    You don't need to be able to make out plates unless it's a hit and run you're trying to capture, in which case the orher vehicle will come close enough to you to make out plates anyway. These things are about capturing moments leading up to the accident and the accident. The ones with gps are also handy for proving innocence with dud speeding fines too.
