are only interested in meeting their daily quota but with a horrible attitude. It is those low life drop kicks that make driving suck and everytime you get out, you're just waiting for some cockroach to ruin your day. Any cop that acts unfair, I hope karma gives them a visit.
I still believe this anti-hoon, tariffs, RWC changes, targeting imports and P-plater laws were brought in to increase sales of local cars. All those dodgy mofos from politicians, car manufacturers down to cops pestering us drivers are in this. No harm in supporting the local economy but when the local manufacturers start making cars worthy of its price tag and equal in quality to Euros and Japs, I'll be the first to place an order.

Know what you mean Geoff. I'm hoping that it was just this one guy that didn't know what he was doing.

Thanks guys. The car was working 100% before as buyer test drove a couple of days before and the inspector warmed the car before he started tinkering. The buyer witnessed everything and did say that they'll help me out if I decide to take it further as in the end they were charged for the half-ass report.
The inspector does admit disconnecting but says he's unable to help as he's not a mechanic. What really bothered me was that he left the car after he couldn't get it running again (said its not his fault) and the lady at their office was ridiculously rude and un-supportive, not to mention losing my buyers and a dead car.
I know in the end it'll cost me time and money and won't get me anywhere. Consumer services are a joke. I'll keep nudging them though, but they seem to have made up their mind. Might get someone to have a look at the car soon.
Without the other side you never know the full picture anyway.
Other side goes something like this:
'I opened the bonnet and unplugged a connector I had no idea about. Then I cranked the car, but engine didn't fire. So I decided to disconnect another connector and crank the car but no luck either. I plug connectors back in and car doesn't start. So I jump into my car and go home since its not my problem.'

Buyers/Sellers BEAWARE of StateRoads
Just a heads up for potential buyers/sellers when requesting a vehicle inspection before purchase by StateRoads. The one in question is the Victoria branch. I had a buyer ask them to inspected my vehicle.
Their inspection is ONLY via hearing and visual checks, not dismantling components as stated in
their policy.
The inspector named Reece started disconnecting random connectors in the engine bay and cranking the engine after
each component was disconnected. After that the car wouldn't start even when everything was connected.
The inspector said that starting the car is not part of his job nor does he know what the problem is.
He jumped into his car and stormed off. Buyer was not interested anymore and I was left with a dead car.
I called the office and spoke to a Jo who asked me to email what happened, so I did. The next morning
she calls back and very rudely starting blasting at me that the vehicle is not their liability and
there not responsible for it, take us to court if you want and hanged up. That is all she said. I was shocked.
Called the office straight after and asked for manager but he was "away". Ended up speaking with someone who
was talking crap without even knowing what happened. He said he'll contact the inspector to call you.
Inspector calls and says that while he was disconnecting connectors 'someone' else may have cranked the car
which stuffed up the car. His story completely changed and started calling me a liar. Also said that he's not
a mechanic and cannot help.
I've lost my buyers and ended up with a dead car.
These guys are the worst people I have ever come across in my life. Both on a work level and simple manners.
I've never had any problems with RACV. The StateRoads employees that handled this situation are simply scums of sewers.
Posted this so nobody else should suffer like I did.

Personal Import
in Victoria
Posted
I take it no one here has imported one themselves who could tell us about the process?
Several years ago when I was really keen on a FC RX7 I researched the import process like a Phd Thesis, pretty much got all the dots lined up. The place you buy it from in Japan normally have their own or recommended transport and so landing in at an Australian dock is no big deal. Even the paperwork to get it cleared from the docks is very doable if you plan it in advance. What I mean to say is, the process is pretty straight forward if you sit down and do the homework.
That's true actually, normally I just double the price in Japan to get an estimate when comparing to local cars.
Yeah I haven't heard of him before. If I were to buy I'd buy directly from the seller in Japan, no middle man.
That's what I mean, if you don't sit down and do the homework then you're bound for headaches, if you research the process and plan out the process, it'll be a cakewalk.
