That is just amazing what they're managing to do reverse engineering the OS like that. I can see custom MFD screens on the horizon in the foreseeable future! Run everything including map switching from a custom GUI all controlled via the touch screen! How neat would that be.... And agree fully on using the factory ECU over aftermarket. Why stuff around with all the factory settings that do not need to be changed once you can do everything that you need with the OEM ECU.

When "LC2" was released the big bonus was that you didn't need to turn VDC off to use it. I consistently get 3000 rpm on the tacho when I take off with VDC set to R.

What have you guys been working on in that skunkworks of yours? Spotted on the Mt Gambier Legend of the Lakes Hillclimb entry list. 93 15/07/2010 345 Mr Keir Wilson Road Registered - Over 2001cc PORSCHE GTR - 2008 - 3800cc - T/Y - S/N http://seacsa.com/web_supp_entry/ENTRIES%20BY%20CLASS.pdf

You can use this http://www.discountcarstereo.com/detail.aspx?ID=1267 to install front and rear cams to your GTR. It is a plug and play installation whereby it intercepts the loom going into the back of your display and allows you two composite (NTSC) inputs selectable manually by a switch or by the engagement of reverse. It will allow you to play DVD's etc instead of the 2nd cam if you prefer. It converts the composite video into RGBS that the car's display uses. Very elegant solution. Cams cost all of $30 from ebay or you can go for the factory one for around $200 I believe. This one requires removal of the bumper for installation apparently so I just went for something that bolts to a bracket attached to a plate I sandwiched behind the number plate.

Managed to do it. You pull upwards and backwards quite firmly and it comes out. If you pull up you'll break the pawls. If you pull back you prob might not break them but it requires significantly more force. Simple info like this in the manuals would make life a lot simpler!
-
Thanks but I've already got the manual. It's just not terribly descriptive about how to "disengage" the front pawls....

Im in the process of installing a reverse and front cam and want to access accessory power and figure one of the easiest spots may be the back of the power socket in the centre console. I've popped the rear of the rear console up but for the life of me cannot disengage the front pawls which engage into the rear of the front section of the console. I don't want to force it. How do the front pawls lock into the front centre console? Do I pull the sides of the rear console out or rearwards or upwards? I had no difficulty with any of the dash panels! Any help would be much appreciated.

$5K to insure a car is definitely too much when others are getting the same car insured for less than $2K. Mind you, they have much better driving records which is the sole (good) reason he's been quoted such an amount. You cannot directly compare premiums as a percentage of the purchase price of the car for different value cars simply because exotic cars are generally operated differently to "normal" cars. This is because; a) They do less kms, b) The owners do not park or garage them in risky places due to generally having other cars to use whenever the need arises and c) They are usually driven more carefully due to their inherent value. Mind you, I still think your accident record is what should be the major factor in determining your premium, not whether or not you've been caught doing 55 in a 50 zone a few times in the past couple years. I wonder what his premium would be if he'd had a few accidents in the past couple years as distinct from getting caught speeding.

I know! When I saw there were no helmets in sight my heart sank as I really thought they'd be pussyfooting around the circuit or asking us to travel at "80%", (whatever that means), but when it came to the crunch we were allowed to go our hardest. (Or at least as hard as our experienced passengers would let us before starting to make uncomfortable noises!)

What a blast! As much as the weather was crap on the Thursday I attended, it upped the fun factor as we slip slided around an incredible circuit especially since I'd never even visited PI let alone driven on it before yesterday. Such a different character to Mallalla with all it's stop start and tight hairpins. It's also good that the only damage done to any cars was a bent rim on the Wed when someone put one into a sand trap at 150 KPH off turn 2. This means Nissan will be more likely to hold further events on a state by state basis in the future as they alluded to yesterday when questioned on the likelihood of doing it again. I think the organisers were quite surprised at the passion and enthusiasm of the attendees and even Steve Pizzatti who does heaps of driver training for Porsche and the like commented on how he thought the GTR owners were the most passionate about their cars than any other type of owner.

Could you imagine taking someone on at the traffic lights using this "brake release" technique You would have to be pretty good at anticipating the light change. I suppose a sportsman christmas tree makes it easier.... I'd just wait for the new Cobb release that allows you to dial in whatever revs you like to launch on.

Woohoooo! I got Thu morning Graeme but am willing to swap with anyone on Thursday afternoon. Any takers? Did you swap through Nissan or with someone you know? If I get the Thu afternoon I can get back from Los Angeles that morning and still make the afternoon session otherwise I have to fly back a day earlier (Wed) in order to make the morning session the following day. I'll contact Renee in the morning and see if she can move my session. I haven't even begun to look at flights back to Adelaide that night but will be happy to share a rental with you guys especially if it helps get me back to Adel Thu night.
-
Thanks Graeme. As it stands I'm happy to shorten an OS trip if I can get on it!

Think it's time to fit Willall's waterspray kit Duncan!

Shouldn't be a problem running a non RFT if you carry a bottle of sealant and a compressor with you ala Porsche 911. I do anyway even with the RFT's so I can repair them if I get a flat which I've had to do twice. The ride should be smoother and unsprung weight should come down significantly using a conventional tyre. Not sure about insurance hassles if you switch to a non RFT though. I'm seriously considering the Pirelli as well for my next change. If you're considering swapping to a non-RFT anyway you may even consider going to 295/30-20 and 255/35-20 non RFT which has a slightly lower sidewall which should be compensated for by the more compliant non RFT construction which hopefully wont give a worse ride than the standard RFT tyres. These size tyres are half the price of the DSST600 and Bridgestone. This opens you up to a range of Goodyear F1's, Continentals, Sumitomos, Hankooks and Michelins.

Missed out. If anyone has to pull out for whatever reason please PM me!!

All states got an allocation but they were so shocked by the response, (go figure hey?), that they will look at holding other days like it.

I received mine today.

Don't use exhaust pipe colour to assist in tuning an unleaded car. Doesn't work like the pre-cat days any more. Even properly running cars will blacken the exhaust tips, even after a country trip where they're running at stoich the whole way.

Ive done 24K now and have found that a lot of the drivetrain shunting, grabbing and binding as reported when the cars were new has gone. All that remains is slightly noisy 1st and 2nd gears compared with other cars and I suspect a lot of that has to do with minimal sound deadening material rather than an inherently noisy trans. I've always found that transmissions have the most pronounced "running in" improvement in all my new cars and this one is no exception.
-
I use paddles when I'm not on the phone or chatting with a passenger, otherwise just trundle along in Auto. But I find it way smoother just slowly driving in Auto, so smooth that if you didn't hear the motor you wouldn't know it had changed gear. When I'm hard into it it changes so hard sometimes that I see the traction control light kick in on the 1st to 2nd change when it's set to standard VDC setting. (Then again that could be a symptom of my overly eager VDC which I've discussed elsewhere.)

Recently I was driving along some sweeping hills roads with the cruise control set at approx 117KPH. I would go around 75 and 85 KPH signposted corners without needing to disengage the cruise but found that the VDC (in Race mode) would trigger on right hand turns with as low as 0.3G showing on the steering diplay. The cruise control would then deactivate. Very annoying to say the least when you are just loping along at relatively slow speeds around these high radius bends. Left hand turns required around 0.7-0.9 G for the VDC to cut in and cruise control to cut out depending on the bumpiness of the road. I took it to Nissan for its 12 month POS inspection and was told that there was a "soft" fault code logged for the G sensor indicating a previous fault condition but it was not indicating the hard fault when checked. The service manager surmised that if the system is showing a soft code then the BCM may invoke a mode where the G's threshold required for VDC to start intervening is lowered. They cleared the DTC and I went on my way. I took it for another spin last weekend and initially it appeared to be OK but by the end of the trip it was back to its old tricks. I haven't yet taken it back to see if that soft code has reappeared but would like to know other's experiences. Can you cruise along these kind of country roads without the cruise control cutting out on corners with as low as 0.3G? The assymetric nature of the phenomenon has me convinced there is a problem with the G sensor and I am curious to see if the G sensor DTC is back when I take it back in.

In that case it should be a tad cheaper than a super silver. I think the "middle" cost colours were $1750 extra from memory. And I believe Qld stamp duty is now similar to SA stamp duty now just a fraction lower. So overall you should still be looking at around $180K. You will love it.... Went on an Adelaide hills cruise with my old WRXSA car club today. Those guys don't hang about. When I had my STi I can remember following a Gallardo through the roads near Mt Lofty who was preparing for the Classic Adelaide and through the tight twisties the width of the Lambo meant the subies were swarming all over him as he had no lane width to play with. I felt a little like that with the GT-R but to nowhere near the same extent. But once we hit the wider sweeping roads further out west what used to be a struggle to keep up with their seriously modded cars in my standard STi became no competition in the GT-R. I even asked them if they're taking it a little easier nowdays due to worries about increased policing and they said "no way, were going as hard as we ever did!" So if you're buying this car to enjoy "spirited driving " which from the sounds of it you are, you will have a ball.

It may not be illegal to charge over RRP but I know Nissan Aust would have something to say about it! The way the dealers screwed us at the start was by making the dealer delivery $10K! Nissan couldn't stop them doing this and the dealer's justification was that they needed to "tool up" their workshops for the GT-R. It was just another $10K cream on top of their margins. I'd love for you to have asked the dealer for the breakdown of the pricing because short of him having a DD of $20K I cannot see how he could arrive at that price. Unless you're in WA of course and your stamp duty is sky high. The quote must always show the car at RRP plus DD plus rego and Stamp duty etc etc otherwise they'd be going against Nissan Aust policy of not selling over RRP....... And this info was from the dealer's own mouth when he indicated that some people were prepared to pay $20K over sticker just to be the first kid on the block with one. He said they couldnt entertain the thought however appealing it may have been. I guess they always could have just charged $30K DD! I mean Nissan let them get away with $10K didn't they? Still ludicrous, just more ludicrous....
