As for rentals, there's good reasons to rent, but don't fool yourself into thinking it's financially better over the long term than paying a mortgage, unless your interest is more than a month's rent for the same kind of place (unlikely). The 10% of the market who could afford in that scenario are pretty much the ones who have been driving it up in the first place. They have disproportionately expansive wealth compared to the rest. I agree it will slow down eventually, but for other variables, like a downtrend in foreign investment. I think majority market affordability will have little to do with it, without government intervention. Also the more Melbourne sprawls, the more inner suburban properties will push up by virtue of comparison. I think it's gonna take a recession or a serious drop off in the rentals market to stop this train.

That dude was for sure a scam at the start too though...would have taken his money and run. I think the point of the video was to show that at least some are doing it out of desperation / a lack of skill and opportunity, rather than laziness or greed...and that if given the opportunity to work for an honest buck and make a difference to their shitty lives and communities, some probably would. I wonder what the success rate would be if it were able to be tried on more scammers, as I doubt by sheer luck he came across the only malleable guy.

Like the guy who offered to buy my CSGO knife through PayPal for more than it costs to buy one on the steam market (1st redlight). He made an effort to tell me he'd do it with no chargebacks so that I couldn't be scammed (2nd red light). Told him to buy it off me through steam marketplace and he said it was too hard to add money to the steam wallet (3rd red light) - you do this through 4-5 clicks and PayPal lol. By that point I was just having fun with him breaking down his excuses, but remained defiant until the end that he wasn't trying to scam me.

Scammers typically succeed with two mentalities of victims: desperation and/or opportunity chasing. If they can't capitalise on someone's desperation, they will try to create an offer they won't refuse (opportunity). Both emotions blind victims to even obvious telltales of it being a scam. Trick here is to never let an opportunity or desperate situation leverage what you would ordinarily be willing to do were it not an enticing offer.
