  1. The main problem is keeping it out of limp mode, keeping the camshafts and throttle operating. Manual 6spd should work if I leave the AT ecu there and trick it, otherwise there may be a link G4 going in.
  2. I have, the afm will drift if oil and dust stick to the sensor but the o2 will readjust to some extent on the stock computer. You are right, not much oil is required but they come soaked in the stuff from the factory. Cheaper and easier imo to just stick a blitz cotton one in.
  3. It could be that your clutches are worn, the box is 10 years old remember. Does it bang into any gear? No clunks? What fluid did he use? There are a few tricks to installing the re5 kits, and it is possible he mixed the springs up when he lost the 'missing' one. What did he charge you if you don't mind telling us?
  4. It has to be me doing all the hard work again, doesn't it Iain. Whilst I am confident it could be done, the controllers on the market have no guarantee they will work, and at a cost of around $1000 it's too expensive to gamble on for an auto that still won't handle the track very well. Making my own kit is in the too hard basket, I haven't designed an electronic circuit in 15 years. I have invested too much into the rwd manual conversion now, no turning back. I seriously looked at the awd conversion Tom, the bell housing would have to be cut and shut, and the transfer case would have to be relocated 160mm further back. I may still be able to fit my spare 33 gtr box in there one day but for now the 350z box is so much easier.
  5. I would be happy if it just changed gears properly, the thing just never drops down to a lower gear when asked. An australian market would have shunned it if sold here new imo. Yes it has been made worse by the laggier turbo but that's what the stall converter should remedy. The power holding capabilities are always improving. At the end of the day it's just cooling the fluid enough now. As I have the full workshop manual for the re5, and a few spare boxes, I would most definitely have a crack at tuning a programmable aftermarket controller, if there was one available... There are other options, the re4ro1 is too weak and any other auto will need major modification to fit. Perhaps there will be an awd manual option down the track I can take advantage of but for now I'm stuck with the 350z box. Things could be worse, they are quite strong internally from my research.
  6. And it's still crap. You got it on the dyno yet Tony?
  7. If there was an aftermarket gearbox controller or manualised valve body for the re5 I would think about keeping the auto, Nissan had a retard program the auto ecu unfortunately.
  8. It took about 3-4 hours from memory.
  9. Outdoor hoist will do fine for the moment. I don't think the council will like the hoist let alone a 4M roof over it. lol.
  10. Well, the hoist is installed and today the gearbox came out. I can't believe I was able to remove that huge gearbox by myself, I'm glad I got a transmission jack when I bought the hoist now. I managed to fit up the 6spd to check clearances, I was happy to see the 350z mounts bolted straight up to the stock holes in the floor, and all the engine bolts were right, other than the starter motor holes being out. (due to the turbo) I will have to drop the engine to fit the 350z sump now, no big deal. The starter will have to be relocated to the drivers side. The gearstick hole doesn't line up, I will have to trim it an inch or so longer. I have found some more parts through Nuwan, apparently the brake booster is smaller on the manual to accommodate the clutch master so I have a clutch pedal assy with master, a brake pedal assy with booster and clutch line coming soon. Still searching for the handbrake and console, they will most likely have to come from Japan.
  11. Seriously, just buy another engine for 1k and get him to fit it, that way you have a spare engine and plenty of spare parts.
  12. No worries Fritters, glad to help.
  13. I fitted my own with help from Leon, it isn't that hard mate. Perhaps you could import your own unit?
  14. Nissan have head gaskets in stock so they aren't hard to find. I have two sets here too. What did he charge you for if he didn't stop the oil burning?
  15. The DD is an interesting engine, I have some big power planned for the one I have here. I don't think a set of forged pistons will help it much though, I will be leaving the engine stock and running ethanol. A lot of thought went into the direct injection and chamber design, the piston has a very interesting shape. Half the siamese port intake runners are cut on cruise also, to promote swirl. It will need plenty of custom work to get any power out of it, NA or FI. The engine is similar to the VQ25det electrically, it even runs the same ecu plug (so the Fcon Vpro may work). The main difference is the fuel system, a high pressure fuel pump runs off one of the camshafts with ecu pressure feedback.
  16. Lol @ 100 amps not being enough. I weld at 20 amps most of the time with 1.6mm stainless tube. You just need to grind the gal off the pipe first...
  17. I have seen it affect the tune many times, although other times it is fine. Just because you had no issues doesn't mean everyone will be fine, your car may have even been modified in Japan. The Walbro's are usually problematic which is why I suggest hard wiring them, as that rules out any issues.
  18. Yeh, I wanted to control the oil temp and the trans temp. The other controller I have should display both temps and switch both thermo's on automatically at a preset temp. Probably not required now the manual is a go ahead. Does $50 sound good?
  19. Looking at the undertrays on the website the G35x ones are the same shape as our undertrays. I will take the gamble... No way you would get one locally for that price, I wouldn't even bother making myself one.
  20. I just sent them an email we shall see what they say.
  21. It is still compressor surge numbnutz. It causes the shaft to change speed erratically and load up causing twisting of the shaft. It can't be good for bearing life. I get surge on boost, my GTX hasn't given up yet, although it has surge slots to help take the load off the compressor.
  22. Hylomar gasket spray can, it's good shit... My money is on stretched head studs as Trick mentioned...
