New Motorsport Complex Or Mike Ranns Hoon Laws
GROWLY CUSTOM CNC replied to JMW's topic in South Australia
Here is some more info :- LAUREN NOVAK TRANSPORT REPORTER February 14, 2008 12:30am AN UNDISCLOSED consortium of wealthy Adelaide investors is ready to build a $25 million-plus motorsport complex in Adelaide. Featuring a drag racing strip, speedway, race circuit and jet boat racing, the complex is expected to be up and running in about 15 months. Spokeswoman for the consortium, Anna Micheel, said the three mystery investors were working with the Land Management Corporation to secure a site in the north or north-western suburbs within the next three months. About 120ha would be needed. "We're hoping to have the first stage up and running within 12 months (after that)," she said. A former manager of Adelaide International Raceway at Virginia, Ms Micheel would not name the investors but described them as "leading business people within Adelaide who are very passionate motorsport enthusiasts and definitely have the money". Ms Micheel said the privately-funded hub would include a "business park" for supporting industries and could also provide "a service to the community" as a training ground for emergency service vehicles, driving schools and a concert venue. "There is no other venue (in Australia) that can house the number of motorsport events that they wish to house," she said. "It's something that Adelaide desperately needs." Australian National Drag Racing Association chief executive officer Tony Thornton said Perth, Sydney and Ispwich had top drag racing venues and a new complex would be built in Melbourne by late next year but Adelaide was missing out. A drag strip in Adelaide would "link up the national chain", he said. Mr Thornton hoped the venue also would improve road safety by holding regular amateur competitions. "There are lots of young people doing increasingly stupid things on the road and having access to a drag strip to have a go almost whenever they want isn't going to eradicate it (hoon driving) but it provides a safer option," he said. Since the opening of the Western Sydney International Dragway NSW police said illegal street racing "has been non-existent" in the area. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you want a place to drift, drag and participate in driver training make sure you all back this group. There is no reason why we can't have 20,000 people attending the next public rally. -

Don't worry about finding other places to start a drag strip, if we all stand together and support the current Pt Adelaide bid it will happen. If you didn't make the last public rally here is a write up :- Despite temperatures of over 40 degrees, an estimated 10,000 people passed through a display of Adelaide based drag racing vehicles in the centre of Port Adelaide yesterday, in a solid show of support for Australia's quickest and fastest motor sport. The display, organised by local racers Roc Puccini and Scott Ferguson, with financial support from the Combined Drag Racing Clubs, was put together with little notice after Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Gary Johanson made the Todd Street site available. Adelaide has been without national standard drag racing facilities since the late nineties. The recent announcement that a local group is planning to develop a new venue, preferably in the Port Adelaide Enfield region, prompted the display and the great response from local competitors. In the days prior to the display over 150 South Australian businesses registered an expected economic benefit from a new drag racing venue in Adelaide. Thirty five teams presented cars and motorcycles covering every ANDRA Group One bracket and all other areas of drag racing. Because of the break of nearly eight years in Adelaide there were some fans seeing the cars up close for the first time. Anna Micheel, speaking on behalf of the development group, said plans for the new dragstrip would incorporate separate facilities for other motor sports, including a circuit. Initial funding was confirmed and positive negotiations with the SA Government over a suitable site were proceeding. "There has been a perception that drag racing in Adelaide has fallen away, but today's response clearly shows that's not the case." said ANDRA Director for SA, Harry White. "Even after the break we've had, over 250 racers remain listed with ANDRA. There are many others with cars and motorcycles in storage and support for our regional series covering the Coonawarra, Whyalla and Mildura remains strong." "It's also important to consider the options the new venue will deliver to young drivers." White went on to say. "Drag strips in other major capitals now provide up to 50 mid week off-street drag racing events each year, which has reduced the incidence of hoon activities in surrounding areas." ANDRA CEO Tony Thornton told the crowd that Adelaide was a key factor in the national operation of the sport. "Due mainly to the consistent operation of Willowbank Raceway, drag racing in Queensland has grown steadily over the past 24 years. The new venues in Sydney and Perth, which have enjoyed strong Government support, have generated record levels of interest in ANDRA Drag Racing over the past seven years and we expect a fantastic result in Adelaide." Thornton said Adelaide had proved to be a great host to major events of all types, and its motor sport credentials were among the country's best. "As well as safer options for young drivers, fresh entertainment and recreational options, positive economic benefits and employment opportunities, a new Adelaide drag racing facility would be well placed to stage a major national drag racing event." For further information contact ANDRA on 08 8271 5355 or at [email protected] ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At least there are a few politicians thinking with a clear head. Mark Butler has my vote for premier. Mark Butler (Port Adelaide, Australian Labor Party) On a hot Sunday in March, around 10,000 people attended a display in Port Adelaide of Adelaide based drag-racing vehicles. This remarkable turnout to a display of these cars when they were not even moving shows how desperate we in Adelaide are to get a national drag-racing facility built in our city. The sad fact is that the many thousands of drag-racing enthusiasts in Adelaide have been unable to attend live drag-racing of any significance for almost a decade. At the same time, we have seen drag-racing go from strength to strength in Western Sydney, in Perth and in Ipswich in Brisbane, as well as in some smaller centres such as the Hidden Valley drag strip in Darwin, which is strongly supported by my colleague the member for Solomon. I speak today on this issue to pay tribute to the persistence of the Australian National Drag-Racing Association, ANDRA, in their campaign to get a national drag strip in Adelaide. It is a campaign that I strongly support and one that has been driven by some committed businessmen and drag-racing enthusiasts, otherwise known as petrolheads. ANDRA is delegated by CAMS, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport, to control drag-racing in Australia. In order to attract the best teams to national events held in Adelaide, it seems to me fairly obvious that a drag strip in Adelaide should have its sanction. A new ANDRA venue in Adelaide would be able to offer up to 70 organised events each year. Those events could include six national open events, at least four of which would have national significance, and one of which would be a major national championship event, attracting the major teams from all around Australia. In between those events, ANDRA would be able to hold lower level competition racing and regular off-street legal drag-racing to cater for local youth. Experience from other states is that these events provide local youth with the opportunity to race in a safe and secure environment rather than engaging in illegal drags on our public roads. That has been the experience in Darwin, with the Beat the Heat off-street program at Hidden Valley. It is an experience advocated strongly by the police in Western Sydney. I have received correspondence from the sergeant of the Blacktown traffic services, based in that area, where he says: With the introduction of the Wednesday off street meets at Western Sydney International Dragway, the instances of illegal street racing within the Blacktown LGA has been non existent for the reason that the participants of these illegal street meets have a place to attend and participate safely in their chosen sport ... It is also clear that the establishment of a national drag strip in Adelaide would have significant economic and tourism benefits for our state. On average, attendance at ANDRA national championships ranges around Australia from 25,000 to 35,000—and these extend to up to three to four days. The time has come to bring off-street drag-racing back to Adelaide. I have read the blogs on the internet that show thousands of South Australians queuing up to fill a national drag strip. I will do all that I can do to support them and the thousands of South Australians who love the smell of burning rubber. -

It wouldn't be too hard to organise just get in touch with the people who run the last rally. The public rally in Pt Adelaide was very professionally run. Guest speakers included members of parliament, the mayor of Pt Adelaide etc... . I don't know all the facts but we ain't asking for the government to build the new motor sports park. There is a group of business men who have already raised the money needed, they just need the green light to start. If I'm wrong please correct me. You can't compare mallala to what is planed :- A world class motor sport facility incorporating a drag strip, burnout pad, drift/circuit track, jet boats and a dedicated motor sport business precinct. All they need is public support. It is not just the drivers who use the facilities that will benefit it will also support the many businesses (my self included) that rely on motor sport. -

Not a bad idea. Why not hold a public rally like the one organised last year at pt Adelaide except hold it at parliament house on Saturday night. Organise the general public, motor sport and car clubs to attend. Lets show mister Rann how many of his voters are car enthusiasts. If you want publicity blocking off Nth Terrace with 1000 + cars for several hours on Saturday night will definatly make the front page. If mike doesn't respond do it again the following weekend. The time is right to push the government on this issue. -

Does any one else want a rule book. I have run out due to the high demand but I can send you a photocopied version. We weren't sure how much interest this sport would generate down here but over the last week or so we are on track to have at least 75-100 cars racing by 2010. Matt -

Good to hear from some Roxby guys. For sure if you want to compete against any of the top cars from up there you'll need a bit more than a grand in your pocket, especially if you racing guys like Wobbly & Geoff Munro, big hp cars and a big set of balls to push the cars as hard as they do . Hopefully next year we can bring a few of these Adelaide boys up to give the Roxby crue a bit of competition . I've been looking for a picture of Ricks insane blown RX-7, how about posting one up. No worries, I can give you a rule book so you have some idea of what is involved. Pm me your address and phone number and I will mail one out. Cheers Matt -

PM me your postal address and a phone number and I will send one out. There are no jags out there yet, but there are a few openwheelers with your running gear. I recon your jag would be fairly competative, it would definatly be hard to pass when you throw it sideways into the corners. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- No worries Matt. My machine has been down for a while and I have only just got it up and running. In july there will be an open day so if any one is keen to see these cars do some laps you are more than welcome. Cheers -

The new class will be run with all cars being to the same specs as when they came from the factory, but you can run a welded or locked diff. Don't worry too much about suspension most of the modified cars still run reasonably soft suspension. the biggest gains are from finding the right tyre presures. If you already have a old street car with some mods, it will fit straight into modified saloons. Because of the expected amount of cars and varying performance, we may even split the modified saloons / openwheelers in to a separate A and B class. Good to see a fellow Legnum owner :- do you own the white legnum seen around windsor gardens. -
Hello everyone, Just putting the word out :- there is a new form of motor sport starting close to Adelaide in the near future, with a track currently being built at Dutton aprox 85 km from the cbd . If you haven't heard of Dirt circuit, it is the cheapest form of organised motor sport in S.A and also one of the largest with over 300 cars competeing. Dirtcircuit is a truly unique sport which combines elements from many motor sports :- the sideways action of drift, speedway & rally, the straight line speed of the drags and the driving techniques of circuit racing. There are currently 9 specially constructed dirt circuit tracks in regonal South Australia that range in length from 700m to 1000m. Features of the tracks include chicanes, hairpins, sweepers, long and short straights ect... . Track layouts allow most cars to hit top speeds of between 140-200 kph. Tracks are constructed of clay, limestone or an oil impregnated surface. . Racing is run with up to 10 cars competing in 6 lap sprint races, in both directions. Every driver participates in 5 races per meeting including a 10 lap allcomers race. In all classes there is a aprox 30+ races per meeting. Due to the racing format a car can have two drivers, which halves the cost of racing if you build a car with a mate. Kids as young as 10 can drive in restricted childerens races. The classes are as follows :- Standard class :- HQ shape holdens, early falcons up to 202 ci. No mods allowed. New standard class :- VN -VT and equivelant falcons. No mods allowed ( Cars can be built for $1000 or less in this class ) Street stock :- Carby cars up to 265 ci, valiants, falcons, commodores ect.. . Mods:- 350 cfm carbies, aftermarket cams and extractors, original engine position and no fibre glass panels. Modified saloon :- Anything goes in this class :- Steel bodied cars , space frames, fibre glass bodys, standard, mid or rear mounted engines, turbos, blowers, injection, any vehicle engine combo eg :- 400 ci chev mid mounted in a Datsun 180 B ( don't laugh there are a few v8 powerded datsuns out there ). Cars in this class range from cheap wrecking yard racers to 600+ hp ,supercharged, spaced framed sedans and yes the 100 hp cars do occasionally battle it out in the same race with the 600hp cars. This class caters for all budgets again a car could bee built for less than $1000. Open wheelers :- Again anything goes. No restrictions on engines, running gear ect.. . This class allows you to build a unique chassis / race car of your own design. Many cars run mid mounted V8s, auto transmissions, 9" diff or irs. There are now alot of turbo jap cars being built to give the v8's a run for thier money. These cars normally weigh between 600kg - 1000kg, so even with a standard engine you can achieve a great power to weight ratio. Its not unheard of for people to build cars exceeding a v8 supercar power to weight ratio for much less than $10k. Here the best part, subs for the year costs only $20-00 per driver, there is a $10 nomination fee for each race meeting and we don't charge an arm or a leg to spectate :- Adults entery fee is only $5-00 at the gate . There will be a total of nine race meetings a year at the new club, but if you have the time you could race every weekend at any of the other 9 tracks. Each year there are 2 rounds of the State championships which is rotated between clubs. If any one in the Metro area is interested in racing dirt circuit, we can volunteer experienced drivers to help you build a car and even source cheap materials and parts to get you out on the track. If you want any other information please call Matt on 0447739992 or email [email protected] . There will be a free open day at the track in July for all those that are interested. We should have a good mixture of all types of cars racing and on display. I will put another post up when I have a firm date for the open day. Cheers Matt Stirling Here a few pictures :-
