  1. Ahhhhh so you expect it to do everything. I'll be seeing you at the 6 hour then??? Next years Bathurst 12 and 24 hour?

It's amazing what you can do with the right cooling, backing plates, pads, disc metallurgy, fluid........ the standard callipers though are pretty damn good. Why, even Sydneykid stays stock on their IP GTR32 car which actually races for 20-30 laps at a time. That tends to lap faster than the "... full track spec skylines..." that I've come across.

  2. I think I'd probably get the same times from their cars with stock brakes. Car setup is not just a lot of power and massive brakes. But then, what would I know? Maybe I wasted all those years racing, engineering for race teams and swinging spanners in pits. Since Russ is running parts I manufactured in his 32 I probably could have a realistic discussion with him Col. And I've recently been discussing setup with Nathan.

So why do you think they run the brakes they do in V8SC Col? Seriously. I'll tell you if you have it right. Think predictability..........

Someone with a massive brake setup took my GTR for a drive yesterday. Strangely he thought it was pretty damn good, and yet, since it is just my road car and not my dedicated track car I know there are deficiencies in the brakes, and the tyres.

Gervasse, I just took a look at that silver GTR. It would be pretty reliable with a bit less peak power. Steer clear of anything with Teins unless you intend to dump them. They really are a poor product. If you really want a decent track beast then there are much nicer suspension setups, especially if you're considering spending a lot of bucks on a high power car. Feel free to catch up for a chat anytime mate.

  3. Jordan, I'll come along. I'm thinking of selling up when Labour F*CKS the economy, using my money overseas and then coming back once someone with a clue is back in charge.

So what part of Thailand are you off to? I love Koh Samui and Koh Tao.

On the brakes, it's not as simple as just slapping on a set of 6 or 8 piston callipers and everything will be awesome. Anything short of perfectly matching the front and rear clamping pressures with the right sized discs and master cylinder is a recipe for unbalancing the car and disaster.

I've driven so many Skylines with a big brake setup that is just wrong that it isn't funny. The stock brakes are more than capable if you do the right things in the areas of handling, cooling and consumables.

Big brakes are just a wank.

  4. I spotted Peter from P1 Sydney last night on the telly. They had a segment on P1 at the track showing the cars at QR and the opening party for the Qld office.

Must have missed my invites in the mail......... :D

  5. As I said, I could find no differences whatsoever. Not to say I didn't miss something in the housing, but nothing there makes any difference to the operation.

The N1 though is a common enough failure on drag cars banging on the rev limiter. The peaks in the much narrower area of the outer gear ring are typical stress concentrators. Add to that the material for the N1 pump gears has been hardness tested against the stock oil pump gears and was found to be much harder, therefore much more brittle. It is a compromised design which is unfortunate.

  6. I've parked like that before. Well over toward a handicapped park and a metre from the kerb. Was in a Gallardo too

James, the pleasure was all mine. It takes a while to discover what a great machine it is. Effortless and a car for almost all occasions are terms that spring to mind. And the CS (which I understand is Ians' favourite) is just wicked. What a crazy car. Race mode FTW Ian!!!

  7. I haven't got it running at the moment but I was looking in a completely different area with Funkymonkey. It was pretty descriptive.

Springs are linear so it would simply be because a 26 idles faster, but has less oil supply to the head. I've had them both apart, overlayed the gears and they were the same. I didn't have time to test the spring rates but they felt the same.

  8. From my research there is no difference between RB26 and RB25 oil pumps. Same part number in FAST and same flow rate. Don't get ripped of by paying for a "GTR" pump.

A pic of the different oil pumps. I will be completing a document soon on some oil pump info for the forum.

  9. Saw a few nice cars in Sydney while dropping off the Porsche 911 (997) Carrera S Cabriolet (what a mouthful). A nice black Lambo Gallardo, some nice Mercs...then got to P1 Supercars new Sydney Office. Sorry for phone pics.

There was this guy's photo....he's on the far left. Generally known as that guy from P1.

The view out from the office..... L-R Maserati quattroporte, the Porka and the Gallardo spyder

And my taxi to the Casino and the ariel atom up the front of the building

The taxi was of course the Fezza 360 Challenge Stradale. The only silver one in Oz.

  10. Maddo, hard to actually decipher what you are saying but I'll try answer. A little punctuation makes it clearer.

The Water pumps do fail, sometimes without warning. One I saw recently had a chunk of something jam into the impeller so it must have been in the cooling system. The whole front of the housing exploded forward and slammed into the radiator.

The stock balancer is often good enough if you aren't going to try to rev to over 8000. After that I would advise a good HB.

The oil pumps will fail, for many reasons but usually due to having a short pump drive in some early series engines and banging off the rev limiter.

  11. I lived in Canberra for 5 years. I'd have it the same there but yes it is a race car, and I intend to make filter changes easier by making a louvered front panel held on with dzus fasteners http://www.my105.com/catalogue.asp?id=4558 or the like.

Pods though are not as good as people think.

I've used HKS pods and they let a lot of muck through in some designs plus filter poorly. A mate just had a turbo destroyed by a Blitz that let gravel in where he mounted it. About the only foolproof ones are Apexi and even then without a topnotch enclosure they are subject to too much hot air. Calculate how much air is taken in in eack cycle of the engine, then times that by RPM then wonder how much enters every minute. Compare that to the size of the engine bay and no surprise they will be sucking a massive amount of hot air.

I hate pods, but I'm only an engineer specialising in race setups and weapons systems.......

  12. The primary reason a GTR33 airbox has so much potential is there is an extra inlet to the airbox through the side inner guard. Mine currently makes 320rwkw on the stock airbox and I'll soon push that over 400rwkw. It can't be done the same with a stock RB25 box, but I've seen a large improvement in simply removing the top out of the airbox on the auto 33 I had and sealing it to allow frontal airfeed only. Unfortunately the lower area of the airbox is not particularly good so on my race car (33 GTS25t with RB26/30) I custom made the new airbox to be where the stock cooler is with a stock panel filter in the front, bellmouth pickup inside and a vented front on the bumper will follow to allow direct air intake.

  13. Call revolution racegear in Moorooka, or maybe Meridian motorsport in Melbourne. Don't ATI do fuel cells as well? Hunt around but I just leave the baffles alone and make sure the oil returns are good. I've just pickud up some nice Millenium Jade covers and an M-spec Nur cover garnish for the GTR, and the Racecar will get the crystal red covers and another M-spec Nur garnish.

The Tomeis are pure art. Ronin09 has them. My manifolds are a copy of the Tomeis and got them for 200 + 100 for the machining. My dumps are a basic short gate and 2.5inch pipe to make for easier maintenance as long ones are a pain. The dumps were about 200 and well put together but just no attention to detail on the gate merges but nothing a half hour of the die grinder didn't fix.

  14. Looking good Deren.

Have you thought of getting stainless manifolds and dumps?

There are horror stories about poor quality stuff but I bought the dumps from Ebay and did a little work to get them as I wanted (some finishing with the die grinder to get the transitions smoothed nicely and dress some welds), and the manifolds I got from a forum member cheap as they needed to be skimmed flat. Almost 18 months making 320rwkw with no dramas at all. No cracks or leaks. Most problems are with one piece single manifolds warping but less chance with 2 piece for twins.

The big difference has been the extra power came easy. Same boost, 14psi, and an extra 70rwkw using highflows. The boost comes on much faster as well. Soon to retune to 18 or 20 psi to see how it will go.

  15. must be pretty lose then...almost as loose as josh's mum's c...:P

on a side note - theyre open diff fronts right? ur thoughts of 1.5way front 2way rear? (ATS carbon)

The fronts are open and the rears are set a little loose to allow for it being a road car. But at least they can be shimmed up, unlike the V-spec crap which is considered economically unrepairable when they crap out (like on most V-specs that do some serious track) so they then have to find a replacement and most go for a non V-spec because they are repairable and adjustable. So not sure how that's crap Josh :D

Shane, just reshim the rear and get a decent one way front. 1.5 is a bit much on the front.

  16. Here's a cutie I saw outside Wesley on Sat arvo. Windows were down and it was raining. Not a good combination for Italian leather.

    Awww who's your daddy????

    Nice spot Dave.

Maybe I'd take one of them over a nice Maser.

  17. Pffft. Drafters?? ;)

I was in a specialist trade that has a rep for such hard drinking that no-one blinked when we had a 3 day bender. I had a total of 6 hours without consuming alcohol, only because I needed a couple of naps :D

    Bring em on Noel.
